Apparently, you need to do a 5-yr general surgery residency and then a 2-yr fellowship in peds surgery.

BUT I was wondering if you could instead complete a 4-yr OBG residency and still be eligible for a fellowship position in a peds surgery program.

That brings me to my next question: what's the relationship between the OBG field and the field of peds surgery?

No. I cannot think of a peds surgery program in the country that will accept someone who is Board Certified/Board Eligible in OB/gyn. Most peds surg fellowship websites are pretty explicit that they will only accept general surgeons.

General surgery residents rotate through pediatric surgery during their residency. OB/gyn residents do not, and therefore have no experience with peds surgery.

That brings me to my next question: what's the relationship between the OBG field and the field of peds surgery?

Not a whole lot. I believe that there is ONE place in the country where MFMs (i.e. high risk pregnancy physicians) are dabbling a little bit with in utero procedures, but this is DEFINITELY not the norm across the country. And it's not expected to ever become the norm.

If you want to do peds surgery you have to go into general surgery. General surgeons don't even consider OBGs real surgeons...

While it is definitely true that you cannot do Peds surgery unless you do general surgery, the above posting is correct. I am at one of the extremely few places where an MFM trained physician performs FETAL... not PEDS... surgery.

Additional, achiever, please be aware that while there is in some places tension between general surgery and ob/gyn it is not that way in all places. Gyns actually do two of the most frequently performed surgeries in the country. And you are posting in an OB/Gyn forum, so have a little more respect for your audience.

Based on previous posts, I believe that achiever is an OB/gyn resident, who switched into OBG from general surgery. I think he/she is just making that observation to warn the OP (who may not be aware of any tensions between GS and OB).

There is one way you can do peds surgery in ob/gyn and that by doing an peds gynecology fellowship after ob/gyn - 2 yr fellowship at Univ of Louisville and Baylor - you will find that there is actually a lot of gyn surgery - dealing with children with ovarian tumors, cysts, and endometrial abnormalities, hymenectomies, labial agglutination, etc. Of course you'll only be dealing with gyn cases but that way you can do peds surg and practice ob if you like
