I was accepted to NYU and I am starting to think I may not attend. Not because I am a "racist" it is just that I would like to be around people that not only think like me but look like me and have the same culture as I do. With all due respect come on "New York University" it is not India University! I went back for a visit to see how I would like NYU and the culture there...I went to an interview and I was aware that most of the other interviewed students were Indian and even a couple of Asian students...I was the only "White American Student" there. I just thought it was a fluke....This weekend I popped in for a better look at the school and found most everyone at NYUCD is from another country!!! I know it sounds like a race thing but it is not....it is the simple fact that I would like to have friends that I can have similar interest with and have the same background with. I have had experience with other cultures and I have spent many vacations overseas in Europe but this is crazy...🙁

I understand your desire to be with people similar to you, but please do learn about different cultures first BEFORE stepping foot into New York City. Firstly, Indians are not (arabs) -- they are two ENTIRELY different people. Secondly, NYU lets international students in around your second year so that should explain the number of different cultures you're seeing. Foreign people tend to hang together so you might've just been caught in their crowd. I'm Pakistani (American raised), and personally I don't mind being around whites, blacks, asians, etc. I think the more variety for me -- the better my learning experience. After all, dental school is a learning experience. When you graduate and start working, then you can move to your little gated community outside the city.

Your comments are on the racist side. If you are unhappy about the demographics of NYU, do not attend, move on, and keep those comments to yourself. NYU will not miss you nor will they change their admission policies in order to suit your racial needs.

nyc is the most internationally diverse city in america. this is true for all of its universities as well. so if u want a homogenous student body, stick to middle america with the "good ol' boys"

I understand what you are talking about. American culture is very different from Asian and Middle Eastern cultures and I don't blame you wanting to be with people of your own kind. I am a foreigner myself and I do have a hard time hanging out with my american friends so I totally understand what you are saying. Don't worry about it though because NYU is a diverse school but I am sure they still have a large population of white Americans. Regardless of all these NYU is a very very expensive school and I don't think it's worth the money in any way. I wish you all the best of luck!

hahaha. hey, as an Indian, an undergrad at NYU and someone who is lucky to have experienced "american" culture and an eclectic mix of it all, you have a lot more to worry about than "Indian University." i take it youre not very accepting or understanding of other cultures. Cultures also include homosexuality(NYU is the number one "gay-accepting" school), etc. these are considersations u should make before entering any dental school for not just you but for everyone's sake.

listen, dont come to nyu dental. I wont be going there myself, but i know plenty of people who do, and will, and most of them are "white-americans", but heres the catch, theyre not bastards.

take it easy, and **** yourself.

so do you disagree with minorities that form their own group, or only hang out with each other; or are you one that believes only white people are racist

a little bit of everything, actually. i find nothing wrong with people with cultural similarities hanging together irrespective of being brown/indian/white/american/gay, etc...because lets face it, culture is simply a function of common principles.
So, in my case, not only am i indian, but i am also american. the problem lies in the heading oceans1 has used. So despite requests to not take his/her comments as racism, or bigotry, the fact that he/she lumps arabs and indians together as one unit shows otherwise. Its ironic, because oceans1 does the same by using "white american".
The anthropological debate aside, the insincerity with which oceans1 wrote is unfair and incomplete to those of us who come to studentdoctor for rational, level-headed debate/commentary/recommendations and i feel it needed to be addressed.

take care .

If you don't like mixing with other cultures/people don't do something which is a public service to society, as a dentist and healthcare professional it is your responsibility to not only respect people regardless or race, sexual preference, and economic status, but to also be willing to treat everyone equally. I don't see how you were overwhelmed with "indian" people being everywhere........your post comes across as disrespectful even if you don't mean it, people there have earned their position so live with it or go elsewhere. I'm sure they would be more than happy welcome you as a friend if you have the right attitude, if not, they are better off not to.

While his comments were about races, they were not in any way racist. Racism implies the promotion of one race over another, which he/she clearly didn't do. His/her comment wasn't even prejudice, which would imply that he/she was pre-judging other races. He/she simply stated a desire to be around some people from the same race, which is quite natural. While ignorant, yes, but clearly not racist. And yes, your mouth does smell.:scared:

Sure your definition of racism is valid, but you seem to forget the other definitions of racism which includes (Wikipedia owns you):

1. preference for one's own ethnic group.
2. fear of foreigners.
3. views or preferences against mixing of the races.
4. and/or a generalization of a specific group of people (stereotyping).

