Many physiatrists do some proportion of occupational medicine. Some PM&R doctors actually do an occupational medicine residency/fellowship after completing a PM&R residency. I thought that some of you might find this information about salaries for occ med doctors interesting. Combining occupational medicine training with a MBA degree can be quite lucratiive and is an option for those considering leadership positions in the business side of medicine (of the medical side of business!)

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Chicago, August 21, 2001?The median annual salary of occupational and environmental (OEM) physicians increased slightly (0.6%) since 1998 to $145,500, reports the American College of Occupational and Environmental Medicine (ACOEM) in its 2000 biennial compensation and benefits member study. The median salary figure in 1998 was $143,800. Only one in ten members surveyed experienced a salary decrease between 1999 and 2000.

ACOEM members nationwide reported base salaries ranging from $40,000 to $650,000, reflecting nearly a 35 percent response rate from a random sampling of 2000 members included in the study. OEM physicians holding an MBA degree ($214,737) and those practicing in emergency medicine ($200,966) received the highest average salaries in the U.S. Regionally those practicing in California or Hawaii ($158,939) and in the Midwest ($154,167) received a higher average salary than other areas of the country.

drusso,

thanks for the useful post. since u have an MPH, heres a question for u.

if you are interested in pursuing the business side of medicine, whats the need for doing a PM&R residency before completing an occupational medicine residency and attaining the MBA?

i mean, wouldnt u save time by skipping the PM&R residency and just going straight to the occ med residency, and then getting the MBA?

just curious if you need to finish a primary care residency before pursuing an occ med residency.

drusso, could you help me with the above post? i am having trouble getting the answers to these questions. could u direct me to a useful source where i can get more info? thanks.

I guess it depends upon what setting you eventually see yourself ultimately landing. If you want to do *STRAIGHT* occ med and corporate medicine, then by all means skip the PM&R residency and just do the occ med residency (which will require completing an internship or transitional year). Straight occ med involves a lot desk work and policy work. You'd be creating and implementing health and medical related procedures and practices, negotiating healthcare contracts, etc.

If you want to do more of a consulting/referral practice then it helps to have a particular clinical slant as some significant portion of your income will be generated through face-to-face patient care. In that case, I think that a PM&R residency with a strong musculoskeletal curriculum is the way to go as most occupationally related injuries are musculoskeletal in origin.

Does that help?

Drusso,

thanks for your reply. If I wanted to do "STRAIGHT" occ med and corporate medicine, do u think it would be necessary for me to get an MBA as well?

do you know where i could get more info or guidance if i chose this career route?

I would think that once you get into a corporate or occ med setting that there will be so many different ways to complete an MBA (night classes, weekend courses, online courses) etc. You'll be surprised. Moreover, typically people work in the corporate world for a few years before going to get their MBA--executive programs or traditional ones. There are even special "physican-MBA" programs available for busy docs. Concentrate first on the occ med training---that will be the primary reason why firms recruit you---then look at other "business training" opportunities.

anyone else have any further thoughts?

can you enter an occupational medicine residency right after finishing your intern year?
