Hey, does anyone know what kind of stuff is on the VitalBook? If there any current NYU students, your feedback would be great. I wonder if any note taking will be needed since all the notes will be on there. Also, will we have to buy any books or are they on it too?

From what I've heard and gathered, the Vitalbook contains notes and all required texbooks and reading materials. I agree though that it would be great to hear some more details from a current student.

I wonder if we'll be carrying our laptops to school everyday...

Also, I wonder if gettign a PDA is a good idea

Hey- I just finished my second year at NYU. Here is the low-down on vitalbook... Nobody uses it!! In the past 2 years, I have opened it about 10 times. It is ok for supplemental notes- to copy and paste and print figures from books- but that is about it. There are no lecturer notes, etc. It is primarily tons of textbooks. I personally purchased regular textbooks for particular courses- Gross Anatomy because I can't stand reading a book off a computer screen. That is my opinion!!!

in taht case, do you think we should get the computers they recommend..do they even check?

About class notes, is it like undergrad (ie. good ol' paper and pen).

If all the books are on there, why would you buy them..is it cuz you don't like reading them off the screen? Basically can you get away with just using vitalbook for the books or do you still need to buy some?

you have to install the vitalbook on your computer because some classes require you to bring it in- but most courses- you will never use it!

as far as class notes, it is paper and pen-- but if your class organizes a transcript service- that is awesome! Someone types out the lecturers presentation and that that is how we studied for exams.

NYUDDS,
A quick Q. Is it feasible for someone to print off large number of pages from Vitalbook and study from it? What I mean is, can we do something like that at the library? I agree it's hard to study from a screen but I was hoping to get around the problem by printing off stuff from Vitalbook at the library. It would suck if I had to pay $25-$35 a week on ink on top of everything else. 🙁

printing is free at the library

NYUDDS, you are a great resource, where were you all this time!

What about attire, how do people dress in freshman year? Do we ever wear scrubs in first year?

thanks

I used to be on here a lot- I have a clinic break and thought I would check in... Anyway, the first year, I wore scrubs or jeans every day. Second year, a little more strict in the labs - khakis. And clinic, shirt and tie.

wow, scrubs everyday...didn't know that.

Thanks for the info NYUDDS

If you have some time I have a few more questions I would like to ask you 😀 . I heard that some labs (or maybe clinics) are at night is that true? Do you live on Campus and if so what do you think of it? Last question 🙂 , with the curriculum the way it is do you guys have time for extracurricular activities or do students spend most of their time studying for exams?

Hey NYUDDS or anyone else attending NYUCD, how does the wireless connection work? Does it work in the Dental Library, 26th Street Apts, and the school itself? Just curious about it, cuz its nice not to lug around an ethernet cord everywhere. Thanks..

I heard that some labs (or maybe clinics) are at night is that true? - first year, all labs are during the day. 2nd year labs- some are at night. clinics- yes, there are night clinics.
Do you live on Campus and if so what do you think of it?
- I lived in 26th street my first year. I hated it- too dormy. You have to show ID when you come in and the rooms are not at all great. But, it is right across from school, so that is convenient. If I were a first year, I would find a nice apt on my own, or try for Stuyvescent (NYU housing). A little walk to school- but nicer apartments.

Last question , with the curriculum the way it is do you guys have time for extracurricular activities or do students spend most of their time studying for exams?
- the first year is (my opinion) much more laid back than 2nd year. I cannot study past 8pm but study early in the mornings. It is was you personally like. In the end, yes, there is time if you budget time accordingly.

Hi there NYUDDS,

Thanks for the info so far. Just a few questions while everyone is at it.

Where do we get the scrubs from??

Which computer would you recommend getting for school?? Dell?? IBM?? Which one seems to be the concensus for your class??

What is the daily schedule like in first year?? I mean actual class time?? It seems that most schools have an 8-5 day, is this normal at NYUCD??

As students, do we get any free pass to a workout facility, gym, basketball courts, etc where we can vent off some of that gross anatomy stress??

Thanks from your help!

Hey- no problem... I was in your shoes once and had lots of questions!

Where do we get the scrubs from??
- you can buy scrubs on your own- but during your orientation, they will probably sell the ASDA scrubs with the NYU logo on them. They are great and a good price.

