Minnesota is more expensive tuition

What are the pros and cons for each school for you? Why the hesitation if NYU is less expensive?

If youre OOS tuition for both is about the same, but the cost of living is notably more in NYC. If youre in-state for minnesota tuition is much cheaper. Minnesota campus and surroundings are beautiful, NYU doesnt have much of a campus and the surroundings have some ups and many more downs. Education-wise, Minnesota should be better since much smaller class size than NYU. Stress-wise, NYC is stressful and will wear you down. The only downside to Minnesota is it is the 4th coldest state in the country, but its not a prob if you learn to dress appropriately. Winner: Minnesota

Wow, thanks for all the input guys.
I would say the sum of tuition cost and living cost would be similar for both schools.
Minnesota's overall 4-year-tuition cost $40,000 more than NYU overall 4-year-tuition cost, but obviously NYU living cost would be higher than Minnesota. So, at the end, the money will most likely even out without much difference.
I was leaning towards NYU more because I am actually Canadian applicant and NYU is more recognized internationally than Minnesota. At the same time, yes, I am unsure about how much support I can get from the large class size of NYU as opposed to Minnesota's ideal class size for a dental class.

Anyone hands down for NYU?

A lot of people will tell you to go to Minnesota because it's cheaper and the surroundings may be nice, and alright, you do have those two pros. But take a step back and look at it from your personal point-of-view: you're from Canada, NYC can be a very exciting experience for you, and going to NYU will help in job applications, I mean, how can it possibly hurt--this was told to me by an orthodontist that went to Columbia in Jersey last year, he mentioned that renown school's do play a factor in salary and employment... granted it's just one person's opinion but I do feel that going to a prestigious institution can never hurt you. The other thing, honestly, NYC is an amazing place to be, it will toughen you up, man. It's inevitably upto you, but I am wholeheartedly excited about NYUCD, the debt will come and go, eventually, but the memories and experiences will always stay. In the words of Frank Sinatra, "If I can make it there, I'm gonna make it anywhere, it's up to you, New York, New York"

I think you are underestimating the cost of living difference unless NYU has a deal on housing for dental students. Rent alone will be more than a $40K difference over the 4 years. You can realistically find an apartment for $800-1000 (or much less with a roommate) in MN, in a safe area, nice area, close to public transportation so no need for a car. Just going out after class for a beer will cost half of what it does in NYC. I guess I would take a suggestion from someone that is from the east coast with a grain of salt over which school has a better reputation. Those that need to know, future employers, all went through the same thing you are going through and know that each dental school has it's pluses and minuses and it matters more what you do in school vs what name is on your sweatshirt.

Now, NYC is obviously much bigger than Minneapolis/St. Paul but the two areas are similar in many ways--culture, theater, etc. Minneapolis has a huge theater scene, most theater seats per capita outside of NY. I don't really think you could go wrong at either school, just giving a bit more information.

Hi guys,

torn between choosing NYU and Minnesota.

Where would you go and why?

I'm currently torn between these two. Which did you end up choosing? Are you happy with your decision?
