For all you folks already in medical school, what needs to be done during the summer before school starts? I want to work for a rural health group in India for ten weeks, and I would probably get back to the states the week before school starts. Is this feasible? Thanks.

just some financial aid paperwork and immunizations. you could probably have your folks fill out most of the paperwork and fake your signature or whatever. or maybe they can fax it to you and you can fax back your real signature.

Could be tricky if you're planning to move to a new city/apartment. I'd allow as much time as possible for the move and for settling into your new surroundings. I'm wondering if 9 days will be enough for me to do this. One has to set up phone service, buy food, get situated etc. I think a week should be ok.

Thanks guys. Sorry, I'm kind of ignorant, but would I be able to work out an apartment before I left, say about three months before I planned to move in?

I did something similar to what you're suggesting and it worked fine. I spent a month in Africa and returned about two weeks before classes began. I had found an apartment before leaving and moved in a week after returning (a few days before classes started). I also tried to have all of the immunizations and financial aid stuff resolved before leaving the country (definitely a good idea). I'd say go for it, as you may never have that much time to spend abroad in an awesome experience like that (although I'm hoping to spend this summer b/t med 1 and 2 back in Africa again (my fourth time)). Best wishes and enjoy your summer!
