hi

after much soul-searching, i've decided that ob-gyn is what i want to do! however, everytime i tell a classmate, doctor or family member, they look at me like i'm out of mind !! i really don't care what people think...but i do understand their concerns...

so far, i've based my decision to do ob-gyn based on my rotation/volunteer work without looking at the whole malpractice situation etc etc....i was wondering if you guys know of a good website or something that talks about the future of ob-gyn. also, i'm a new mother (yay!!) so obviously i'm looking for a somewhat "benign" residency (isn't everyone?!)...where can i get info on family-friendly residencies? also what do you guys think about getting a job with kaiser? i heard that the pay is not so good but the benefits and work hours are decent...does anyone have experience w/ kaiser?

thanks....and congrats to the newly matched class...this time, next year, hopefully i'll be in your shoes!

Hey Anastacia23,

I am so glad you posted the question, because I too have just decided that I want to pursue ObGyn, but even my attendings at the department are discouraging me!

Their biggest complaint was litigation, having the stress of delivering babies (even after joining a group, they were implying that you are still doing a lot of night calls), low income (I thought median income is 200,000?). I was told to go into internal medicine or do peds. anything but regular OBGYN! (was told to go into subspecialty of OBGYN if I was to go into the field)

I would like to have some info on kaiser, my career goal is ultimately to have a private practice that involves primary care Gyn care. (wondering if this is feasible?)

Knowing where to look for info would be nice...

Call me an optomist, but I believe the current malpractice problem will be fixed. It has to. There are too many areas where OB/GYN's and others are pulling out because of lawsuits.

I live in Texas, and we recently passed malpractice reform limiting non-economic damages (pain and suffering/punitive) to 250 K. Many lawyers aren't taking the cases anymore because there isn't enough money in it for them.

As far as a family friendly residency, I am going to be an intern at Scott and White Hospital in Temple, TX. It is a university program (Texas A&M) with a great call schedule (Q14 interns, Q28 second and third year). You just have to live in a small town. Houses are cheap, new 3 and 4 bedroom for under 130k.

Anastacia23--
You may like checking out mommd.com. In the forums there are regularly "how family friendly is_____" questions and lots of the folks there end up in ob/gyn. Besides, it's very nice to have a community of other mom/docs out there.

I am at a turning point. I have practiced OB/Gyn in India. I am here for last 4 yrs. I have cleared Step 1 in 3 attempts,Step 2 in 2 attempts and Step 2 CS in 2 attempts. Please can anyone tell me if I stand any chance in residency in Ob/Gyn.

I am also interested in OB/GYN despite the long hours and the malpractice "drawbacks". Does anyone know the average salary of an OB/GYN in North Carolina after malpractice insurance? (I know that salary largely depends on the type of practice and hours worked but I am looking for a general estimate--so no sarcastic replies---please!!).

think about it, popular/well paying specialties go in cycles... take anesthesia: for a long time it was just an average specialty... then no one was going into it... then the reimbursements went through the roof... now its one of the most competitive/desirable specialties (if you like that sort of thing)...

so think about OBGYN. right now no one wants to do it. more and more spots go unfilled. more and more people aren't doing deliveries. so think about what will happen to demand! we're getting in at the perfect time. and as for malpractice, the system will implode shortly, its not sustainable. theres going to be fewer and fewer OB's, then there will be high profile cases of things gone wrong because of OB shortages, and they'll change the laws. it'll be ten years before we finish medschool/residency/fellowship, things will change by then and we'll be the only ones standing and able to reap a fantastic job market.

I would hardly say that anesthesia is one of the most competitive specialties around; it's also hard to predict the future of ANYTHING, just because one thing is trending towards unpopularity doesn't mean it can't become even more unpopular in the future (take family medicine). Maybe we'll move towards a model of mid-wivery used in many other countries..who knows? I mean if you told me 15 years ago that CT would decline because of statins and IR, I would have laughed.

Yeah, that would sure suck. By the way, do Midwives practice OB only, or they also do Gyn. Do they also deliver High-Risk cases? Do they do ceaserians?

Thanks.
