NYU vs TEMPLE

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
I never been to the NYU campus, but Temple isn't in the best part of town. When I interviewed there I was told that pretty much no one stays on campus after 5 because of the area. I would imagine your 3 year program would require a lot of lab work which would make you want that kind of time flexibility.

Wish I could offer more than hearsay.

Be one with the locals .

😉

hey did they start accepting people already at nyu? I am waiting for an interview .
Anyway this topic has been discussed many times before all over the international and regular forums and nyu has been the preferred choice each time since the cost is the same but life and clinical exposure is much better at nyu than at temple. Dont even think of comparing jersey city with the area around temple and you will be spending most of your day in nyc either way..unlike temple ..where the locality is completely unsafe and depressing also you will make mopre contacts and friends at nyu

Hello Folks..

I am an International Dentist accepted to both NYU and TEMPLE. Both schools offer 3 years of course and almost the same tuition for Internationals. I need a serious opinion from you guys as to what school would you choose and why? From what I have searched in this forum I am sure that both have good clinical exposure, but what is it that makes you select one school over the other? And to the down side of Temple is the location but same is the case with NYU, since If you want to rent an affordable apartment while studying at NYU, you might end-up living in Jersey City and commute to the school would be 45mins-1 hour one way.!!! Not to forget the 1 mile walk one way.
So both are kind of same in that case. Its pretty confusing for me to decide between the two, I dont know which school is superior in other aspects so Please Help.🙂

I have heard really good things about Temple's clinical training. My director graduated from there in the early '90's. As far as the area....it's not the best. He said it was not uncommon to hear gun shots at night, seeing casings all over the sidewalks in the morning. He had a shot gun pulled on him by an mentally ill person on the street, and in the Spring of his last semester, he and his classmates saw 4 men in ski masks shoot and murder a guy in front of a pawn shop (across the street). But every city has a bad areas and as long as you're cautious you'll be okay. My gf went to med school in Philly and she managed. 🙂

ive never had a problem in regards to safety. Broad street has (street the med, pharm, and dental school is on) great lighting and security. It is obviously not the best area, but its ok as long as you are not wondering off in the area at 2am. Most students live in either center city or manayunk/roxborough. Living costs can range from $500-$1200 depending on where you live, how many roommates you have, etc. If you expect to live alone, you can expect to spend about $800-$1000/month including everything. You will also be within 10-15min from the school.(from center city and manayunk).

In regards to the international student, I believe there are roughly about 12 in our class. I think they are enjoying temple. I am friends with a few and they integrate really well with our class. I am a 2nd year, and they are basically taking all the classes we are taking now.

Hey, NYU started inviting internationals from the first week this month. Hope for the best. Last year there were interviews till march 10th so don't loose hope. I have talked to my friends at NYU, regarding clinical exposure both are almost same also Temple has higher clinical requirements than NYU. I live in Jersey City and I know how life here is. Just wanted to know If I choose Temple is it going to be better than NYU. Students at Temple had no issues with the area because the subway station is in the same block and parking garage are few blocks from school. Again I have a lot of information about NYU, all i can say that if you plan to stay in JC and commute it would be a headache.!!

depends person to person i guess..i have lots of friends who are very happy at nyu since they love the new technology , clinical exposure there and since they have made so many friends in the huge batch.. . Also most people i spoke to at temple were later selected from the waiting list and did not have other choices since most people last year declined temple for nyu colorado etc . U can see the same discussion in last years temple (or 2010-11) thread where appu09 etc got into both nyu and temple...and slected nyu ..he/she has given all reasons there. Anyway hope i get your nyu slot 😛...i will decline temple then...cause i am desperate for nyu. All the best.👍
also trust me ...i have lived at both the places.... broad street is not something you would want to leave jc or nyc for 3 years...and paying the same amount...

Great, Congrats with your acceptance at Temple, may I know were your IV batch? Wish you Good Luck for NYU. Yes you are correct it depends on person to person.
In case of Temple, IMHO most of the Internationals go by herd mentality and thus end-up leaving it, obviously no body wants to take risk when lot of people are taking of the bad location. I cant understand that why would the location be a problem when public transportation is right at the corner of the block and lots of car parking garages nearby??? I would rather choose to live in a good area and be cautious while walking down the street which is again just few blocks to school also in working hours than having to live in JC and walk from Journal Square path station to the apartment in off-working hours. Not to mention the agony of walking 1.5 miles one way daily to reach school. I respect personal opinions of others but I shall go by some good facts only. For me I think Temple is a better choice and for no reason I travelled across the globe leaving my lovely parents back in my home country just to live in area like JC!!! Ofcourse I lived here for 5 months but its about time now:laugh:.
While you work as a Dentist your office staff would be @ 10, so i better get use to making friends with less people..🙂
Ultimately In my case it makes no sense now to leave Temple and choose NYU.👍

great...all the best...here is the link to the temple group on fb
