Nyu

Good for you. That's where I think I am going. You should have made an official NYU thread!

I think I will be there next fall. Even if a few other acceptances come in, I am really starting to get excited about NYU. Here is an e-mail that a current student wrote that has some general information for people trying to make a decision:

Okay, Pros & Cons. Pros: In no ranking order...

1) Exam schedule is pretty fairly spread out. At other dental schools, you will have "midterm" weeks where your exams are all taken care of during that week. At NYU, we don't have things such as "midterm" weeks. We just have exams scheduled at various times during the semester. I find this nice because you can really plan out how you want to attack the material. So on average, you have roughly 4-5 days in between exams with the exception of a few exams where you'll have 1-2 days. For instance, this past three weeks we had like 4 exams or so. Each were spread apart for roughly 4 days. We just got done with Anatomy final yesterday and we'll be doing our General Dentistry course final this Tuesday, followed by our Cell Bio final this Thursday. This past three weeks has been really really tough, but doable. I sure can't imagine doing all these courses in one or two weeks like some others schools are doing!

2) Diversity. I love the diversity of students here. You won't everexperience anything like it ever. Our class has a very good mix of all nationalities from Indian, Russian, Korean, Chinese, etc.

3) Plastinations. We don't have to waste time disecting in anatomy labs! Everything is already all disected perfectly and preserved. No smelling like formaldehyde.

4) Top of the line clinics. Our school is top of the line as far as dental technology is concerned and as far as dental health promotion. All our clinics had just been renovated with the exception of one. We see something like over 250,000 patients per year, so you should nothave any problem getting patients. All students will be invisalign certified by the time they graduate (orthodontic technique).

5) Transcript service. All our lectures are recorded and transcribed word for word. This is my life saver! Without this, I'd be lost! I don't know if other dental schools do this...but we do.

6) The school's willingness to help students. I don't know what you heard about NYUCD. But, when I came here there were rumors about how NYUCD will kick out a bunch of people and this and that. This is absolutely false. However, it might have been true in the past, but it definitely is not these days. They do everything they can to help students pass their classes as far as resources go. Tutoring, review sessions, mentors, etc.

Cons: I really have no complaints so far...maybe I will later, but everything is going good so far.

1) Price tag. Both tution and living in the city will cost you.

2) Large class. You don't get the personal attention you might at other schools. I do not know any of my professors at all and they don't know me. Essentially, I'm just a number. But, for me, I'm fine with that.

3) Dr. XXX's Dental Patient Relationship class. This guy's class is ridiculous. Its a psychology based course and you never know what the right answer is on his quizzes and exams. If you come here, you'll see.

man, id go to nyu..only if theyd take me😡
still no word

As NYU alum myself, I completely miss having lived at NYU. It by far the most exciting, fun part of life. The heart of NYC is just too much to disregard. The prospect of attending NYU is just something I look forward to.

Wow that thread really helped a lot. Some of the information on it was already presented during interview, but still, it's an awesome post. It also gets rid of lots of rumors on NYUCD. I think NYUCD is really changing for a better future. NYU business school and med school both are world-class schools. I believe NYU has the potential to change the dental school into world-class school as well!!

Agreed. I think it's odd how NYU had an incoming class average of 3.14 in 2005 and for the entering class of 2007 their first round acceptance are mostly people with 3.5+ GPA and 20+ DAT scores and waitlisting other people who interviewed there with stats slightly below this. You can't make such a huge leap in incoming GPA overnight, it takes time.

its funny that email isn't making stuff up. its actually true, when i interviewed there i talked to ppl there and during the lunch session we left the group and talked to some kids eating there and asked whats the worst thing about it they couldnt' name anything and they also mentioned that positive aspects mentioned in that email. yah its all true.

the 3.14 was 2 yrs ago bud.....

