What are some occupations I could apply or look into after finishing dental school, I was thinking of more cosmetic dentistry but I've really only heard of orthodontist and oral surgeon. Could anyone provide me with some information or links where I can learn more about this? thanks.

There is no such specialty called "cosmetic dentistry." After dental school, assuming you're at the top 10% of your class, you may choose to specialize in a certain field such as Endo, Prostho, Perio, OMF, Ortho, Pedo etc.

However, it all depends on how well you do in dental school because specialties like ortho and OMF is really really really really hard to get into. So I would focus my time on figuring out how to get into dental school first before thinking about what to do after. viz. don't count your chickens before they hatch.

cosmetic dentistry is not one of the ADA recognized specialties. to be a dental specialist, you have to undergo at least 2 years of accredited training in: pediatrics, orthodontics, periodontics, endodontics, oral surgery=OMF (oral and maxillofacial surgery), radiology, pathology/oral medicine, or prosthodontics.

On the contrary, I know people who got into specialties (OS, Endo, even Ortho) without having "top 10%" credentials. They didn't even have 90's on their boards. You can work hard and be #1 in your class, doesn't mean you will automatically specialize.

Post-grad programs don't publish the stats of their students, there is a reason for that. It gives them room to select applicants however they see fit.

I think the newbie is just confused what you can do with a DDS degree after dental school. Most people who graduate dental school get a job as a general dentist. They either go work for someone, buy a practice, or start their own practices. Some people do a residency for a few years before heading to practice. The residency can be a year or two in general dentistry (these are called GPR or AEGD) or it can be in one of the specialties texasdds listed. They do residencies if they feel they want to learn more dentistry in a post-school learning environment, or if they want to become specialists like Orthodontists or Oral Surgeons. If after graduation you want to learn more procedures that are more focused on "cosmetics" that you maybe didn't learn in school, then dentists usually pay for and take continuing education courses in areas that interest them. Other options if you don't go into private practice include working in academics as a dental school professor, going into research, or joining the military.

All dentistry is 'cosmetic dentistry'! I think being a GP is really cool, you get to see everything, and nothing stops you from doing CE and learning new things: implants, wizzies, 3rd molar RCs, and more! My GP is one of the most well respected implant dentists in Ohio, but he learned it in CE, not as a periodontist

does that say more about the GP in question, or about the perios who chose to live in Ohio...

So i was just typing random things into google and i thought, "what kind of dental specialties are out there?"
And my most revenant was:
ADA.org: Dental Specialties
This page provides information about Dental Specialties.
www.ada.org/prof/ed/specialties/index.asp - 37k
Amazingly, i realized that i could have gotten my answer in seconds instead of waiting for someone to post to a forum to help me and that i am self-sufficient.
LOL.. sorry i am so rude, but seriously?

dont forget about Dental Public Health... not really my cup of tea.
