I am planning to move back to the Midwest to practice following graduation next year. Can I get feedback from anyone currently working in one, or who has in the past regarding their experience? Good, bad, or otherwise. Thank you in advance, I appreciate it!

I've never worked at Walmart save for a handful of fill in days but here's the deal with just about every commercial relationship:

1) The only way to make any sort of money in them is to be the lease holding doctor. If you are being employed by the lease holding doctor, it's a dead end street.

2) Be cautious about the number of hours you commit to commerical locations, particularly if it's a new one. Just about every chain out there will want you there 5, 6, or even 7 days a week even if there is no where close to the patient volume to justify that. Try to negotiate a clause in your contract that says you will add days when the average number of exams seen in a day is XX.

while there are RARE exceptions, pretty much everything is bad about working for a corporate optical. You may hear from some other ODs that corporate isn't all that bad but trust me it is. Some of the problems are obvious and aggressive, and others are subtle and passive. You will likely compromise pt care, you will definitely have low career satisfaction, and you probably won't make that much money. The only upside is that at least you can get a "job" and pay the man back. gotta pay the rent.🙄
