Alright, so it looks like when I transfer to a UC next year, I'm probably going to have to take both ochem and physics at the same time. Yeah, yay, life will suck. Anyway, I'm wondering what everyone's opinion is on taking some of the ochem and/or physics during the summer then finishing up the rest of it during the normal school year, the idea being that at least once one of the sequences is done, life won't be as hellish, although granted the summer sure will be. Thoughts, ideas, advice, inane ramblings from idiots, etc.?

I pesonally wouldn't - just because I have to have time for my brain to recharge between school years.

I wasted my summers working, which did earn me some money (which I've spent by now), but got me nothing lasting. Taking some of the pre-reqs now would lighten your load, AND allow you to focus on that class (and only that class) during the summer. Maybe it's just my modified nostalgia talking, but I'd say take one of them over the summer.

Oh! Insane ramblings! I can do that!

Is gen. chem. still getting you down? How'd the homework go?

I haven't done ochem, yet. Just doing physics I and gen. chem. II this semester, along with 4 other classes. I was stressed out about that ahead of time because I'd heard that chem II was more difficult than chem I. I knew next to NOTHING about physics, and thought it might be my downfall.

One month into the courses, I can report that, yes, chem II IS a whole other level, but it's not bad, and it's much more interesting. The big (happy) realization is that physics, by comparison, is easy. Once it hit me that the two were the exact same math, both became easier. Phys I is the same math as chem II, except that there are fewer variables per problem; so, the solutions are simpler because they're more straight forward with way fewer steps. After all, chemistry really is just physics at a molecular level, and physics is just practical applications of math. Now I'm glad I took this batch of math, chem, and physics at one time because each helps me to understand the others better.

Is that enough insane rambling for you? I'm really just telling you to not stress out about the physics classes you have coming up. As for taking any of the classes over summer, it partially depends on where you intend to take them and whether you intend to cover one semester of one or both classes, or two semesters of one class.

It might not work very well to take a semester of either at one institution and then take the second semester at another. They could use different books, or there could be gaps which leave you at a disadvantage. Trying to do a full year's worth of a lab science over the summer is doable, but can leave you exhausted and not feeling refreshed and ready to hit a full fall schedule. I took 17 credits of math and foreign language this past summer, and and it really left me with very little time to unwind, or ever even feel like there WAS a summer this year. The thing about trying to cover 8 credits of lab science over the summer is that you wind up spending so much time in the classrooms and have a huge amount of reading and studying to do before you head back in the very next day.

That's my perspective on it right now. Next semester I might hum you a whole new tune when I'm trying to do physics II and orgo I along with another 4 courses. At least I'll be done with this ridiculous English class!

Insane rambling complete

Lol, actually I used the term "inane ramblings" to give a slight nod to the trolls on the board who seem content to just sputter useless crap in the vain hope someone actually cares about whether they live or die, although since inane means lacking substance and your post doesn't, not even a possibility of being inane. 😉

And yes, gen chem II's still making me want to stab myself with an icepick. I spent a good chunk of the weekend doing a lot of homework and then turned it all in today and had about the same amount of homework spat back out which is due in not several days but 24 hours since it's due next class meeting on Wednesday.

I actually would be taking the courses at the same place though if I did some during the summer. What I'd probably do is take Physics 1 w/lab and Physics 2 w/lab during the summer and Orgo 1 w/lab then take Physics 3 w/lab and Orgo 1 & 2 w/lab during the school year. Although I don't know how much that would help, and it'd make for a summer that could loosely be defined as hell. 😛 If physics isn't that bad, maybe I won't worry about taking it at the same time as ochem.

As it is, next semester will suck anyway...going to have to take 20 units to finish the one class I'm shy of an associate's on (getting it to help me find a job when I move) and the GE for IGETC....botany, zoology, speech, german 1, art appreciation, and advanced scuba.

Bleh, too much crap to do. Just plain too much. 😛

pun intended?

i wouldn't add orgo 1 w/lab with the other two during the summer. either take physics 1+2 w/lab OR orgo 1 w/lab. personally if i were forced to take summer classes, i'd take classes focused on one subject.

Well, see, relief from that same pressure of feeling like I HAVE to do another 20 credits next semester to get that AS degree is why I feel so carefree this week.😛 I was doing this semester & next just so that I could fill the gen. ed. reqs for the uni & finish the AS, too. This semester isn't nearly as bad as I'd thought it might turn out to be. I had thought that the science/math together might be too much, but, no; those are great. It's an anal-retentive English instructor who is being intentionally irritating! Too bad. I really enjoy a good, thought filled English course. Realized that if I fore go the AS, then I don't have to risk getting someone similar for a Lit class, and don't need Public Speaking. So, I can go ahead and do the 20 credits, but take a psych class and another programming class, instead. I'm much happier and more relaxed, now.😀 Otherwise, I was thinking of trying to convince them to let me take 23 credits, just to get some more programming in. Computer classes are like having a playtime break during the day.

Are both your schools on the quarter system? I agree with not trying to take 2 physics and 1 orgo in the summer. You might consider the first 2 orgos, instead. That way, if the final orgo overlapped w/the first physics in the fall, you'd be taking one that was probably difficult and one that was rather simple. OR - you could take the physics and just read and do something like the Virtual O-Chem website over the summer. You'd have a little more background understanding before the fall semester. So, it wouldn't ALL feel new.

Oh, what does IGETC stand for?

Yeah, I think either way next semester will be a busy one because there's just too many things I want to do. If I didn't do the speech class after all and forewent the AS, then there'd be no excuse why I couldn't finish up calculus 2 before I transfer, which would involve taking it through a teacher who is legendary for being a crappy one, so eh. I think I'll just leave it alone. I definitely understand about English teachers...I hate 'em, all of 'em! 😛 at least there's some point at which you can relax.

IGETC is the general ed worksheet that Cali people follow to fill our GE reqs. If we have it completed before we transfer, we're exempt from GE after we transfer, so basically we're already done.

O-chem and physics at the same time isn't bad at all.
