Thanks, hrfan! You know, I'm not sure. For comparison, we could take a look through the Official 2007 Waitlist Movement Thread and see how big it was this time last year. Then again, it could simply be that there are more applicants on SDN this year than last reporting their waitlist acceptances, so there's really no way to know unless people with specific school information chime in.

For example, I know that this year 21 people got off the Mayo waitlist, last year it was 15, and the year before that about 10-11. Some of the increase is likely due to the fact that they added 8 MD spots to the class this year, and they did say that the applicant pool was really incredible this year, and that they anticipated more withdrawals and waitlist openings because they accepted more superstar applicants than in past years.

For other schools, it seems to be cyclical. One year a school may over accept, and thus the next year they under accept. Thus, I think last year there was no Tulane waitlist movement, so this year they gave out acceptances more stringently so as to create more waitlist movement later on. I've heard the same thing about MCW, and other schools.

But yeah, this is THE best thread on SDN. It gives me the warm fuzzies. :D

Well so far MCW is having a repeat of last year: no movement whatsoever! I really hope that list starts moving, so I can really put the financial screws to my #1.

MCW truly has not accepted anyone off of their waitlist yet. I am hoping and crossing my fingers for some movement. I am afraid this is going to be a repeat of last year for them...from what I heard, there was no waitlist movement last year.

Dear Waitlisters,

I just wanted to wish you guys the best of luck. As someone who has been on a total of 10 WL, two application cycles, written letter after letter, met with dean after dean - I feel your pain. I got in at one place - June 20 2006.

Don't give up. If you're good enough to knock at their door, then you're good enough for them to let you in, you just need that extra boost. It only takes one school. Don't stop bugging them. Remember, you gotta go after something if you really want it, no one is going to hand it to you.

Yep, I decided to streak the lawn until they finally caved into my demands for an acceptance and full scholarship.

First off, I applied this year as a TX resident with a 31 MCAT and 4.0 gpa, originally planning to stay in state. However, at the last minute (October) I decided to submit my AMCAS without really expecting anything to come of it. Well, as I reported in a previous post, Dartmouth invited me to interview on their final interview date (March 20th). I knew immediately following my visit that DMS was my first choice, so as soon as I was waitlisted (3 days after the interview), I wrote a 1 1/2 page letter of intent to their office of admissions. Then, after graduation I sent a 1/2 page update letter that also reiterated my desire to attend DMS. I also sent in an additional LOR from a liberal arts professor around the same time as the update letter. Finally, on June 1st, after not hearing a word, I wrote the dean of admissions a short e-mail restating my commitment to their program. As I previously indicated, I was accepted 2 weeks later.

I know a lot of these tactics are well-known and have been expounded upon extensively, but you should never underestimate your chances. I have heard people say that you shouldn't overdue it with too much correspondence, but I think that as long as you have something meaningful to say, then say it regardless of how many pages or individual letters it takes to get your point across. Absolutely! :thumbup: My experience was similar. I sent a letter of interest with my secondary in October, a letter of interest post-interview in December, a letter of interest in early February before final decisions were made, and then a short two line email of intent in May and got into my dream school three weeks later. If I had to do it again, I'd have sent a letter of intent post-waitlist in March. But at the time I just felt like it would be a bit too much to keep sending letters like a love-sick pup. Oh, and I called about once a month, and sometimes once a week around waitlist time.... :oops:

So yeah, it hurts to feel like a rejected love-sick puppy, but miracles can happen, so tell them that you love them! :love:

[For those wondering what I wrote in my letters of interest, I had no updates to give, so I just talked about why I loved the school, why I'd be a great fit, and what I'd add to the class if they accepted me].

It sounds like you did all the right things. I was curious as to whom you addressed these love letters...I'm not sure who the right person would be. The director of admissions? The dean? The admissions committee?
 
Can schools find out if you've gotten into other schools? For example, does a UC know if you've gotten into another UC?

Actually, I just wrote "Dear Admissions Committee" and emailed them as attached one page letters (Word docs) to admissions. But in hindsight, now I'd probably address them to the dean of admissions (who wasn't there when I interviewed) via email instead. Probably better to put a name/personal touch on it. But apparently it didn't really matter either way.

I believe that schools that have accepted you can see where else you've been accepted on March 15th. There may also be some sort of informal communication among regional/local schools, but I think that's mainly speculation.

Thanks! I think I'll try that myself. My undergrad GPA might hold me back, so I need to make sure they know I'm motivated! :D

I'm sitting on the wait list, and I haven't heard of any movement. Anyone got info on this?
