Off the Waitlist c/o 2013

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
I thought I already knew but now I'm wavering. I love the problem-based learning curriculum.

I think I've only told you congrats twice about Georgia. Let me say one more time, congratulations! I was very excited for you! :soexcited:
O WOW Justcats, whatcha gonna

do now?

Hey jm1! Congratulations! I'm new to this blog and am also on the waitlist for U of Minnesota c/o 2013 (I'm a MN resident ). My letter said that I was 4/25. Were you 8th on the combined list or did you find out later that you were 8th on a separate oos list?

Maddsmoltz, I am pretty sure that there are two separate lists, and i was on the out of state list. I believe there are people on the forum who are on the is list and havent heard. I think they just started calling, if you look at the minnesota thread, i explained how i found out!
Good luck, I hope you get in!

congrats!!! now I have to stalk my phone x2...

Optimistic, are you going to keep holding out?

I chose Davis so another spot has opened up on the Cornell alternate list.

Good luck!:luck:

the michigan state wait list is moving.. i just got a call!

AH right when I saw your post I checked my phone and had a new voicemail! However, it was just my friend 😡 Ironically, he was randomly asking me what the vet degree was called (haha).

Has on the University of Minnesota in state wait list hear anything yet?

Totally unexpected.....I'm off the Michigan waitlist 😱 (international student).

I don't have any experience with applying internationally, but I assume it's quite a feat to have made it. Congrats on Michigan!

Can't believe it finally happened!!

Don't blast me but I have a sincere question for others that have been accepted off of the waitlist.

Do you have reservations about telling your fellow classmates that you were accepted off of the waitlist? I am really proud of myself for making it into CSU but I am afraid that people will think differently of me. Vet students can be really competitive and I fear they will be judgmental or somehow think they are better than me. Does anyone else feel like this?

I know what you are talking about, but honestly, it doesn't matter how you got your seat because you are just as deserving. The first few days of classes everyone might be comparing notes and resumes, but come that first test, it's all a fresh start, so how you got there doesn't matter.

One of the greatest vets I have ever worked with was accepted off the waitlist, and i think no less of her because of it, neither did her classmates past the first few days. And you probably won't be the only one.

Good luck at CSU! if you find a few people like that, then just find a different crowd.

I've been telling everyone that since I was pulled off the wait list and I know I was the last person selected for the class, I will know this September that I was the person in the class they least wanted. 🙂 I have enough confidence in myself that I actually get a chuckle out of that.

What made me realize how crazy and sometime illogical the process is was a girl who posted a while back about getting accepted to her IS one year and then really wanting to defer (I think it was to get a masters first, but STILL go vet med), but since she couldn't at the school, she figured she'd apply again and with another degree and otherwise the same credentials, of COURSE she'd get in (I find that logical, personally). She did that and was rejected (not even waitlisted, from what I remember) which made NO SENSE if it is based on credentials and abilities. She should have been a shoe-in with another degree on top of what she had the first time.

Sometimes I think the waitlist is random and I really don't think it is any less incredible that people got in that way than people who got in right away.

I really think that a person with a better pre-vet advisor or an eLOR writer who is a more convincing speaker could make the difference between acceptance and straight rejection - even if it was the same person - so I don't see the waitlist as a big deal at all.

I'm obviously not on any waitlists, but personally this is the sort of thing that ends up kind of motivating me and pushing me harder, if that makes any sense. The best way to get me to do something is to tell me that I can't for some reason. I think it's related to that. If I feel like I'm at the bottom, I'll work that much harder. I dunno, I'm an odd one.

I applied to CSU OOS and was rejected. I think the way you should look at your "off the waitlist" acceptance is like this.....out of over 1800 applicants they maybe accepted 25 or so (not sure of exact number) and you were maybe #26 or 27? Don't think there would be too many people that would look down on your acceptance with those odds! Be proud of your accomplishment and don't worry about what other people might think!
You are going to be a VET..that's all that matters!😀

