Ocpm

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
I am curious to know why you do not think OCPM is a top school? There are only eight anyway so it really is difficult to really choose which better than what, but this is intriguing.

Anyway, I strongly believe it does not matter which school is the best, what really matters is how comfortable one is with their program and the surrounding environment. I mean 100 percent residcency placement for the past several years sure gives OCPM some credit I think though.

How people generally rank schools is based on a few things. Most people judge schools based on admission standards and board scores. Also, people are quick to defend their schools in the beginning but as they progress in their education and begin rotating with students from other programs, it is pretty easy to see which programs prepared their students well and which did not.

These are usually how most programs are judged.

The thing is 100% residency placement is not a reflection on the caliber of the school anymore because there are way more residency position than students. I think that the more accurate bench mark would be how many of those placement were 3 year programs and which programs have been obtained.

This is extremely personal. For some it is surgical numbers, for others it is reputation, still others research and fellowship opportunites. It would be like saying what makes a good vaction spot.

I am very confused by your responses. You seem to give OCPM a lot of good remarks, but do not consider it one of the better schools out of all eight. Could you please share why you feel that way when you get the chance? Thanks much.

Granted what we hear is rumor and not fact but that is what opinions are based on many times. I do not feel that OCPM is a poor school but some things I have heard I have issue with and maybe you can clarify.

1) I heard that OCPM's 2006 graduating class had quite a few 4.0 students. That to me says that the classes are too easy.

2) Poor first time pass rate on Part 1 boards.

3) Poor class profiles.

These are big things when I look at strong programs. Also, the structure of the program (integration of other medical programs).

I'll tell you what I know based on my experience there...
1) That is a rumor - they had 4.0 students but not in dense quantities - however, that class did score really well on their Part II boards (from my understanding anyway).

2) Definitely was not a 100 percent rate - it was above the national average though (national average being 83%)

3) Yes, the class profiles of the matriculating class is always different after 4 years of school - goes back to the fact that they admit too many people (quite a few being underqualified) only to see them fail out after a year or so.

To answer the recent inquiry as to why its not a top 3 school - To me it is purely subjective - yes the residency placement deal is great - but I think other variables can come into play - i.e. the structure of the classes, the board pass rates etc. a 100% percent residency match is strong but doesn't necessarily say the whole story about the program. I mentioned in the previous page a certain criteria for the top 1,2 or 3 schools and I don't feel that OCPM has all those criteria (again subjective point of view). I'm not saying its not a great school - I go there, and I am still learning a great deal from this program - but I can't make that statement for every student enrolled.

As a student there, I think the program is definitely worth a visit or look - But I don't think students should make the decision to go there before interviewing at other schools.

I am of the opinion if you have one 4.0 student that is a miracle. More than one I question the level of difficulty, especially in medical school.

Fair enough, I agree with you in principle but I should note that this phenomenon is not common in all graduating classes (multiple 4.0). Then again, what do I know, I'm not in the 4.0 club lol...
