Hello. I am planning to take ochem1 this summer at CC.
Is ochem1 really hard to handle during summer?
Is taking ochem1 at CC a good idea?

i don't know if i'd recommend taking ochem during the summer -- shoving a lot of complicated stuff into a small amount of time

and i don't know if i'd recommend taking a bcp course at a cc, especially something like ochem - i think that's more for gen ed stuff, but i could be wrong. i know other people on this thing know better than i do, but that's what i've gotten from reading other threads.

There's nothing wrong with taking orgo in the summer, just make sure you dedicate a lot of time for it.

Also make sure whether or not your university accepts credit at an outside institution after a certain number of credit hours.
For example, at my school, after you have 60 hours of credit on your transcript you cannot get any more credit from an outside institution.

I'm doing the exact same thing this summer at my local CC. They aren't offering ochem 1 or 2 over the summer at the university I'm matriculated at. I'm also taking physics 1, but in the 2nd session (not together... I'm not a masochist). We have an epermit option, so once I finish the class it is automatically transfered with the credits and grade to my regular university and counts against my graduating gpa, not sure if you have this.

I'd say go for it, but be sure to drop right away if you think it will be too difficult. I tried to take Calc I over the summer once and it was just moving way too fast. But, I took physics during the summer and did just fine.

Don't worry too much about it being at a CC, I did all of my pre-reqs at my CC before I transferred (though adcom's don't see that as the best way of doing it) and I got in just fine. Be sure that if you need Ochem for your degree to graduate, that your school will accept it for your degree. Some universitites won't accept core sciences from CC's if you're already a student at the university. But other's do only for the summer, it depends, so ask.

Taking orgo during the summer is a fine idea as long as it is the only class you are taking during that session. In some ways it is nice that you can focus all your studying on one course.

The CC on the other hand may not be the best plan - from my experience with adcoms and my university's pre-health advisory, taking a prereq (especially one as important as organic) at a CC is not a good idea and can reflect poorly on your transcript. Every adcom is different, but it might be a turnoff at a lot of schools. But it may not matter at all to other schools - just something to think about.

Whether or not it will be a "turnoff" will be a function of how well he/she does on the DAT. A 16 AA/OC might fit the description while a 26 might considerably soften the blow.

im taking ochem with GE class.... do you think it is doable?

I did Ochem I and II over the summer and I'm glad I did it that way. It was difficult, but doable. The only concern I would have is the fact that it is at a CC. Some schools (not all of them I'm sure) frown upon pre-reqs being done there. I would check with where you plan on applying before you do it. Best wishes!!

There is nothing wrong with taking ochem classes at a cc, especially in this tough economy. I know many students at UCI who are not taking summer classes because of the budget cuts so they are taking a couple units at a CC (paying $20 a unit compared to $145 😡).
