what % of u guys plan on or have taken USMLE........is it possible to get competative allo spots with COMLEX if u do well....

if anyone with high COMLEX is applying to competative allo spots please post
or even if you first hand os people who have

When I speak to the second year students it seems that most of them are taking the USMLE. To get into a competitive allopathic residency in southern california it seems like a very good idea to take the USMLE. I spoke to a resident in internal medicine, and he feels that the reason he matched at his second choice instead of his first is because he only took the comlex. Some of his classmates with similar grades and comlexscores that took usmle matched at his #1,

I don't think the majority of MSUCOM students are taking the USMLE.
Since Michigan is one of the five unfortunate states where you HAVE to do an osteopathic internship year, I think most people(at least the ones I know) are just planning to do a linked/track D.O. residency .

You do not have to take the USMLE and I honestly think most of my fellow students are NOT taking this exam. I know I am and my roommate is also but for the most part I think most are gunning for the COMLEX only. There really is not a huge need for the USMLE unless your interested in a highly competive residency where they would like to compare "apples to apples". I know plenty of people that have only taken COMLEX and gotten great residencies AOA and ACGME.

In all I think it has to due with your goals, your attitude, if you have a particular residency that "would really like it" if you had a USMLE score, and ultimately your residency choice. There is a big difference in the amount of residencies from family medicine to derm. 🙂

1. About half of the class in my school typically takes both.

2. Yes, it is possible to get competitive ACGME spots if you do well on the COMLEX. It really is a case by case basis. Some programs prefer the USMLE, some require it, and some programs don't care.

i took the USMLE but only because it is required by one place to do rotations at as a visiting student. Other than that they don't require it. They accept COMLEX for residencies. Very odd but I don't ask questions

Wait, can you elaborate on this?
So if you go to MSUCOM you MUST do an osteopathic intership year?
Is that like a prelim or transitional year?
What if you do just third year there from another DO school affiliate hospital?

1. Not if you do an ACGME residency outside of Michigan.

2. It can be either.

TAKE USMLE 1 and 2! It helps you alot if you want to get into a competitive allopathic program esp anesthesia. it's a WAY better exam than the ****ty comlex exam. don't puss out, take the exam and you'll do fine. it will open doors for ya.

I have heard from a lot of people that comlex is poorly written. I was curious to find out in what way is it different. Are the question more confusing or poorly worded? too long? are the answer choices ambiguous?

i can't get into specifics, but the majority of DO students say that the comlex step 2 and 3 blow because the questions are poorly written. there is no comprehensive study guide like "first aid usmle", you basically study for the usmle and read some omt study guide book although there is hardly any omt questions in step 2 and 3. the usmle is well written with FAIR questions. i took usmle 1 and 2 and noticed a big difference between comlex step 2 and usmle step 2. the step one exams were both good and there are many other DO students that i know that would agree.

IF you want an allo residency take step II of USMLE (you do not have to take step I as a DO). Even during the scramble I was told because I didn't take USMLE I was not even considered for a spot that was unfilled. If you want surgery, or anything else that is a competitve specialty track take the damn test. I will be taking it this year as a resident and applying for PGY2 allopathic next year. IT's worth the hassle.

I've heard both sides on whether to take the USMLE or just the COMLEX. I opted to do just COMLEX. I've matched to an EM residency, but not sure how much just taking the COMLEX affected me in getting interviewed or ranked.

A number of ACGME EM programs will specifically tell you that USMLE is required. Others will prefer them. Obviously, you will want to make your application "preferred."

It seems that half the people from my school are taking both and the rest are COMLEXing it. The logic of those that will take both: You're already studying the same material for the COMLEX, so you might as well take both. I've heard it's best to take the USMLE before the COMLEX since you can cram more OMM/OMT stuff after the USMLE.

I think this is what I'm planning to do.

Can you provide the other states that require an osteopathic internship year?
I wasn't aware of this. Thanks!
