I'm very grateful to have two great options with the same cost of attendance so that is not a factor for me. Any advice is much appreciated!
NYU:
Pros:
+ top neurology and ortho programs (two fields I'm interested in), neuropsychiatry residency program (1 of 5 programs in the US) (I’m not decided on a specialty but definitely considering these)
+ shadowing app (makes it easy to explore other fields)
+ top clinical facilities with diverse pt pop and rotation through public and private systems
Cons
- Curriculum is compressed and faster pace (more difficult, less time for exploration, limited to clinically relevant material)
- Higher cost of living, live in small dorm
Unsure:
3 year curriculum with 1 year preclinical (faster paced which makes me really nervous, but also opens the door to more opportunities)
STEP Prep: curriculum more tailored to STEP material, but dedicated isn’t until after the 2nd year (most people take Step 2 and then Step 1 or take Step 1 early after 1st year without dedicated)
Pritzker
Pros:
+ curriculum takes more of a whole-person, holistic approach to medicine, more academic/professional support
+ more comfortable living
I’m from Chicago (my family and girlfriend are here) so I would have family support
Lower cost of living and nicer apartment
+ I want to match back to Chicago
+ school is known for very strong mentorship and student-faculty relationships
Cons:
- weaker neurology and ortho programs, no neuropsychiatry residency at all
- no formal shadowing
- clinical facilities are older and pt pop limited, smaller hospital system that is not as highly ranked
Unsure:
4 year curriculum with 1.5 year preclinical (slower paced with broader focus)
