Hello. I'm applying ObGyn this year as it was the only time in 3rd year where I looked forward to getting home in the morning and didn't notice when 12 hours had already gone by (bit of a stretch, but I was still having fun). Met with our administration recently and I was told that my chances were slim and that I should apply a backup specialty.
My Step 1 score was 195. Unfortunately, my preclinical grades were fine and my practice exams had been in the 220s-230s. I had some pretty bad test anxiety which I got sorted out after doing poorly on a shelf exam. Continued third year with average shelf scores and quite good evals. Throughout medical school I've been involved in research and have published 2 articles and have several projects currently ongoing that will result in publications before the end of my fourth year (hopefully). Some of my research has been done with faculty in the ObGyn department at a top 10, and I have pretty good relationship with them. I've been pretty involved with volunteering with our women's health clinic and other activities/extracurriculars. I believe my application would stand a good chance if I can get it on someone's desk!
Currently, I'm studying for Step 2 CK (not so worried about CS). I'm hoping to do 230+ to show I've improved from my Step 1 score... I think I'll have to apply pretty broadly to community and rural programs esp in the Midwest, but I'd be okay ending up there for sure. Anyone have any ideas/advice for how to improve my chances for applying ObGyn this year? Thanks!
Tl;dr: love ObGyn, ****ty Step 1, good research and application otherwise. Seeking advice to maximize chances.