RE: this entire conversation, you guys should really read "If Wishes Were Horses" (I know, ridiculously corny title... wait till you see the picture on the cover too 🙄) by Loretta Gage, DVM... especially you TSUJC! I'm about 3/4 done with it now so I can't speak for the ending, but it's a true account of Dr. Gage's experiences, applying to CSU as a non-trad in her 30's, getting pulled from the waitlist after applying more than once, and it details her experiences year by year. Honestly, I'd recommend it to anyone about to start vet school... it's a nice insiders look at some of the stuff we can expect (though it was a different world in 1985), and I get really excited and slightly terrified reading about what I'm in for lol. Anyway, great book, total confidence booster... it shows that people from all walks of life can succeed as a DVM (or VMD!!), and she also nicely illustrates the evolution we're all about to go through, from know-nothings to doctors 😀😍:highfive::clap::biglove::soexcited: (Sorry, can't find the dancing banana... so I overcompensated 😀)

This is why I love this forum. You guys are so wonderful, I don't know why I was stressing. I am usually not bothered by what other people think of me but for some stupid reason this issue was in the back of my mind. Getting into CSU out-of-state is a BIG accomplishment and I should be congratulating myself rather than worrying about what other people think. Big thanks to all of you for your kind words and great advice. 🙂

At first (after the initial excitement wore off), I was feeling a little suck-a-licious about being the person they accepted only after everyone else told them "no" (I know I wasn't at the top of the waitlist). But the way I figure, the main reason I got waitlisted in the first place was because interviews turn me into a mumbling, incoherent wreck - not because I lack the abilities needed to succeed in school. So now I have my chance to prove to them (or maybe just myself) that the person they saw in my interview is not the real me.

Read that book before I started... loved it! Made me nervous and excited at the same time at the thought of playing with bones at home! Ha. Although at my school we don't get an individual set of bones... 🙁 Still a great read for insight into the journey into and through vet school.

I'm about 3/4 done with it now so I can't speak for the ending...

Lol. Everyone doesn't die, no one falls in love, there are no explosions... haha. No big surprises, it just wraps things up nicely. More or less what you'd expect. I agree that it's intimidating and interesting at the same time, and a reccommended read for anyone considering the field.

Oh, and I'd be stoked to get in off a waitlist, because that's better than NOT getting in off the waitlist... not getting in at all. Once that first day comes and goes, it's a level playing field. The top student might not stay that way, and the waitlisters might kick everyone's butts. 🙂

What's the difference from being pulled off the waitlist, or being rejected 2 or 3 times before you acutally make it in??? I would think nothing. there's plenty of people oin your class that did NOT get in on their first try either. I wouldn't worry about it all all.

Plently of us are qualified, there's just too many good applicants and not enough seats. You my friend are just as worthy. CONGRATS!!!!

I wouldn't feel like you were the school's "last choice" if you were accepted off the waitlist. I think you are as qualified as people who were accepted right off the bat. To me, the waitlist means "we want to take you, but there aren't enough seats". I can't imagine anyone would think "Oh, so and so was the last person to be accepted into the class". Just go with your head held high and good luck! Everyone will have butterflies...I know I'm nervous about moving across the country and leaving my boyfriend behind so that he can finish his PhD. But the way I see it, it has to work out!

Another thing to think about is that a lot of schools put effort into their class environment - what types of personality balance they have, what hobbies, etc. - to try and get a well-rounded bunch of people. So getting put on a waitlist isn't necessarily saying 'you're not our first choice person' so much as 'our first choice class would have these people, even though we've got so many awesome folks ready to step in if needed'. Plus, waitlists are waitlists for a reason - they wouldn't have put you on it if they didn't think you were as qualified and able to take it, you wouldn't have been on the waitlist if that were the case.

Oh my! I can't believe ISU is past #61 already! I am a tick over the 100 mark.....everyone please cross your fingers for me!

Congrats to all who have made it so far!

Yup.. and I will be declining the 61st spot so good luck! Have you emailed brenda lately.. she would be more than happy to let you know how many people are in front of you (a lot of people have declined their spots on the waitlist before it even started moving... I know I was bumped up 7 spots by the first week in april)

Get your butt to St. Paul. We need more fuzzy critters there! 😛

Just remember how friendly everyone was there. Plus we need more people on the final decision list. MN is looking kind of sparse.

So, Doc, does this mean we aren't going to be classmates?

Hey twelvetigers -I just realized you aren't on the final decision list...so, where is it? Which school is the lucky one?
