I would really like to see people post potential interview questions here, as well as questions that are a good idea for us to ask on the interview. I actually lost my copy of APA's Getting In, which was an excellent resource for potential questions.

I found these questions in a document on Tulane's website (copied word for word from psych.tulane.edu/news/documents/INTERVIEWQUESTIONS.doc):

    Personal/Professional
    1. Tell me about yourself.
    2. How did you become interested in psychology? How did you become interested in (specific interest area)?
    3. What would you be doing if you were not in psychology?
    4. What are your personal strengths and weaknesses? What have you done to deal with your shortcomings?
    5. What are your goals after graduate school? In 5 years? 10 years?
    6. What do you have to contribute to us?
    7. Why should we accept you over other equally qualified candidates?
    8. What do you do in your spare time? To relax?
    9. Tell me about your interest in this area (geography)?
    10. Why did you choose this career path?

    Research
    1. What are your research interests? How did you get interested in this topic?
    2. Did you do an undergraduate honors thesis? Tell me about it.
    3. What is the clinical relevance of your research?

    Assessment
    1. Tell me about an assessment instrument with which you feel competent.
    2. Opinion of projective testing (e.g., Rorschach)
    3. Opinion of objective testing (e.g., MMPI-2)
    4. What further assessment training or experiences do you want/need?

    Therapy
    1. What do you think would be your greatest strength as a therapist?
    2. What about clinical work do you enjoy most/least?
    3. What is your theoretical orientation? What do you think of _____ approach?
    4. What are the challenges you expect to face as a therapist?
    5. What is your experience with individual/couples/family/group/inpatient/etc. treatment?
    6. What are your clinical interest areas?

    Diversity
    1. With what multicultural or diverse populations have you worked?
    2. What are your strengths and weaknesses in working with minorities?
    3. What variables/issues are of concern to you in working with specific populations?
    4. What reading/didactic experiences influence the way you think about diverse populations?

    Recruiting/ Interest & Fit
    1. Why are you interested in our program? Why are you applying to this particular program?
    2. How do you see our program fitting with your career goals?
    3. Why do you think you are a "fit" for our program?
    4. Which of your interest areas are (not) addressed by our program?
    5. With which faculty member would you most like to work?
    6. What are the advantages to you of this program?
    7. What worries you about coming to this program?
    8. What might you not get at this program that you want?
    9. What are your feelings about coming to this state?
    10. What do you think of the program now that you've heard more about it?

    Other
    1. What else would you like me to know about you that isn't apparent from your CV?
    2. What is the #1 question you would like me to ask you?

I've always wondered how to answer the "What would you be doing if you weren't in psych?" question. I mean, I have other careers I've thought about, but I'm afraid if I get too detailed it will seem that I'd rather be doing that instead.

I received an interview invitation today from Sam Houston State University's Clinical Program (Forensic emphasis). They are holding interviews over the weekend of Feb. 20th - 22nd. I was contacted over the phone from a professor in charge of issuing invitations. I'm so excited!!!

Re: the clinical questions. I applied to more research oriented schools, but I wasn't asked a single question related to clinical work. In any of my interviews, even at schools that were more of a mix, say a 5 on the Insider's Guide scale. If you are trying to figure out what to focus on, I would recommend research, particularly for those of you applying to programs with a heavy focus on research (but also probably good for mixed programs). Be able to talk about what you've done (what were you research questions? How did you go about designing your study? What did you find? How did you rule out alternatives? How do you think you could take it further), and what you are interested in doing in grad school (What specific questions are you interested in? In what populations? What areas do you think need more work?). If you can demonstrate that you are able to synthesize the literature, identify problems or weaknesses in past work, and then come up with (feasible) ways to address them, you're golden.

I think that's great advice, and was actually surprised that this list had so many clinical questions! Hopefully the fact that I'm defending my thesis a week or so before calls are expected to start coming in will prepare me for those very questions!

I'm surprised that you've already been contacted by a school for interviews! When was the application deadline? It seems like the schools are still just organizing the application materials at this point. When do you think we should expect to hear back? I was figuring sometime in January for February interviews??

The deadline was December 1st, so they must really be on the ball. Also, the professor said they were contacting applicants this early so they could find affordable flights, which seems rather thoughtful. However, I think it is rare to hear from schools this early in general.

As a former manager of the interview list (2 years ago) I wish you all the luck. It is a lot more stress and work than you think, but completely worth it in the end. I only know for the last two years, but for the last two years the manager of the list has gotten into one of their top choices. I wish you the very best of luck!

