Off Topic: Let it Snow!

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
Just about the time all of the icky mud dries up, it rains again here. Can't wait for the rainy season to leave, and I LOVE the heat. Even the 130 that it gets to here doesn't bother me. I can't wait to be back in the south again. Of course I have been lucky enough to have a pretty mild winter here. It has only gotten to 40 once (which is enough for me)!

Does anyone know of any converted winter-haters in Ithaca? People keep razzing me about how cold it's going to be, and it has started to actually worry me. I think my dislike of the winter is at least partially because I've never dressed properly, so I am grumpy and cold. I'm looking into socially acceptable ski masks.

YES!!!! LET IT SNOW!!!

While it's been raining for a week straight here in Davis - my favorite ski mountain in Tahoe has gotten over 7 feet of snow and is expecting more!

Guess where I'm going tomorrow?!?! 😉

I love rural central NY and I love snow! Although, I did not always appreciate the weather until I learned to dress for it.
Layers and staying dry are essential for enjoying cold weather. A really warm hat is often overlooked. Try looking for or making (it is pretty simple) a double layer fleece hat. Of course there are the other basics: scarf, warm water proof gloves, undershirts, and wearing layers. This may sound and look silly (then again, no one will see it anyways) but invest in long underwear pants (tights, leggings, or anything of the sort) and tuck the bottoms into your socks. I should also note that boots are nice, but I have lived in snowy territory all my life and still do not own snow boots. Wool-equivalent socks, Combat boots, and gators have been just fine.
Good luck!
Oh and a sled (or tray) is also a necessity!

Figure I would see how the SDNers in California are doing with this winter storm. I left Flagstaff to get out of the snow (supposed to get up to five feet of snow). NAU campus was closed today and tomorrow due to the snow which is supposed to be continuous until Saturday. The entire state of Arizona is in some form of weather alert (blizzard, flood, wind, even a tornado warning was issued at one point). It is predicted that there will be 7 inches of rain in the Phoenix-area; which is nothing compared to most places but since the yearly average of rain here is 3 inches; that is double what we are used to. Flash flooding is also a major concern here; the creek near my house is normally empty but today it is completely filled and about to overflow. So, how are the rest of you doing with weather? Anything crazy going on anywhere else? I know CA is getting all of this weather before us so how is the weather treating you? I am so glad to see the desert here getting all of this rain; it is much needed and a great break from the sun! Hope everyone else is staying safe, dry and warm. 🙂

ETA: Tornado actually touced down at a mall here in the valley. Hope everyone else is staying safe!!

DUDE!! What mall?! It literally never stopped raining here yesterday and I was in Mesa, Tempe and Phoenix by the airport at various points in the day... I almost got knocked over by the wind on several occasions! My brother lives up in Sedona and he said there was some flooding by his work near Oak Creek and he had to leave his car there. This is crazy stuff for us silly Arizonans!

Lol!! Yes it is. It was at the Desert Ridge Mall..although they are claiming now that the tornado never actually touched down...who knows? The meterologists freak out around here when it starts to sprinkle..so I bet they were having a blast last night watching all of the radar systems. 🙂

Whew... as long as my beloved Scottsdale Fashion Square was untouched I'll be okay! LOL. Also I took a picture recently that I meant to put up on here of cacti with snow around them! It's on my mom's camera and she took it to work but I'll put it up later because I find snow in the desert soooo amusing! 😀

BUMPP

so we just got about 30 inches of snow on saturday and tonight we're supposed to get 15-20inches. and the government is off for the THIRD day in a row!!! WOOOHOOO!!! its a shame ive wasted 2 full days waiting around for penn's phone call but tomorrow i will take advantage and whip out the ol' camcorder while i play in the snow!

I'm sooooooooooooo over this winter. So over it. I'm a converted winter hater. I am now convinced that I will be moving someplace warmer and dryer for internships and residencies. DONE with the snow!! It just keeps effing coming.

Tonight, driving home, I made it to the road to my house which is a one lane road. I get 90% of the way up it and start to slide. So I back up, and start creeping up again. DILLHOLE at the top of the road decides he HAS to back his car out RIGHTNOW. So I'm stuck, waiting for him to figure out wtf he's doing...which I'm thinking "Um, where does he expect me to go?"

I finally decide to try and back down our nice long road (which is a hill, did I mention that?) to allow him the opportunity to back out. Almost get stuck, get myself out, and get probably 70% of the way down the road when a truck pulls up behind me. And doesn't move. I lean out my window to shout my intentions, and he basically just parks it behind me. So now I have to try and go back UP the hill... Ended with me just burying myself in someone else's driveway. I was PISSED OFF at both people. Stupid boys.

tobysgirl- man thats awful! there are a bunch of jerks on the street. the roads around here change from 2 to 1 lane depending on how well the plows did their job. of course there are always the big SUVs that speed up really fast on the icy roads just to make sure they get ahead of you while the lanes are shrinking. i almost had a heart attack on monday, ive banished myself to my apartment since.

Its just annoying. I'll be stuck likely through tomorrow now... I just wish people used their brains a little more about driving in the snow!

I enjoy SOME snow. The type we normally get which melts in 24 hours and is less then 3 inches deep. This several storms of 10+ inches is just killing me!

I nearly creamed two LOLs (little old ladies) this afternoon at 5 mph (separate occasions). They were both walking in the middle of the street in our neighborhood, which does not even have sidewalks in some places and is generally plowed to 1.5 car widths. Fair enough -- I can understand not wanting to wade through 2+ feet of snow for your whole trip. But MOVE OUT OF THE WAY! Both LOLs were walking towards me (and could see me; it was light but not bright and sunny), and neither looked feeble or unsteady. They must have seen my car but they kept walking in the middle of the street. I guess they were waiting for me to magically leap over them with my car, or maybe just careen into the ditch so that they could continue their walks uninterrupted (did I mention that this was nowhere near any kind of commercial district, so this flirting with vehicular suicide was purely recreational?). I kept slowing down and waiting for them to move to the side or step into someone's driveway, but I had to practically stop to avoid hitting them before they finally meandered out of the way.

There were some super-brilliant drivers, too, but none who seemed quite so eager to qualify for the Darwin Awards.

Now that I have everything I need, let it snow! Yes, I'm still 12. In so many ways.

this is why we want to be vets.

Boston's expecting snow tonight and all day tomorrow. Bad karma was coming after everyone up north was laughing at DC for getting dumped on 🙁

It's actually a term I picked up from some emergency medicine blogs. Common complaint in the ED: LOLFDGB (little old lady, fall down go boom). A lot of EM people seem to have a twisted sense of humor like me. 😀

I don't know, kootz, I also saw a brain donor walking her dog and talking on a cell phone who kept wandering out in to the right lane of a busy road (Rte 1 just south of campus). We still have to deal with owners.

It has started AGAIN with the snow here near D.C. We were supposed to be done this afternoon. This current storm is producing the ultimate in conflicted emotions in me. I LOVE snow, but I'm really worried about my flight to Minnesota on Friday. I already emailed them and they replied that they would be happy to work with me if my flight is cancelled, so at least I don't have to worry about missing my chance entirely, but I'm still on edge.

I'm seriously sick of winter, too. Not only is the weather nasty in general, but I'm REALLY ready to start riding my motorcycle again. Definitely looking forward to moving south, whether I get into vet school or not!

The south hasn't exactly been warm this winter, either. its been consistently below freezing with snow and wintry mixes here in Knoxville which is uncharacteristic, though not as bad as the north. I'm with you on the being sick of winter.
