Hello everyone. I am a second year who will write the exam in June 2011. Meanwhile let this be a good thread where everyone share their study progress and recent trend of the exam.

its over 5 and still no sign of score. do they keep scor reporting until late in evening??

Haha, I noted the same in my post-test post. Had a perfect set up for HCM, I marked a HCM murmur and put off listening to the audio until last to avoid switching twice between headphones and earplugs. Imagine my surprise when it was NOT a HCM murmur. 🙂

HCM murmur??? I thought they would only give you murmurs that are very clear/easy to identify. HCM murmur would sound like AS and would need DD by doing manevours etc....
I mean - do we need to learn ALL the murmurs and their differentials?

The National Board has issued a message stating that most score reporting of Step 1 results occurs within four weeks of testing. However, because of necessary modifications to the test item pool, there will be a delay in reporting for some examinees testing beginning in mid-May 2011. The target date for reporting Step 1 scores for most examinees testing from May 17 through late June will be Wednesday, July 13, 2011.

What's up. Just took the test a couple of days ago...just wanted to give you guys my opinion on the test since this website has helped me so much. First of all let me give you my practice test scores. I don't remember exactly but here goes:
Usmleworld: average=75% (percentile=83rd); lowest score=60% (first one); highest score=86%; last 10 random blocks=84%; completed=86%; all random blocks (except for a few biochem/micro/neuro/pharm right before the exam to help with my weak topics)

World exam 1/2: >250....cant remember the exact score (4/3 weeks before the test respectively)

NMBE 7: 247 (2 weeks before the test)

free 150: 97% (2 days before the test)

School predicted score (based off of MCAT, practice NBME and medical school grades)=242

I used mostly First Aid and Usmleworld. I also supplemented Goljan rapid review path in stuff I felt weak in. We only had 4 weeks of true step 1 studying bc our classes ended March 28th and we had to have sat for step 1 by the time we started 3rd year, which was today.

Anyway, I thought the best prep for step one was 1st and 2nd year classes. I know that is cliche and what all our advisors tell us but it is true.

Also, if I could do it over again, I would only use first aid and usmle world. At the beginning I felt like I tried to use to many resources and memorize every minute detail and I feel like that slowed me down a little. I would also heavily recommend a quick anatomy review text. First aid/usmleworld is definitely not enough and I felt like I had ALOT of anatomy...and I was pretty much relying on what I learned in medical school. Also had a lot of weird biostats and ethics.

I also had at least three of the EXACT same questions that were on NBME 7 or the free 150...cant remember which one guys sorry.

The test was what I expected I guess. Definitely harder than all of my prep tests. In order of accuracy I would have to say free 150<world exam 2< world exam 1<nbme 7<usmleworld. A lot of random questions that I never saw in first aid or usmleworld and I couldn't believe they actually asked. But there were also a lot of questions that were so simple I couldn't believe they were on the exam.

Overall I have no idea how I did on the exam. I definitely did not feel as confident as I wanted to walking out. With that said, I know I busted my ass for 7 weeks and I couldn't have tried any harder. If I had studied for 7 more weeks it wouldn't have helped me with some of the questions on the exam. Ill let you guys know when I get my score back. Good luck to all of you that are about to take the exam. Keep working hard...work as hard as you can bc you dont want to have any regrets. It's an awesome feeling when youre done. If you have any questions I would be glad to help.

What up youngbloods. Got my score back today. >240 <250. Very happy with my score considering I thought the exam hit on all my weaknesses. My test was HEAVY on physiology, anatomy, behavioral sciences, bioethics. Not very much biochem, micro, pharm, or path (which are my strengths). Good luck to everyone.

Congrads to the latest great scores and patience to those still waiting! 🙂

I have a question not directly related to the test but related to your prep, with the wisdom of the test behind you. Which mode do you think is most beneficial to use UWorld in? Timed test mode or timed or untimed tutor mode?

I did ask this as a stand alone question thread, but it's got very few answers and realize that folks on this thread might have a different perspective with the benefit of hindsight. Thanks!

another god.

Did your score seem to correlate with your practice scores well?

God has been very kind indeed.

UW 80% first go, random, timed. Finished a week before the test

NBME 7 700/256 after UW.

Worked on weaknesses from FA after that in the hope of hitting 260. Very happy with this also.

So what is the purpose of the free 150? 3 days until examtime and figuring out how to best maximize my score. Does it come w answers and explanations? Will there be repeats o the real deal? Already taken like 5 NBMEs. So I feel like I know where I stand... Not looking for a score predictor.

It comes with answers, no explanations. I'm not sure if there were any repeats. But they're representative of the easier questions on the exam so I think they're worth doing.

Hey Arc, in reference to Behavioral Ethics... do you think reading those 1 or 2 chapters in BRS/KAPLAN is worth the time then? Was first aid enough for the rest of the behavioral section of your exam?

and congrats on being done - I have no doubt you killed it.

