Hi all,

I had 0 allopathic acceptances and was waitlisted at 4 schools. I was pulled off 1 waitlist last week and while I am thrilled, it was also my 4th choice among the 4 waitlists I had.

I heard that I can now use this acceptance as a bargaining tool. Is that true? Has anyone ever done that? I dont mean that I will give some kind of ultimatum but rather let the admissions committees know that I have an acceptance but am still waiting from them.

On the flip side, I heard that when you have been pulled off a list, the other waitlist schools tend to back off because they except you to commit to that 1 school. Is this true? Are my chances to be accepted to these other schools reduced because I have now been pulled off 1 list?

Thanks.

No, I do not think that is true. I was on 6 MD waitlists and was pulled off of 4 of them just in the last week and half! I'm very excited!

Which waitlist were you pulled off? Some schools may have different policies.

I think that your acceptance can be used as a bargaining tool, in the sense that if you were to write a letter of intent to one of your other schools, and state "i have been accepted to X medical school, but my desire to attend Y medical school is so strong that I would withdraw my acceptance from X if were accepted at Y" This will demonstrate a little stronger that you want to go to Y when you are compared to another applicant who writes a letter who has no acceptances and is desparate to get in to any school they can. I wrote a letter like this a few months ago and it worked for me, not sure about how much that had to do with it, but i think it showed that i really wanted to go to the waitlist school. Did you get a feel at any of the other schools if they seemed to be very committed to accepting people who really wanted to be there (georgetown comes to mind) or did it seem like they just take who ever looks good?

Congrads! I think that now that you have an acceptance you are in a whole new position. You are no longer some desperate person who just wants to get into medical school, rather to the admissions commitee you are someone who is already in but really likes another school, which can be a big plus in your favor.

in any case, i am also in your shoes..I have one acceptance but am waitlisted at 2 other schools that I like better.

good luck!

at this point in the process, each medical school can see where all applicants are holding a seat. they have access to this information, since they have to notify your current medical school if they want to take you from the waitlist. it's a professional courtesy.

i wouldnt be surprised if schools look to see where (if anywhere) their waitlisted candidates are heading before making an offer. it gives them a chance to shop around and see which AdComs their candidates have cleared.

so about mentioning it in a letter, that's a tough call, bc if they really wanted to know, i'm sure they could have the info in a matter of seconds through their computers.