I only heard good things during my interview as well. One unique thing I noticed, there was a range of patients across different socioeconomic levels which wasn't the case at a few other schools I visited. It may mean good things for scope of practice during the clinical years. The class president was very charismatic and encouraging. The strangest thing was how little the school did to market their obviously outstanding facilities.

correct me if i am wrong but wasnt last years GPA the GPA for 2006? Those last stats that you posted were for 2005, the yr before that. Hence there is another yr of GPAs that you are missing. The way you are using "last year" and "this year" makes it seem that these are two consecutive years when in fact, they are not.

Oh yeah, "bud?" I do my research before I post. See the proof, buddy. People like you spread the wrong information.

Since we are already being mean...People like you cant even interpret information correctly in the first place. Peace.

I loved NYU when I had my interview. The only thing that I didn't like was the cost. The facilities were great, the class president was cool, you can tell he loved being their. Their are many great opportunities avalabul to students if you seek them out. I was really impressed with the different clinics they have. I would love to go, but I am going to have to turn down their offer. Temple was great, just a little cheaper, and it is only 2 hrs away from NY. It is all coming down to cost.

NYU was far better than USC, and I thought NYU and Temple were on a level play field. As far as the rumors about NYU I dont think any of them are true now. maybe years ago, but they want to be top notch and it seems like they are going to.

You noticing a trend "bud?"

While I wish you were right, you have to look at the fine print. It has a little astrisk for NYU saying data is from 03-04 cycle 🙁. NYU doesnt really appear to be that "saftey school" or "last chance school" that it once was.

**I kinda wish they would change the data so they dont get peoples hope up. I didnt even realize the change until I saw the kind of scores getting rejected on predents (and im a stats maniac).

NYU was very nice. The facilities are great-its clearly in a nice area, the tour leader/class president was pretty excited about the school and everyone we met seemed to be,as well. But um...they kick you out of housing after a year so you have to live in downtown NYC which is pretty expensive I guess, and with living expenses and all...like 90K/yr to be one of 350ish people by D2? Eh.

Nearby studios (even nice ones) are cheaper than dorm studios, nearby 1-BR are cheaper than dorm 1-BR, and sharing a nearby 2-BR would be a lot cheaper than a "2-BR setting" offered in the dorms. Further, very few people after first-year would prefer to live in dorm housing.

I read a few of your posts, and it seems like you're gearing for Columbia. It's a phenomenal school, obviously... best of luck!

I know rankings don't apply any more. But the 1992 Gourman report points to NYU as ranking 9th out of 30 dental schools. Columbia was ranked 4th, Buffalo 13th and Stony Brook 24th. According to some of the old dentists I talk to, NYU was even considered the school to go to in the old days, while Columbia was a backup school. So NYU was very competitive as recently as 1992 and I strongly believe that they are already on their way up.

I don't know much about Columbia yet (I have an interview coming up soon), but I do like what NYU is doing and the intangibles it has over much, much smaller schools.

nyu seems like a nice place to be in. about those stats; they represent the stats of the entrance class only. as of now, we're all looking at the stats of potential attendees. a lot of these people will go for other schools and drop nyu. in the end, nyu will end up with something around a 3.3-3.4, i think. ofcourse, it has to be better than other years; gpa's rise almost every year, for any dental school.
i dont know how well reputed nyu's dental school is, but generally, nyu has a great reputation all over the world. plus, its in the list of "the new ivy leagues"😀
so, going to nyu will be a good decision.🙂

That may be true, I dont even know...but either way that 3.14/3.10 statstics are misleading. They appear to be the one school that still consistantly accepts the ~3.0 students (non-underrepresented minority), and it just doesnt seem to be as true anymore. I am curious why NYU didnt update their stats in the ADEA book since 03-04?? Seems like the one school that has made the biggest leap.

I think your theory may be correct, but Ive seen more and more threads where NYU was a serious consideration over other schools with the only downside being price and large class size (if thats a negative for you). Im not sure if many people will regard NYU as a "saftey school" and decline the acceptance if they get into another school.

