Hey guys, I've been lurking for a long time but finally decided to start a thread today. Anyways, I've been fortunate enough to receive acceptances to a few schools and narrowed it down to NYU and UDM. I had a great experience at both so I'm having a really hard time deciding between the two. If you guys had the choice, which one would you pick? Please factor out cost (for now).

To dental students already in school: could you list some pros and cons?

I want to make an informed decision as soon as possible so that those waiting will have a better shot at getting in!

I'm actually in the exact same dilemma. They are both great schools clinically, but from what I have seen and heard, I think the edge goes to UDM only because the students there treat so many patients (detroit). But detroit is kind of depressing so...yeah.

Hey I am in the same boat....in my opinion the facilities are pretty equal...I have heard that UDM has one of the best clinical experiences but NYU is also really good...so for me thats not a deciding point either... NYU has a bigger class by almost 200 people but i dont really care about that either...NYU is around 415K for four years...ouch..and UDM is around 335...so point for UDM but I thought Detroit was kinda crappy...the area around the school isnt that nice...the downtown area wasnt that nice...and I hear most students live in the suburbs and commute like 30 min to and from the school...that would suck...and for me I would have to fly home which is expensive...where as NYU is in the greatest city in the world...living in NYC would be a once in a lifetime experience I think and just a 3 hour cheap train ride home..so basically is 80k worth being in a better city? I think I will be happy anywhere...probably more happy in NYC though...hard decision..

my vote is nyu. not only is the school strong clinically, but you'll have various opportunities to network (nyu's alum base is HUGE), be involved with research if you want, and pursue a lot of extracurriculars (i.e. dental brigade missions and what not)..and not to mention it's in NYC. NYC>detroit, in my opinion.

HOWEVER,

if you're just going to d school to be a clinician and nothing more, i say UDM. the school's clinical aspect is very strong, and it's cheaper.

good luck to you!

I too am having difficulty deciding between these two schools and another one. I loved my experience at UDM but living in NYC is a once in a life time opportunity (for me). I've been able to speak to some of the fourth years at udm and they brought up some problems that concern me a bit. My family and friends are telling me to go to nyu but I dunno right now. Whichever school you choose you're gonna get a top notch education. 🙂

Denticles,
What are the problems about UDM? I'm also accepted there and I want to know everything about the school 🙂

+1. If you're taking out loans, it probably isn't 80k cheaper, probably 150k.

bump. I have an offer at NYU, but on the wait list for UDM.

UDM hands down. They have completely revamped the entire dental school curriculum process due to the increase in class size. The sciences curriculum has been accelerated, course load is 1.5x per semester as compared to previous years, courses that were taken in second semester have been added to the first semester. As a result the class of 2016 will be entering the clinic very early!

Both seem to be great schools, UDM has a clinical program that stands out it looks like, but NYU has great things said about its facility as well.
