did anyone not submit a letter of recc from an optometrist? The person I was relying on to write me one is unable to do so (health reasons - hope he gets well soon!!) and i don't have a strong enough relationship with other people I have shadowed. I don't really want to spend time shadowing again to get a letter - i'm already a lot later at submitting my application that I would have liked. so...has anyone had problems getting interviews without having an OD letter? would you guys recommend I submit even later to get a letter, or should I go ahead and submit?

thanks! 🙂

You can submit, but in order to get accepted and matriculate into any OD program, you'll need that OD letter.

Most schools require an OD letter but some do not. You should look it up depending on where you want to go and then decide from there. I think an OD letter would be beneficial though.

Hi,
Some schools don't require an OD letter but strongly recommend one. I did not submit an OD recommendation and was able to obtain a couple of interviews and got in. So, its not that big of a deal. However, some like ICO or PCO would not extend a secondary or interview unless an OD letter is in (personal experience). Submit your application if you are applying for Fall 2012, and call the school and ask specifically what their recommendations are. Good luck!

Im not sure about ICO but I got an interview and was accepted to PCO w/o a letter from an OD

thank you for all of your help!! - much appreciated!! 🙂

@robotcat123 - which schools did you interview/ get accepted at? (CONGRATS!)

I didn't have a letter from an OD, but I did have a committee letter from my college. I got into SUNY and PCO.

Same here. However, I did tell them that an OD letter would be forthcoming, and it was sent the day after my interview, apparently. I would recommend getting your application in as soon as possible, but also contact your school and let them know about your circumstances. Perhaps you could write a little addendum in your essay. If a letter is required, then you should look for a new person or else ask one of the doctors that you already shadowed with. Even if you don't have an exceptionally strong rapport, you might be able to explain your situation and get them to write on your behalf. I'm sure they picked up on some of your personal attributes. And really, getting the letter seems to be a bit of a formality for record purposes. Just try your best to get something in to the schools. Good luck!