The waiting is pretty nice if you think about it. Just think - all of those applications, letters, personal statements, etc. are someone elses workpile now! kick back and enjoy the holidays!

Calm down. No hurling allowed on this Thread!:barf: There is no janitorial staff to clean up. In addition, people need to keep their suits and shoes clean for their interviews.

Here I was thinking that it was a tad too early for interview invitations...

Just received an email from Admissions for the first round of interviews at the Chicago School of Professional Psychology for the Clinical Psychology Psy.D. Program taking place on either January 26th, February 2nd, or February 9th.

    Good luck everyone! :luck:

Must be nice to know so early that you have a shot at at least one school... although if you got an invitation this early I'm sure you'll be getting at least a few others  Congrats!

Me too CaraSusanna, but then I just think, well, there's nothing I can do about it! All we can do is wait :)

I also keep in mind that there's always next year- that much more time to improve my application!

Hi Everyone, I heard from my POI by email about my interview at Florida State on 2/6-2/8. It is early, so I wouldn't expect all the FSU POI's to have sent their emails by now. Good luck!!

So I just got my second interview invite (and am knocking on wood so I don't jinx the possibility of getting more)! I heard from the administrative assistant for UC Santa Barbara's Combined Psych PhD via e-mail on 12/19. Interviews are being held on Jan. 23rd and 24th. Happy holidays!!!

Just found out I have a preliminary phone interview from Kansas (clinical PhD, health track) in 9 days. I was definitely not expecting this - an initial interview used to determine who they invite for the in-person, day long interview. Seems a little much?

Is this common - the preliminary interview? Not sure what to expect from it. With work, holiday travel, and other applications still due, I have next to no time to prepare for this.

    How did you find out?
Was it KU or Kansas State, and who'd you apply to work it?

I applied there too and now I'm nervous!!

But I have never heard of a preliminary phone interview

Don't be anxious guys, they are coming, I'm lucky b/c I'm not really playing the waiting game. I didn't apply anywhere that I wasn't already in touch w/people... but I played it last time I applied and it sucked. My heart's warmest wishes go out to you. Trust me, there was a point where I was hitting refresh on my inbox like every 15 minutes for 4 days... ha... and then, my first interview invite was a phone call and not even an email... so all that refreshing had been for nothing.

Good luck and enjoy your holidays.

It depends on the school. I remember when I interviewed at the University of Tulsa a couple of years ago, half of my interview group (15 out of 30 or so) were interviewing for the 2 professors who did PTSD research. However, other schools may have only a couple of people who are interested...so it varies. It is sometimes hard to tell since people sometimes have multiple professors in mind for a PoI...but I would guess the average is about 4-5 or so. What do the rest of you think?

I had great contact with at least half of my POIs (and your average contact with the others), but I'm still playing the waiting game! I have applied before and know that you can never be too sure of yourself, even if you've met your POI in person and been around them for an extensive amount of time. I would guess that most people feel like I do... we're just anxious to have this finished and decided. And yay! It will be finished soon!

Unless you've met them in person, I'm not sure how anyone's had any more contact response than, "Thanks for you interest in my research. You look to be a great candidate. I will keep a look out for your application."
    ?
All profs I know or have contacted are way too busy for much more than that.

I didn't have any of those, though I did have one school schedule an interview for the next day, with a faculty member I hadn't applied to work with. I didn't really know her work, so I had to prep pretty quickly. I remember reading somewhere (Insider's Guide), that you shouldn't take a surprise interview. Just explain that you can't talk right now (Dr's appt, test, etc.), and offer some times that week. Then you can prepare thoroughly.

That being said, I don't know of anyone who had a surprise interview.
I think with cell phones, it's probably hard to catch someone at a good place (without loud background noise) when they have a lot of free time (as opposed to people answering a phone before class starts).

Don't worry too much about that!

Yep, I agree! And I have! I met a lot of them through my current advisor at a national conference (and even drank with one, though moderately of course). It was a great opportunity.

And when I say moderately, I mean I had a glass of wine. Which is not even moderately. But whatever, it sounds so cool I just can't resist. ;)

You're re]ight. I think it even depends on the professor. One of my interviews last year was only for about 20 people so I was thought it was pretty good odds, since they usually have 6 to 9 spots. Well, when I got there I found out that at least 6 people were there for the same professor I was interested in. Some professors had 1, others 2 candidates. Mine had 6 or 7. So it reallly depends.