Actually the ** next to New York University indicates the data is from 2004-2005. But yeah I agree. NYU doesn't seem to be a "safety" school.

does anybody know if anyone has been accepted with less than a 20? predents, if i remember right, does show anyone w/ less than a 20 being accepted. Its' like NYU only cares about your DAT score. I'm really nervous now...its the one school that i interviewed at that I havent heard back from..the others have put me on the waitlist:scared:

Good call...i thought i remember reading in a couple places that it was 03-04 stats, but your right its 04-05. Either way though, my point is the same.

During my interview, I remember my interviewer discussing my DAT scores and family. No discussion about my extracurriculars, why I was interested in dentistry, or etc. I was pretty blunt and candid in my personal statement, so maybe that was enough...? This was the only interview I had where the focal point of the conversation wasn't about the school itself. It was a surprising and pleasant deviation from the more uncomfortable interviews I had earlier in the month.

Loved the school when I interviewed there at NYU, new facilities, lots opportunities for their students, location also very very attracting. The only thing I dont like is the cost, if not because of the financial issues, I will definitely choose to go NYU over any other schools.

i got in, but now don't know if i should go.... the class size is just too big.... decisions...

They have more instructors compared to other schools. I was told by my interviewer that its a 1:6 teacher-student ratio when it comes to clinical work. I thought the school was pretty awesome. I would go, but right now its the price of living in NY that is making me hesitate a bit. 😛

I would go as far as say NYU has about the same student faculty ratio at most schools. 1:6 is pretty common, there are better. i suppose there are also worse...but 1:6 is pretty common.

I'm jumping on the NYU train now--just got my acceptance in the mail! 😀 I could definitely see myself happy at NYU and was very impressed with the faculty, program, and facilities for all the reasons listed above. Besides, I recently moved to NYC and I'm not ready to leave! I'm open to cheaper options if they come up, but for now, it looks like I'll be paying a hefty private school tuition regardless, so it might as well be at a school I really liked with endless opportunities and programs in one of the greatest cosmopolitan centers in the world. Cheers!

Congrats. When did u take the interview??

I interviewed the week of Dec. 4. Pretty quick turnaround, huh? (if only other schools could be so speedy!)

Hey LoF27 , Congrats, would you mind shareing your stats??

I interviewed at NYU nov 6th, still haven't received any word. I called today and they said my decision was mailed out on dec 13th. I'm going to go ahead and assume that its a rejection. Not cool..considering NYU was my #1.

Hey Amsie, the dorms are $1500 a month from what I have heard. My bro has a really nice 2 bedroom apartment in midtown, more expensive than down near NYU, for $1800 a month. I don't think the dorms are a bargain at all.

Also, the area is quite nice, so the price is somewhat worth it. Columbia, for example, is in a significantly worse location, thus housing will be cheaper, but right near bad areas...

just got the acceptance letter in the mail today! i interviewed on the 7th 😀 my app was complete there in november!! i applied super late, and was still able to get in. there is still hope everyone!!! congratulations to those who on in nyu!! i have my heart set on new york <3

Congrats Hinata!!! I haven't heard anything from NYU..not even saying my application was complete and I took the DAT a couple of days before u (10/7/2006). DAT is 21/23/17 and my GPA is 3.6+. Should I call them on Monday to see if they received everything (supplemental fee, picture)?

I got into NYU with a very low stats, my PAT and Math is below national average. And my GPA is just average and I also thought that my interview didn't go well either. So there is hope everyone.

i would call in. it wouldn't hurt right 🙂 the faculty there are all very nice, so i'm sure they'd help you out. i wish you the best of luck!!

I want NYU soooo bad. A good friend of mine is a D1 there, but it seems like they only want people w/ great stats these days. I interviewed early nov., still havent gotten a response. They told me it was mailed out dec 13th. Sounds like a rejection to me...any thoughts?
