I have run through many posts on here and didnt find exactly what I wanted, but dont shoot me if you find it, please...

Does a student from ODU have a better chance of getting into EVMS than other schools? I am transferring so I cant take advantage of the guaranteed programs. I am trying to decide between William and Mary and ODU. UVA is also on my list, as is VCU. (So if you can give me some perspective on which school is going to fit me better, thanks- its more than welcome!)

I am originally from Virginia Beach, and my kids really want to go back, so EVMS is an awesome option for me... And I want to ensure I have the best chance possible.

Thanks!

No, I'm not convinced that ODU will necessarily help you, but that's just my opinion. I see that you haven't posted here a lot, but there is a school admissions rep. named Lizzy M. who refers to "feeder schools" to some med. schools, and I would guess that the main feeder schools for EVMS are UVA, W&M, Va. Tech., VCU=James Madison, ODU in that order. But this is just my opinion.
On the other hand, if you did go to ODU and this really helped in terms of family happiness, get the best GPA and MCAT, and EC's that you can get at ODU and you will probably do well. Best of luck.

I see this thread was started in June, but I hope this is still helpful. I would agree withy Nessy in all circumstances, but only if ODU and EVMS did not have a joint BS/MD Program, which they do. No other school has a joint program with EVMS and if you qualify, I would definitely recommend it as it guarantees acceptance into EVMS. I would highly recommend going to either UVA or W&M.

I went to VCU for medical school and would highly recommend it for medical school (shameless ploy). That said, VCU medical school and VCU undergraduate are basically separate schools. The VCU undergrad had a good showing at VCU medical school only because of their automatic acceptance program so I think that would cross off VCU as a program you should switch to if your end goal is EVMS.

In terms of number of people in my medical school class, I think we had either 0 or 1 from ODU. We had probably 8ish from william and mary and 30 from UVA. I imagine it is the same for every Va medical school. UVA and William and Mary probably have much higher showings compared to all other Va undergraduate schools.

So unless you get into an automatic acceptance program at ODU, I think UVA or William and Mary would be better schools to go to.

Now in terms of fit: William and Mary takes a specific type of person and the stereotype is generally a student who is a little high strung and nervous although this is not always the case. I think more people are happy at UVA and I feel that they have a wider appeal no matter what kind of person you are. I am a bit biased because I went to UVA for undergrad (although my sister went to W&M) but I have not met anyone who did not really love UVA.

If you are happier with eastern Va, William and Mary may be the most convenient. Overall, I think your options for medical school will be highest with William and Mary or UVA.
