hi
i am interested in becoming a dentist or an optholomigist. in dental admission test the competetive score is 19-20 out of 30 for most dental schools, but what is the competitive oat score for optholomigist schools?
my gpa is 4.0 and i want to do the dental admission test in december. i already took physics 1 and 2, so i should be familiar with the oat test.
thanks

Optholomigists take the mcat. Optometrists take the OAT.

if you mean you want to become an optometrist and not an ophthalmologist, then you should try to get at least a 320 on the OAT to be somewhat competitive.

The maximum score on the OAT is a 400. Scores range from 200-400, although the average at most optometry schools for people who get in is abou 330 average.

Average OAT scores are not that high..

For the class of 2005, ICO was 320, NECO was 315 and St.louis was 318... Im not sure about anyone else

You are absolutely correct, but I just wanted to make the point that there definately are people who get accepted with OAT scores less than that. I know an OAT of 290 was for sure accepted last year at a couple of schools, so there is hope if you did score below a 330

We're all jumping the gun a little here, aren't we? I mean, issa, I don't mean to disparage you at all -- but do you know what the difference is between an optometrist and ophthalmologist? Make sure the profession really is what you want to pursue before you start taking OAT's, MCAT's or DAT's. You can't know that you want to do it unless you know what it is first.

i meant optometrist. i am going to stick with dentistry because i know a lot more about it, but i know few things about optometrist. i will see after i do the DAT test, but i think that the DAT is going to be easy because topscore pro 2005 edition had easy chemistry questions. i asked this question about optometrist because i wanted to know the competeive test score %. i think its 80%.
thanks anyways

I just took the OAT yesterday and I think I did really well. I scored a 360 Total Sciences and a 340 Overall. I killed Orgo with a score of 400!!!

for someone with a 4.0 gpa you don't know jack about the eyecare profession. i would do some reading prior to committing your life to something you don't really know.

what the heck are you going to say in your interview? that you had a 4.0 gpa and 600 on the oat? this is a joke.

get real!

Did anyone ever figure out what percentage she was talking about? 😕 😕 😕

i think maybe she meant that a competitve test score means getting 80% of the questions right on the OAT (or the DAT)? I don't think that's right at all though...i'm confused. 😕 oh well...

Perhaps she meant percentile, rather than %. In which case she would be close to being correct, a 300 is the 50th percentile. A score of 330 would be a percentile score of 80ish... Just a thought.
