I'll be studying med in Australia (UQ) starting Jan 2008. Can anyone please enlighten me if it possible to get Australian PR status during med school itself, or will I have to wait till graduation there? I am considering doing postgraduate medical training in AUstralia so getting PR status will definitely help.

It might be possible with a previous degree that's on the DIMIA skills list. You can apply as a skill migrant providing that you have enough points. Warning, depending on which skill/degree you possess, you might have to show at least 2 years of work experience. I don't want to discourage you any further but have you read about the 10 year moratorium? Also a PR might be easier to get in let's say WA or TAS than in Victoria or Queensland.

10 year moratorium is easily by passed if you want to work in an under serviced area. I've seen it cut down to as little as 1 year. Also keep in mind this includes all of your training after you get your PR - so in all but the most densely populated area (ie right in the heart of the city) it's usually reduced to 5 years, which is the length of most training programs anyway.

I looked into this as well since I'm also going to be at UQ for 2008, and you have to be very careful when trying for an Aussie PR while in school (this is all written up in the MBBS hanbook and other info on the site) because if you get it, then your place in the medical program is no longer secured as an international place and then you have to hope that they will convert you over to a full-fee-paying domestic place. If not, you risk being booted from the school so be careful!!
I'd love to have the PR cause then you can stay without the restrictions of the 10 yr. moratorium, but that's something that may well change by the time we're done our 4-5 years there....

hey actually, i think if you don't get PR before you graduate from the aussie school, ur still subjected to the moratorium rule.

nah rules like the moratorium are not gonna change for the good... part of the reason for its implemtnation is to protect local doctors... i can't imagine oz gov making the rules more lax when a lot more oz local will be graduating.

I really want to know. I calculated my score. I have about 110 right now. I need 10-15 more. How to get this score?

Anybody here got Aussie PR status? It should be pretty easy, much easier than getting American or Canadian PR status.

To get 5 extra points being from an area in need or regional area really helps, also being bilingual will get you another 5 points.

You can always marry an Aussie chick, wait 2 years and get your pr.... or the fastest way to get a pr is to have a baby... plus the government gives you $5,000. OH if you think I'm joking, I'm not.

You could lose your place in medical school if you get a PR while you are enrolled. Some schools might reclassify you as a Domestic Full Fee student, but don't count on it. Right now it is not difficult for international students to remain in Australia because of the physician shortage. In general students in health sciences courses will not have serious problems staying here, there is shortage of workers in the healthcare system here.

Joe, in your opinion, do you think that physician shortage will still exist four years from now? I think I'll want to stay in Aus and at least do an internship after I graduate from Flinders (Dec 2012), but I hope the shortage will work in my favor!
