Hey guys; I am debating on choosing NYU or Loma Linda for dental school. Which school will be a better decision- which school is better curriculum, and better opportunity for specializing. By the way - i am not seventh day adventist and live 1 hour away from Loma Linda.

your input will be appreciated
Thank you

I'll forward this post by putting it out there that I'm on the waiting list for LLU, but I was in a similar situation earlier when deciding between schools.

I definitely good to think long and hard about your choice of dental school, and to really focus on what you want personally, and in the end go with your gut.

I've heard that NYU has decent specialty chances, but I know that both NYU and LLU have numerous specialty programs of their own, giving you a bit of a foot inside the door. In talking with many dentists in the so-cal area, LLU is known for prouducing extremely competent General Dentists. Not too sure about curriculum differences though.

Another thing to take into account is if you want to move or not. Personally I'm not a fan of the big city for a few reasons, and that somewhat contributed to my turning down Columbia, but I've talked to many people who have said that living in the city was one of the best experiences they've had, and they wouldn't give those years up for anything. If you have relationships locally though, it would be understandable that moving that distance wouldn't be great. I know that's definetly a big factor for me.

Well, I hope that helped, and that I seemed balanced 🙂

Good luck, I'm sure that whatever decision you come to you'll be happy.

if i were you, i would go to LLU solely because of location (im from LA area) although I have no clue about their program. However, NYU has a very nice and practical curriculum so if you have $$$ and you enjoy being in NY, you should def consider NYU.

please anyone from NYU and Loma Linda -I will appreciate it

The only thing I know about NYU is I believe they have a very large class size, 400-500? Somebody help me out here. I met some instructors from there at the last ADEA annual session and was impressed with them and their program.
Loma Linda has an excellent program also, lots of practical clinic time. Our specialty programs are also very strong with in-house prosthodontic, ortho, endo, perio, pedo, oral surgery and implant programs. ( as you probably know implant dentistry is not officially recognized by the ADA as a specialty). All specialty programs did well in their specific accreditations along with the schools general accreditation by CODA earlier this year.

NYU does have a large class. It's 230 first year, and about 100 APs join you 2nd year so you're closer to 330 for the latter 3 years. You'll only realize how large the class is on test days though. Every lecture is video recorded so a good number of students will choose to watch the lectures on their computers on their own time. The attendance early in the year was around 150 before the video lectures came out and around 30 after they came out. The labs are split up into different sections and you'll have about 110 people in your lab section. The only time EVERYONE shows up together is on test day.

Clinically, NYU is very comprehensive. You get to do everything, including implants and veneers. NYU has the largest aesthetic program of any dental school and every student is guaranteed a chance to place implants and veneers. They also have the largest patient pool in the country--You won't have to go out and solicit patients. Lastly, you'll see patients at NYU that you won't see at LLU... If you want to see all the special cases that most other students only read about, there is no place that gives you a better chance to do so than New York City.

Loma linda = much cheaper and in san diego. And the same prestige I assume.

How is LLU with out of staters? NYU obviously take s a good amount from OOS but is LLU only for Cali kids?

If you look at all the programs combined ( including the post-doctoral programs) almost half of the student body is OOS. BTW LL is about and hour to the closest beach and about 1.5 to 2 hrs to San Diego.🙂