Haha thanks. I wish I had more confidence that I killed it to be honest, but I appreciate the sentiment.

Our school had a form which was given to us by our behavioral science prof (a huge authority in the field... you prob know who I'm talking about) regarding those questions and it was more or less on the money. However there was one question I was stuck on on the exam, it wasn't a huge deal but I feel like it's a simple kind of question to at least TRY and not get wrong.

Yup. It annoys me to no end because I'm not going to find out my scores until after my first rotation. Ugh.

took it yesterday.. thought it went horribly.. definitely had a few breakdowns during my breaks in the bathroom..
my biggest regrets (granted they may mean nothing bc i will have to wait until july 13 for my score): reading RR isnt that necessary... i wish instead of reading most of RR, i would have done more UWorld (only got through 45ish% of it) and read first aid a 3rd time.. or maybe a 4th time..
I read FA 2x, 2nd time during the 4 days before my exam. read all of RR except the 5 heme chapters which i read during the last few weeks of school in mid april and the kidney chp and half of chp 4.. i just couldnt bring myself to do it..
i also read all of CMMRS which i dont know if that was worth it either..
first aid is key.. there were definitely questions where i thought "damn.. if i read FA another time, i would probably have remembered this detail."
also quite a few WTF? questions.. either mentioning something i didnt even know what the hell it was or just weird questions about stuff i knew about but not the specific thing they were talking about.
also thought the 3-4 heart sounds i had were ridiculously hard.. maybe i just suck at heart sounds. im definitely not doing cardio..
NBME 11 and 12 were each 221.. took them a week apart. but in between those 2, i took the free 150 and 88% on that hwich medfriends put at 255 +/- 11.. but it felt really easy so that was probably ridiculously overinflated.
i thought NBME 12 was a ridiculous test and would not want anyone to take that right before their exam. really hard, really strange questions IMO.
im glad to be done.. i wish i couldve studied for another week or 2.. only had 4 weeks due to personal and family reasons.. i would be happy breaking 225.. if i break 235 i will be so happy that i cant even begin ot express it..
but now i wait til july 13..

have faith. you never know what the score will turn out to be. just be glad you are done.

So I posted my experience a while back, here's my official score to give my post some credibility in terms of what you need to study to do well....

247/99

good luck everyone!

Yeah dude, I'm sure you did way better than you think you did - look the bright side, it's over! Go celebrate/have a drink!

Congratulations! It's over! Stop worrying about it...you studied hard and will probably end up doing better than you think 🙂

I'm sure you did FINE, it sounds like you studied most of the study material that'll give you a decent score. Thanks for posting your experience, esp after the test. How did that imodium work out for you?

Took it today. Definitely felt prepared for a lot, and there was definitely a lot that I had not seen during my studies (or during medical school at all, stupid ObGyn question).

While I feel like I rocked it, I know better and I am guess I am around a 225-230. 200 or 250, I did my best.

Congrats!

How would you describe the subject breakdown?

wondering if anyone who's taken it recently noticed the extra immuno or whatever... or was it just such a big test that everything was tested

More anatomy than I was expecting or could've prepared for.
A lot less pulm than I would expect.
More receptor questions than I anticipated
I could only pick out a few questions that might've been experimental.

I had about 6 immuno questions, and except for one which I brain farted on, they were straightforward. (e.g. which interleukin causes fever, what builds up in SCID)

All in all, not too bad. I had between 5 and 10 questions marked per block. I am just hoping that an 80% is NOT a 220 like it is for the NBME.

thanks so much for your feedback especially since you wrote today!!! how was the micro and pharm on the exam? was there anything completely out of left field?

Congrats on finishing! You are kind to give us feedback after your busy day.

for those who have written the exam.....how similar was it to NBME 11,12 and 7....i only did 11 and 12 and i have already purchased 7 last week but i didnt get a chance to do it yet....my exam in on monday is it wise to take it tomorrow? is 7 easier then nbme 11/12 or on the same level?

Pharm was reasonable, and I felt they were very fair. Micro too. Everything was in first aid, for micro and with the exception of balcofen everything was there for pharm. The hardest questions were the what goes up what goes down for GH and for Metabolic syndrome. A lot of the times, I knew the answer without even reading the stem because of the included image.

I went through First Aid 3 times (the most gain came during the second read through). I reviewed the high yield images and facts the day before.

I hit the wall after block 3 or 4, but I was able to finish every block with 5 to 10 minutes to spare because I would read the short questions and answer them immediately, I would read the medium questions and try to answer or skip, or I would just read the answers and the last part of a long of a question or skip. I'd clear 25 to 35 of the easy questions in 30 minutes and have the other questions to figure out during the other 30 minutes.

I took a bathroom break between each block.
Dang, 7 bathroom breaks? Lol, enjoy being done!

