I just solved the OAT practice exam and got a couple of questions..

1. What is the hybridization of a nitrogen atom if it forms two sigma two pi bonds?
Answer is sp3 but I chose sp2.. why is this sp3?😕

2. A sample of blood is added to a test tube containing a 1.6% salt sol'n. A short while later, the RBCs are observed to be smaller and wrinkled in shape due to water loss. This indicates that...
Answer says RBCs are hypotonic to the 1.6% salt sol'n. but I picked RBCs are hypertonic to solution since it got smaller and wrinkled (moving water out of the RBC). Isn't this hypertonic? Am I missing something? 🙁

Would someone please help me out!?! Thank you!!

Maybe you posted on DAT by accident?

Anyway, the nitrogen is bonded to 4 times, so it has to be SP3.
You might want to check out a hybridization video on youtube, that will clear that up much better for you. Try Freelanceteach.com

For the hypertonic vs. hypotonic, it depends on what solution you are referring to in reference to the other solution. In this case the RBC has a lower concentration of solutes compared with it's surrounding and therefore hypotonic and the surrounding solution is hypertonic. This means water will flow out of the cell.
