Hello SDN,

I'm an international student (accepted to 4-year DDS/DMD programs not Advanced Standing) who's having a lot of trouble deciding between NYU, Buffalo, and BU. In my situation, the total expenses at Buffalo is estimated to about 100k cheaper than NYU and 50k cheaper than BU. Cost is extremely important, but location, school reputation, and residency placements are also important factors. I know NYU has the best facilities but I'm not sure if the extra 100k is worth the value.

For those who are attending BU, NYU, or Buffalo and had similar situation when deciding where to attend, could you please shed some light as to how you made your decision? Any information would be greatly appreciated.

100K cheaper? You would be out of your mind to choose any of the other schools if one is that much cheaper and awards the EXACT same degree. The facilities at Buffalo are fine. High tech facilities does not produce a better dentist. Residency placement is totally up to the efforts of the individual student. None of those 3 schools will give you a greater advantage when it comes to residency. However, Buffalo has a much, much smaller international dental student population than the other 2 so maybe that is important to you. Also if Buffalo is still a 3 year international program, you will be put into the second year class which is the most difficult and time consuming year out of 2nd, 3rd, and 4th years. I don't recall if the other schools were 2 or 3 year programs but that may be a factor to consider, especially if you want to practice in NY and have to do a GPR/residency anyways.

Hello. Thank you for your feedback.
I was accepted to 4-year DDS/DMD programs not Advanced Standing programs.

You could save even more money. Take a year off. Move to Alabama. Apply to dental school as a resident. ROLL TIDE!!!!

In that case, you would be insane to pay an extra $100K. Go to Buffalo. IMO, it's the better school anyways.

Thanks again, Dr. Gryffindor.

Can anyone from BU or NYU share what their experience has been like?

With cost being the biggest factor, you should go to Buffalo.

No one person can compare the schools to each other.. dental school is what you make of it. It can suck if you want it to suck, or it can be moderatly enjoyable. In the end provided you make it through your a Dr. If the cost is that much different, and as you have stated is very important to you then i think your choice is pretty clear cut. The only other thing I can see being important is the amount of international students as someone else suggested above.

The answer is always the same...go to the cheapest school!!! $100k plus interest is a lot of money that will be stuck with you for a long time.

I know NYU has the best facilities but I'm not sure if the extra 100k is worth the value.

It is well over $100k. Time and time again pre-dents forget that these loans are not free and come at very heft interest rates.