Don't worry buddy I'm sure you did fine! Congrats on being done!

i did not do the imodium lol. the pharmacy near me ran out! can you believe it? so i took ti as a sign to not do it..
i had breakfast and every single break i took a bathroom break, a few sips of wter and a snack.. my snack varied. i had a chocolate cake parfait, a bowl of fruit, a mini salad, and a chocolate/almond/caramel thing. i had 1 5hr energy after block 3 bc i hit the wall.
i thought the anatomy was ridic. you definitely need to supplement FA with some anatomy book...
i thought hte immuno wasnt too prominent. i didnt have straight forward questions but i think i remember maybe 4-7 immuno questions..
the pharm was ok.. it wouldve been better but i just cant f*cking remember the pharm!! i read the pharm stuff 3x in FA and i still sucked at it. ugh!!!!

Congrat on being done! My friend took it yesterday too and he felt the test was ridiculously hard. He did not think studying solely on first aid and uworld helped much either. Just wait until you get your score!

this is probably stupid, but can anyone recommend an anatomy atlas. i used rohen during anatomy (was easier for me) but I'm thinking some clinical one with drawings might be a wee bit better for getting the spatial relations down.

i'm sure everyone that took it faired well, you guys put the work in and that's all you can do. i know you can't drink 24/7, but go have a beer (or whatever you prefer) and relax and be a person for all of us stuck being fake people for the time being.

Not stupid at all. I'm inclined to agree - you don't need to spend hours and hours memorizing the spatial relationships but for things like, say, the pelvis/perineum, it can be VERY useful. It's an extremely confusing part of anatomy which relies a lot on spatial relationships (I got 3-4 question on prostate/genitourinary anatomy) and an atlas can greatly simplify it.

For those who took exam, are Goljans pictures worth going through? Are they high-yield. He always mentions this is the "best" picture for so and so and "they'll use this one". Is this correct? or are the images in FA good enough for a quick review?

I think your question is a good one since it seems that most people feel less prepared for anatomy than most other subjects.

I'm going to go through Little Robbins' blue boxes once for anatomy prep. It's all clinically relevant information and obviously there are drawings if you need to refresh on the surrounding anatomy.

I'm not being a nit-picker but I assume you mean Moore's? Can you link me that book...we used Grey's (which was ABSOLUTELY abysmal). I have gross map, which has clinical stuff but I'm going to need more than grey-scale color to actually care about anatomy haha.

ok just wasted 30 minutes on this:

http://www.googlebodybrowser.com/body.html

I have zero clue if it's even close to accurate. Cool though. Kind of buggy though.

I used this http://www.visiblebody.com/ during anatomy class in MS1...soo helpful and mostly accurate. Much better that using an atlas at times.... heres a demo http://www.visiblebody.com/tour_demos

They used to have a 1 month free trial which I used like 6 times with different email addresses...no more trial now. But its only like 15 bucks for 5 months if you're a student.

dude you just made my night. i'm definitely buying this, i cannot stand netter's. this + a HY book should be pretty solid. thanks a bunch!

no problem! yea i forgot about it until now... haha. Maybe Ill get it as well for a pelvic anatomy refresher.

His pictures are definitely worth going through, as are the FA pictures. The real thing has quite a few images, and I think all those images (and corresponding explanations) are high yield. Plus it's not a big time commitment.

2nd year just came to an end this past Thursday. Turning the studying up to full blast. The plan is to get through the rest of the Kaplan lecture videos (have about half left). Read first aid over and over again till my eyes fall out. And do a billion questions. I'm taking the test July 9th.

Any suggestions on how often to take a NBME, questions/day, or any other help??

I'll keep my progression posted as time goes on.

Id say nbme once a week is probably a good bet. as far as questions/day I would just take whatever qbank/s you are going to do and divide by 45 days.

NBMEs no more frequent than weekly, imo. You can't learn nearly as much from them as you can from doing UW, as their primary purpose is to serve as a diagnostic straight from the powers that be. Besides, gotta give yourself time to improve.

As far as Q/day, I'd say that's going to depend on you -- some people burn through them and don't read every.single.explanation in great depth if they feel like they could explain their rationale on the answer choices (me), some people read everything everywhere. It's really going to be up to you and how stringent you are in Qbank use. fwiw, I've been doing ~75-80 daily and a section of FA most days since early May. Sometimes hit Goljan later on.

One thought though: use UW's note feature to create a running list of notes on things you got wrong / know you'll forget / etc. You'll be able to print it later and read it wherever, and it's pretty damn high-yield since it's a collection of stuff you should see again since you missed it the first time or thought it was worth making a note about.

thanks for the suggestions. I'm definitely going to try to do a NBME once a week, maybe once in a week and half. I didn't even know that a note feature in uw existed!

Wait you can do that? I've been taking notes on the ones I've missed but is there a way to print out all of your notes at once without opening up each question individually?
