Any recommendations for an OB text for a 2 month subspecialty rotation? I've pretty much exhausted the regular texts (Miller, M&M, Barash) in the 1st 10 days or so. Is Chestnutt worth the investment as a CA1 (soon to be CA2) or should i stick to something shorter? Anyone used A Practical Approach to Obstetric Anesthesia?

Then you have pretty much exhausted what you need to know in OB. If you're feeling perky, try some journal reviews.

If you just don't think you can survive without a thick-ass textbook, bum the book from your dept because I know no one else is reading it.

any other perspectives? i'm considering plopping down $164 for the new edition of chestnutt that just came out (we get some book money from the program). Is it really overkill?

You probably don't need to own any of the subspecialty texts unless you really plan on subspecializing. Miller & Barash have more than enough detail for even unusually curious or obsessive people.

I have a copy ... partly because I've done a lot of OB as a resident and expect to do a lot more than most as an attending, and partly because I just like having a large and current personal library. I just got it a few weeks ago and haven't read through it enough to compare it to the old edition, but it looks good. However for reasons that aren't really relevant to this thread I'm not your average debt-ridden resident and I didn't actually pay for much of my ridiculously expensive library myself anyway.

I wouldn't buy it unless you really have a future-OB-fellow level of interest. Like Bertelman says, just bogart your program's copy ... odds are it's not in demand. Spend the $164 on some good board review materials, a review course, or just blow it in Vegas.

Spend the money on review books, like Yao or Hall or something, and read through the OB topics. Go to the library and check out their copy.

Seriously, unless you are one of the 5 anesthesia residents that will be seeking an OB fellowship next year, it's not worth your money, even if it is a book acct. For that price, you can get probably 3 good anesthesia review books.
