I plan to live off campus when attending NYU, but I am clueless on where I should start looking at.

I am looking for a simple place that is close to the subway for a single student . I don't mind taking the subway to the school as long it doesn't take more than 30 minutes. I hope that I will just spend under $1000 on rent per month since I just want a place to sleep/cook/shower. Can any current NYU students give me a region in New York that would mostly match my criteria? I would love to solve the housing problem ASAP.

Another option is that I have 200K that I can use to buy a place. Can I get buy a decent place for 200K close to NYU?

thank you!

You can't buy a place anywhere nearby school for $200K

Neighborhoods to look in:

Williamsburg, Brooklyn
Brooklyn Heights
Park Slope, Brooklyn
Astoria, Queens
Hoboken, NJ

But really, don't worry about it until the month before you're ready to move and be prepared to sign a lease immediately otherwise the apartment will be gone.

Sorry, you won't find ANYTHING on or near manhattan that's livable for 200k.

As far as renting, I know a lot of people live in brooklyn or queens that pay under 1000 for a pretty nice place. I even know a guy who lives in chinatown for $450/mo, which is absolutely ridiculous.

But, in all honesty, I would say spend the extra $200-$400 and live near school. Trust me, your time and strength are worth it, especially the first year. Go through NYU housing and get into Stuyvesant town, those apts are really nice and big for the price, and its a 5 min walk to school, plus NYU housing provides furniture (bed, dresser, desk etc)

You should check out Forest Hills in Queens. You might be able to pay off most of a condo/coop with 200k. This place is very livable, very safe, a bit trendy and over half the population commutes to Manhattan every day. If you take the express bus you can be there in about 45 mins and if you take the train it just depends on how close you live to the station but it is doable. Be careful if you do an online search, nearby towns all advertise as being Forest Hills when they are actually Kew Gardens or Rego Park, which aren't bad places but you can be sure your land won't depericiate in FH. We have the express bus and the express train to Manhattan. The commute sucks sometimes but you can whip out your lap top and study on the express bus. It costs around 42 dollars a week but it is cheaper than a car. Another place you might want to check out would be Williamsburg in Brooklyn. 25 minute commute but the area is still "up and coming". Not sure about prices.
