Don't quote me on this, but I think people may be more cynical & less inviting to newbies on ODwire, from what I've heard.

I registered maybe 5 years ago and posted a few times, but was then kicked out curtly because I was pre-opt👎. I vowed not to consider rejoining until I get into OD school. SDN does the job for now. I doubt i'll even have time for odwire.

Believe me, far more ODs participate there than here. Its also way more private. There is also no OMD/OD ego battle, just a lot more real world. Now that I can help pre-opts over there I will probably rarely check SDN.

To be part of the "group" 😉 you have to commit to private practice, not give into low ball insurances, charge decent fees, practice full scope, and not be a weenie.

I encourage those who are seriously considering optometry as a career to register as a pre-opt on ODwire. There's thousands of optometrists there and lots of them have been in the business for 30-40+ years and are happy to share their experiences. There's only one or two ODs on this forum that have more than ten years experience and I think you'll find that those who have over a decade of experience have a better perspective and will be more helpful. Post year 2000 grads seem to have a more one-sided perspective, which is understandable, but not necessarily an accurate gauge when all things are considered.

I have a been a member for a few years and there are only a handful of (bitter) ODs that actually post. Just like SDN, their goal is for every pre-optometry and optometry student to drop out of school or leave optometry because the market is oversaturated. I can probably name all the posters that post on there on my two hands. I highly discourage this website for accurate information. If you want a dose of a reality, go shadow the ODs in your community, talk to frame/CLS reps, etc... Talk to real ODs instead of the virtual ones with no patients typing away on ODwire.

You know the reality? I have a residency trained, personable great OD friend who can't find stable work in a 1.7 million population area.
