Do most people who do well in OChem on the DAT, in regards to nomenclature, able to just look at the structure and figure it would without writing anything down?

I have to usually draw out the structure, and I feel like that wastes a lot of time. If most people are able to do it without writing anything, I want to know, so I can start practicing as well.

Thanks!

Not writing the structure out is a recipe for DISASTER,,,,,,,KISS OF DEATH !
What happens if you need to find the longest chain ?

What if two parent chains exist having the same length ?

What if more than one functional group exists?

Don't think of it as wasting time...you are INVESTING time in order to answer the questions like a BEAST !

Obviously if its a long carbon skeleton you should draw it, but you can immediately tell if its a short-medium carbon chain even with 2 or 3four functional groups or double bonds if thats what your asking