It is quite evident that the OP has highlighted at least 2 of the points listed and if you think the OP wasn't being prejudice, just look at the title of her thread.

And yes, your mouth does smell.:scared:

Bravo!

Hey loser. I'm from "middle america", and i realize we may not be as enlightened, sophisticated, and self richeous as some of you idiots from the coasts but quit generalizing anyone from the midwest as being racist. The middle of the country happens to be a pretty good place to live. And if some of you pretentious losers would ever visit you might find out were pretty good people to live with.

OMFS, I agree with you on this one. And I must emphasize that OCEANS did not start this thread as a racist rant. But leave it to some hypersensitive Guju to MAKE it into a racist rant.

Come on people! There is nothing wrong with questioning whether a school with lots of foreigners is the right place to attend. Its equally fine to reject an acceptance to a school with lots of foreigners - even if that is the ONLY reason you reject it. This doesn't make the person racist. It only means the person is exercising his/her Constitutional Right to have a d*mn opinion about where they will enjoy going to school. (Yeah, I checked and that really is a Constitutional Right).

I recently interviewed at a school with a butt load of foreigners. Guess what, they don't know CRAP about football. They also don't understand Blues or Rock and Roll. They don't share my sense of humour, at all. And I decided it wouldn't be much fun to go to school there. So what did I do? I went to another school with a bunch of football lovin', American music listenin', sense of humour havin' Americans (of various ethnicities).

Does that make me racist? Guju might think so. But he's an *ss. And he doesn't realize I am married to a FOB Indian and I spend more time in India than he does. I've been there 4 times in the past 5 years. Even though I'm white. So there you have it.

I assume that all those indians and arabs at NYU (two different peoples, by the way) are just pursuing a dental education, just like you would be doing and I'm sure they are talented. Dental schools have high standards so with few exceptions everybody that gets in is pretty good.

Nevertheless, IF what you're implying is true, that NYU administration has some overblown diversity thing going then I'd head elsewhere. You don't want any agendas if you have the choice.

Congrats on your acceptance.

yes you seem to be quite the archetype. (sarcasm). How do you know how much time I or any other person spends abroad? you dont, so if anything youre the ass, clown. Sure, im an ass, before i continue i have to say this thread is getting way too much attention. Anyway, i applaud your openess in finding a spouse who is outside of your frame of reference. But you have ot udnerstand that working outside of our frames of reference (2nd generation immigrants, etc) and assimilating is a daily process which I am open to and welcome. Let me reiterate, i applaud your willingness and understand that one must consider all options, as I did before I applied to schools, especially in Texas and other states where I did not see myself being happy (yes i have visited and then placed a judgment). BUT, that is not what oceans1 stated. The thread started with Oceans1 lumping a phenotypic trait (brown skin) as one...and while this may seem like an overzealous attack, it is not. The headline is hurtful and unprofessional. If you dont want to go to a school because you dont see yourself assimilating with whatever the dynamic is, Hey, im fine with that, but before placing it on SDN, do some research, understand why there might me a lot of asians and south asians at the institution, and understand that not only will you find different cultures at NYUCD, but in new york city as well. If that burns your bisquit, no ones asking you to eat it.

"loser," thats classy... but first off, i have many friends from the midwest and i have been there several times to visit them. more importantly, i never said that people from middle america were racists, i was commenting that it is less international than nyc... and if you call that generalizing, go ahead but there is no way you can say it is incorrect

speaking of middle america.....who would've figured it's in south dakota...(thanks to alaska and hawaii)...anyway, makes for a good conversation starter at your next party.

This is post has become officially out of hand and we all need to calm down. The question that the original poster is asking...I think...is...are there people like him there and I can assure you that there is so don't worry about it. There are a lot from Pakistan and India, but don't worry they're friendly.

The rest of you people need to stop with the antics.

I would like to have friends that I can have similar interest with and have the same background with.

I know this may come shocking to you, but did ever occur to you that NYUCD has an Advanced Placement DDS program for internationally trained dentists? Yeah, each year, internationally-trained dentists from all over the United States and more than 50 countries enroll at NYUCD.

Good luck finding people with "similar background!"

I was accepted to NYU and I am starting to think I may not attend.

Oceans, you are fine to make your choice of school based on all the information you have available. If you don't want to work on the clinic floor with 100 foreigners, than more power to you. Go to a different school with a smaller contingent of 'Advanced standing' foreign dental grads. You will miss out on the cross cultural experience that might be available with that many foreigners around, but maybe that's not something you are interested in anyway. It doesn't make you less of a person.