Which computer would you recommend getting for school?? Dell?? IBM??
- any is fine, just as long as it is compatible with the Vitalbook.

It seems that most schools have an 8-5 day, is this normal at NYUCD?? - The schedule is pretty cool- you have class T, Th 8a-10a and then labs (the class is split in half- half have lab 10-1 half have it 2-5) M,W,F - classes pretty much all day.

As students, do we get any free pass to a workout facility, gym, basketball courts, etc where we can vent off some of that gross anatomy stress??
Yeah- there is a really nice gym for NYU students - it is free.

Thanks NYUDDS,

Anyone know how to set up an NYU email account?? Are they supposed to give u a PIN or do I make one up??

Vital Source is the company that produces Vitalbook, and I agree with your analysis (although I'd use different terms 🙂 ).

I'm ashamed that my school uses the Vital Source products--they are completely shoddy and not worth the rip-off price that is charged EACH YEAR to use them. Or, as in most cases, to not use them and merely have them installed on your computer.

I agree with you fully- VitalSource is a scam!!! I barely use the the thing!!

So let me get this straight

1. You HAVE TO pay for and install Vitalbook eventhough you'll only use it a few times each year.

2. It's better to buy books, which means you pay for Vitalbook AND TEXTBOOKS?? How much does that amount to??

3. Why dont they leave students the option of either having Vitalbook OR Textbooks??

It doesnt make sense.

Also, has everyone received their tuition bills??

Damn, I forgot to ask.

How much do the scrubs with the NYU Logo cost at orientation??

I tried on some scrubs today...got them while working in a hospital...i bet NYU ones are a rip-off....is there any rule taht says we have to have official NYU Scrubs...and what about colour? i have green and blue.

My sister wore all sorts of scrubs she got from hospitals while she was a student at NYUCD. Seems most of the time you will wear a white coat with the NYUCD patch on it over the scrubs anyway.

HTH!

Hey EHA DDS,
I thought I would bring to attention what NYUDDS said earlier:

"You can buy scrubs on your own- but during your orientation, they will probably sell the ASDA scrubs with the NYU logo on them. They are great and a good price."

I would hope that after paying tuition at NYU, they don't shaft us by making us buy expensive scrubs. Thanks NYUDDS for your helpful answers!

Once again, I must disagree. I know I might be the only one here but, vital source is awesome. I don't understand why people hate it so much. Dental texts are not used consistently in curricula. So they are primarily used as a RESOURCE. What better resorce is there than to have 50 books on one dvd that is fully searchable? Granted there are problems, but the tech. has improved by leaps and bounds from my first semester and can only improve. Would people rather have to buy and lug books around? Sure you could only buy a few that you like but I prefer to have every friggin book on the planet on my harddrive. BTW, for boards, I couldn't have enjoyed it more. Kaplan book = crap, there's no index, you have to flip through 50 pages before you finnaly realize what you're looking for isn't in the book. With vitalsource on the other hand, one or two searches and I find exactly what I'm looking for. Copy and paste to power point and I have a nice quick review for the hard-to-remember topics. As far as the "I hate reading on the screen" argument, get over it. "Computers are here to stay," (quote, col. sanders 2004). No one ever complains about reading emails or sdn all day. I'll admit at first it was a little different to get used to but I gave it a chance and now I wouldn't go back to traditional to save my life.
Note - I did buy Netters text. That is one book I'll agree that you need to have a hardcopy of.

Right you are, but that doesn't mean there aren't problems.

For example, why not let ME choose the books I want and not have to pay for the ones I don't want? Right now our bookshelf has 110 books and I only want 30 of them. Why must I pay for our OB/GYN book, our Psych book, our 7 different anatomy texts, etc.?

The technology is a good one (for the most part), but the way it is implemented is horrid. I don't want most of the books, yet I have NO say it whether or not I have to pay for them each and every year.

That's a good point. I just don't like people's blanket statements about how it sucks. It would be nice to be able to pick which books you get but I doubt they will ever let that happen. It is pricey but I just chalk it up to one more thing you have to put up with in dental school, we all know it's a long list. 🙂

I just got a kick ass laptop today. Does anyone know how much we'll have to bring it to school?
