NYU Students:Where Are you Living?

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
Is there anyone that plans on commuting to NYU or knows someone already in school that does? I live about an hour away from school by train, living in the city is very expensive and being an in state student if I could save on room and board without the commute and school work killing me i'd figure i'd give it a shot.

My worry has come true. I got assigned to Washington Square Village.... which is 20 blocks away from the dental building. That defeats the purpose of living in student dorms.

I got screwed by NYU housing. I'm paying a lot to still live far from class and I won't live with all the D1 students. 😡

Is anyone in my situation as well? If you live in Washington Square Village too, I would like to meet you (PM me). Just so we can have some D1 group of our own in the residence hall! 🙂

Wow...that's even past astor place. Looks like you'll be taking the subway to school. I'm living sort of mid-way b/w u and school (12th and 1st ave). I'm down for having a study group south of 14th street =)

Don't worry, WSV is much much cheaper than the other residence halls NYU has assigned other dental students. You'll not be the only D1 at WSV as well. Plus I've heard that there is a shuttle bus from the residence to the dental building. If you haven't already, join the NYU facebook group to meet students in the same situation as you.

I just signed a lease for a two bedroom in Forest Hills, Queens for $1200/month. Probably about 850-900 sq. ft. It is a great deal for the area. It puts us in the school district for PS 199 which is supposedly the #2 public school in the NY area. The school is about four blocks away. We are right by the "gardens" on metropolitan avenue, for those familiar with the area. There are two units above a peruvian restaurant. The other is still available if anyone out there has young kids. The public school has a pre K program which accepts some kids as young as three so you can save huge on day cares costs (although it isn't an all day program). It is a 10min walk to Austin Street (hip area with National Brand stores) where the 71st subway is. You can take the E or F express into Manhattan. Including bus time from my place to the station (can walk if you want but it is free with the Metro Pass) I figure about 50 minutes to the dental school.

Good option for families with small kids. Very clean, safe and fun area. The apartments are "fixer uppers" but if you don't know anyone in Forest Hills it is very competitive to get an apartment as a student. An old couple owns this building and they don't mind students, just pay the rent. PM if you are interested and I can give you the contact information. The original price was $1300 a month but we got them down to $1200, don't know if you can do the same.

If I were you guys wouldnt move there I lived there for 1 year I am from BRASIL when my sister came or any guest comes from out of town they are only allwed to stay there for 5 days! It sucks she came for 3 weeks I have to end up putting her in a hotel! Not worth the $! You cant even receive anyone as guest! That doorman is a HITLER! Checking the stupid IDS all the time! Like someone wants to go inside of that crap! Laundry is also a joke you have to wait about 3 hours the machines are alsways broken!

I sent an email to the Housing office to request a room change. They reassigned me to the 26th street a couple days before the orientation~
That was fortunate 😀
