i was wondering what people's opinions are about these two schools and why they would pick one over the other. after visiting/interviewing they seem to me to both be great schools but with different focuses. i liked how GW emphasizes clinical skills training, and has tons of resources for the students to take advantage of organizations such as the WHO/World Bank in DC. Seems like an ideal place for someone looking to become involved with policy at some level, which I am. NYU has a great teaching hospital, Bellevue is amazing, good program, etc.

anyone have thoughts??

thanks.

Having no first hand experience with either, research and reputation definitely favor NYU strongly.

I agree. Also depends on what you want citywise. Also, NYU's ranked in US News at ~ 30, while GW's ~ 60 (I think). Depends on if you go by such things...great schools! Congrats!

thanks guys. i guess in comparing these schools, im wondering how much to pay attention to the US News Rankings. Ive heard that GW ranks relatively low because they dont pull in a ton of research funding...however it seems like many of the students/faculty are involved with research, just they become involved through the different centers scattered around dc. with the new hospital and skills lab, and just being in DC, GW seems like a great place. but it also seems like NYU students have a bit of an advantage with residency placements.

Without any doubt, choose NYU!!!
I'm giving you this recommendation totally out of a selfish desire to attend GW. They are my first choice, and I didn't apply to NYU. To hell with the rankings...I just want to be a physician! 😀

as a nyu graduate i am biased. but I can tell you the match list from NYU my year was by far more impressive than any other NYC school that year. student life at nyu is very impressive with tons of clubs and student activities. Plus you are living in nyc, how can you beat that.

dont pay attention to curriculum, regardless of what you hear, all schools teach the same crap which will be on step I.

true, it is hard to beat living in NYC...

does anyone know what kind of class schedule NYU has? do their classes run all day every day or half day, or what? i couldnt find this info in their packet, and forget what they told us on the tour.

thanks!

NYU also has some pretty poor housing (old, old co-ed closet size dorms), that might be a factor if you are thinking about quality of life

Considering that lots of people match for residency at their "home institution", NYU, probably across the board has more highly regarded programs. I'd choose on location though-where do you want to live? either way there's a shuttle bus that'll take you between the two cities for 25 bones round trip.

Are you saying that you found the NYU matchlist more impressive than either Cornell or Columbia's ?

My year, nyu had an incredible match. but year to year it varies. All nyc schools will get you set up for your specialty of choice and give you a great chance of getting your number ones. this is because all the nyc schools are strong in nearly every field and there is top notch research going on at each institution. when you get a letter from a very well known respected individual in the field, it means a ton- you will have every opportunity to interact with these folks and participate in exciting research projects at an nyu, cornell, or a columbia

nyu is a much better school than GW. if the idea of working on public policy interests you, there are probably more options in dc, but nyc also offers plenty of work in the nonprofit sector.
