Hey Guys,

I heard that if you get an interview really early (before dean's letter comes out) it means program really likes you and all they need to do is interview you to make sure you are a normal person. And if they like you when they interview your chances of program ranking you are really high. Is this true?? I know some programs interview more people than others but early interviews must mean that program really likes you??
😀

There might be some truth to this, but not dependably so. Many places, if not most places, send out interviews before the dean's letter comes out. It was my experience that only the biggest name academic programs wait until the release of the dean's letter to grant interviews (go the the interview thread to see what programs are obviously absent). The other programs just have a preset algorithm based on objective data, and therefore it is hard to judge how much they "like" you based on when you get an interview. For all of these places, timing of interview invites likely just correlates with what number in the stack your application is.

All that to say, in general, I agree: getting an interview earlier is better than later. But don't hang your hat on this guaranteeing a high ranking.
