I have a friend who would like to go to medical school next year. His MCAT's are average (30), his GPA is average 3.5 and decent EC's. However, he has not completed the AMCAS yet. He has put it off and put it off. With those kind of stats, what kind of chance do you think he stands getting in the game this late?

That's what I thought. I mean he is not applying to the most prestigious schools or anything. I mean what about at the University of South Dakota. That is where he will apply at. What are his chances at a school like this, this late in the game?

I think your "friend" better get on the ball, and quit slackin'. This is very late in the game, so you, I mean your "friend" should maybe consider waiting until next year.


PS. I'm NOT saying you won't get in, each case is different. But taking a year off would also allow you to increase the "decent" EC's. And besides, it's only one year of your life. I mean your friend's life.😀

Honestly not me. I have done secondaries and am waiting to hear from Stanford, Wash U, and Hopkins. I have interviews at Baylor, Northwestern, UNMC. I am already accepted at Creighton. It really is a friend. No need to act like I am trying to pull one over on you.

Most deadlines for primaries have already passed anyway. Don't know about Univ. of SD... Good luck to your friend, but he might want to wait til next year.

Heres the thing. If your friend was as excited about applying to medical school as I was, he would have turned that AMCAS/AACOMAS app in June 1st, and been drooling every since.
I have similar numbers ( 32O, 3.9) applied to 4 schools (2 MD, 2 DO), have gotten accepted at both DO schools, and an upcoming MD interview in a couple weeks.
The lack of initiative says more about desire than anything.

I wholeheartedly agree with you. Here is the thing. I checked and the USD deadline for the primary is Friday. I am not sure he even realizes it. As a friend I want to tell him. I mean he is a good friend and I wish the best for him. However, the process is meant to weed people out who are not driven, responsible, and organized. So, now I am debating whether I should tell him about the deadline. Thoughts??

Yeah, sure, go ahead and tell him. But also tell him he'll be wasting hundreds of dollars because there's next to no chance he'll get in anywhere. Med schools look at an eleventh hour application the same way as anyone else would, that the person didn't care enough to do it earlier. Better to wait till next year. He'll regret it if he doesn't.

at this point, he might as well wait til next june, do something very interesting in the meanwhile, be one of the first to submit their app etc.

Really? thats interesting... so what would you guys consider being a 'late' AMCAS application? we talking about October? November? while we're on the topic.... let me ask for some advice...
yeah I've been complete at 10 schools since August... and gotten some positive responses.... however there are a few schools namely Tulane, Northwestern and Albany that I havn't completed... (just got my secondary from NW) and am wondering if I should complete them now? do I have a decent shot at an interview?!?

NW is only semi-rolling and releases most of their decisions in March(ish), so if you want to go there that might be something to consider re- finishing your 2ndary.

While chances may be slim... they're not completely none...

This is only one case scenario, but I've got a friend who turned in her AMCAS apps late in October, secondaries to two NY state schools close to December, interviewed in February, and got responses from both before March peeked its head around the corner. She only applied to state schools b/c it was late, their apps were easy, and she didn't think she'd have a shot at getting in.

If your friend does decide to apply, I hope that he's got money to burn, b/c that's what might happen. But it might be worth the effort. His choice, but the large concensus here says chill until next year.

And then there are the schools with non-rolling admissions where the time he interviews may not impact the decision as much...

I believe the osteopathic schools may have later deadlines. He could still possibly have enough to time fill out aacomas and secondary applications.

Well, I can only say from personal experience. I applied late October and sent in my secondaries really late. It wasn't not caring, I wrote my MCATs in August and had major anxiety about the whole letter of recommendation thing (don't know why). I only applied to four schools and, of those, I got two interviews, I got one accept and one waitlist (I withdrew from the waitlist when I got accepted to UofA, so I don't know whether I would have gotten in eventually).
So, it may not be a lost cause unless he misses the deadline. Also, FYI, my school did not even process (or download) my application until two weeks after their deadline, so I don't think it really mattered whether I applied two hours or two weeks before that deadline.

Not too late, you'll just have to recertify and resubmit (and pay more). Since you're already verified, it's not like the schools would be waiting on your information.

There are schools that have AMCAS deadlines through December 15th (with a few this weekend on the 15th of November). If you add a few with deadlines this weekend, you may find that you'll need a quick turnaround on the secondaries b/c they may possibly due at the end of the month. Actually, you'll probably need to get those secondaries out as soon as possible regardless of how late the deadline is. Might have a good chance at schools with non-rolling admissions, and may possibly get wait-listed at the rolling places, but there is still a good chance to get stuff in.

If your friend can meet USD's deadline I'd apply to only there... they interview all SD residents... but you have to have a complete application in by the AMCAS deadline (11/15)... I would call the office tomorrow and see if it is feasible to get everything in, if so in-state you've got a great shot. Also not sure if this applies, they encourage native american applicants, due to the patient population.

I called Mt Sinai this week to ask them a question and to also ask about being a late filer for my secondary. The woman I spoke to was really nice and said that the December 15 deadline was there for a reason, in other words, they take and READ every application they get up until that day.

She was really great and said that people every year send it back just at the end and if they're good applicants, they are considered as well as the good August people. Everyone gets the same look over by the committee.

That made me feel heaps better. So I would imagine that other schools would operate the same way. If they weren't really looking at anyone after the 15th of Oct, then I guess they would make that the cutoff.