On another note, you don't see me (or most other white people) flippin' out on Indian, or Hispanic immigrants because they tend to spend lots of their free time with similiar immigrants. I'm not going to go into the Indian SDN forum and call them a bunch of racists for not posting in the other SDN forums. Likewise, if you tend to spend time with people from a similar background to your own, I can't blame you or judge you or paint you with the "racist brush".

And as for Guju's self righteous critique of your post: Don't let that *ss spoil your opinion of Indians. Most Indians are very nice and capable of rational exchange of Ideas.

Some of the Best Places in the Country on not on the East/West Coast. And the people are definitely down to earth and friendly, especially in the Midwest.

Its funny because when I go to India and people find out I'm from the US the conversation goes pretty much like this:

Me: Yeah, I'm from the US.

Indian Dude: Oh, yeah. New York?

Me: No, I'm actu -

Indian Dude: Oh, California is it?

Me: No, It's actually a place cal -

Indian Dude's Friend: You're from Chicago?!?

Me: No, I'm from the south actually.

Indian Dude: (With very Confused and Dubious Expression) Oh, I've never heard of it.

Anyway, I've had this conversation a million times so I think I'm just going to start saying I'm from New York when I visit India. It would really simplify my life.

rational exchange of ideas goes out the window when you deal with ignorance.

Not because I am a "racist" it is just that I would like to be around people that not only think like me but look like me and have the same culture as I do.

You assume that because someone doesn't look like you that they don't have the same culture as you do.

I was the only "White American Student" there.

But I will bet that you weren't the only American student there.

I just thought it was a fluke....This weekend I popped in for a better look at the school and found most everyone at NYUCD is from another country!!! I know it sounds like a race thing but it is not....it is the simple fact that I would like to have friends that I can have similar interest with and have the same background with.

Again, you assume that the color of their skin determines where they are from and what culture they have.

If you're in a band, I'll bet you're the bassist.

rational exchange of ideas goes out the window when you deal with ignorance.

Not really.

Ignorance only means "lack of knowledge". Only a completely arrogant fool would claim to not be ignorant. Guju, do you think you know everything in the world? I doubt it. Oceans may not know everything in the world, either. This would make both of you ignorant. However, Oceans is respectful when he posts his thoughts on SDN, while you are belligerent and bellicose.

Thanks for showing up, though.

lack of knowledge....equating arab and indian to be the same thing shows this, yes?

im here buddy, and as arrogant as i may seem, i will not define another person simply by a few traits, as i have tried with you. I respect that you have shown interest in things outside of your frame of reference, etc. but this isnt about you and it certainly is getting old with your choice words for me. This is about oceans1.

Read the first and only post by oceans1...it states people who LOOK LIKE oceans1...and then as it has been mentioned multiple times...Indian(Arab)....

culture has nothing to do with the way a person looks. I, in fact, enjoy football...im actually rooting for colts and new orleans now that the giants have been eliminated, and was shocked by osu losing; i love rock and hey i even love jazz. But you know what, i also enjoy elements of indian culture. Oceans1 is the person I have problems with as many in this thread do. You can think whatever you want of me, and it personally wont affect me. BUT, I will respond to you, and dont you for a second think I am going to back down.

But lets face it, you, Jaybe, and I will both revel in our opinions. But for now, I remain that first thread was very offensive and very unprofessional. Ass-hole aside, I believe a great number of people on this thread agree with me.

I await your reply and look forward to future bickering, or wait, lets jsut say we end this here. I'll let go of someone making a quick quip about responding to one of my posts with "easy there chief, wait..wrong kind of indian", and even put aside your assumptions of how many times I have traveled abroad, and will even respect you by not calling you an ass. If you refuse this offer, then I'm here.

ps. wheres oceans1?

the fact of the matter is indians are the s***t. the higher in education you reach, the more indians you are going to see. we (i mean they😉 ) also have a very large population so if you go ANYWHERE there will be indians.

GO INDIA!!!

I kind of agree with this ocean guy. you don't want to live in a place where demographics are skewed one way or another. For you all of those stupid losers out there who pull the race card all the time no matter what, racism doesn't apply to a person who wants to live within his own community. It's like saying that christians are racist because they keep together in their church and they never participate in a mosque. As much as I like NYU I do see this as a negative thing about its admission. Look, the same way people say that a school must not be entirely white, this ocean guy is saying that he wants to go to a school that is not entirely or prominently indian. Man, I should've become a lawyer.
