Hello everyone. I am a second year who will write the exam in June 2011. Meanwhile let this be a good thread where everyone share their study progress and recent trend of the exam.

I did 30 points better on USWA1 than on NBME 6 (two weeks of studying in between; took NMBE first). Many of my friends also did better on USWAs than on NBMEs; so it looks like your improving to me.

wow.. that was faster than my editing 🙂 ... thanks!!! I'm trying to tell myself that #6 was harder ... didn't know if I was in denial!:xf::luck:

- Random. Multiple questions on specific areas and complete organ systems almost entirely left out. Wasn't expecting that.

Are you basically saying here that there were "themes" in blocks? Sorry English is not my first language.

Congratulations on finishing.

Thanks iA! I hope so, but I truly have no clue...

Did anybody else who took it then find a handful of questions that they got wrong when they got home and looked up a few they had to guess on? Demoralizing!

Sheldor I started making a list of questions I got wrong and its sitting on my desktop. It is demoralizing, just try not to do it. I should probably take my own advice.

Sheldor. Congrats on finishing! So are you saying that you thought FA and UW were not enough for many of the questions you saw?

Can someone who's taken it explain to me how breaks work? I mean, when you're done with a section do you just click "I wanna break NOW" Or "End block" or something? Is there a timer that lets you know how much break time you've used/have left?

Thanks, sorry I'm a noob, I'm just trying to avoid taking the tutorial 😉

I want as much break time as I can get and stuffff 🙂

haha when you're done with a block, you have 30 seconds to click on "Go to Next Block" or "Take a Break". If you click on the break button, a timer will start counting down from your total time of 45 min. you're free to split up the breaks however you want. because i like to do 2 blocks at a time, i did:

2 blocks, 10 min break, 2 blocks, 25 min break, 2 blocks, 10 min, 1 block

i kinda skimped on that last one, though, because i just really wanted to get the whole thing over with haha. it's amazing what redbull and adrenaline can do

Thanks...wtf is up with NBME practice teststhough.....I finished my second block of nbme questions and wanted to go for a quick pee break so i pressed finish block or whatever and it automatically started the next one... I really had to go by the end of that haha.

Glad to know its not like that on the real thing haha.

Just took this today, man does it feel good to have that over. As far as how I feel, I feel completely confused actually, haha It felt both good, bad, easy and hard. This essentially means I have no idea how I did. I will with hold my study schedule for now because with out knowing how I did it will be quasi useless.

My seemingly random thoughts about the test:

- Random. Multiple questions on specific areas and complete organ systems almost entirely left out. Wasn't expecting that.

- It often felt as if the question writers have copies of First Aid and specifically make questions that are "just" beyond what is in the book. Like you'll recognize the topic, remember the page in FA, and know that the answer isn't on there, haha

- They really do love questions with arrows in the answer stems...

- Had a few repeats from the NBME's. I think mostly 11 and 12. They weren't exact repeats, but very, very close.

- I was FREAKING out about Gross Anatomy. I am so thankful that I didn't spend more time on this. There were definitely Gross questions on there, but a good portion of them you could get just by having attended medical school, and the rest were so random that you'd never have seen them even if you studied Gross for weeks.

- Everyone on these boards really pushes pelvis anatomy and CTs. I completely believe them, but I also had no CT's of the pelvis, and no pelvic anatomy to speak of in general.

- I guess the real point of the above post is that every test truly is different. So do your best to learn it all, and try not to focus in on anyone topic that you hear is important.

- Some questions were so easy that I'd mark them just to make sure I wasn't reading them wrong. Anybody else get these?

- While there were a bunch I didn't know and had to guess on, I am also fairly confident that no amount of studying would have prepared me for them.

I'm not sure if any of this helps those who are yet to take it. I will say this, it felt like a mix of difficulty between the NBME's and Uworld. Now that I think about it, the difficulty actually felt very, very similar to 11 and 12. There were some blocks that I'd finish and feel like a rock star, and others that I'd finish and truly have no clue how it went.

I'm not very good at waiting for things (thus the reason I already created a score countdown thread), so hopefully this next month will pass quickly. Hopefully it went well. For those of you who scored 240+ how'd you feel when you were done?

Good luck to those who are yet to take it. If the results are good I will happily share my study experience!

Haha congrats! At least you were more composed than me afterwards. I wouldn't be surprised if you had the same test form I had saturday, sounds a lot like it from your description. I think they bought the first aid back in january and made sure at least half of the questions would not could not be found in that book. I had fun with google trying to find correct answers that's for sure.

They say the people that score high usually leave feeling bad. I'm not going to rely on that, but it gives me hope that maybe I passed, anything beyond that will be a pleasant surprise

hahaha yeah especially since you can't leave once you've started a block.. that kinda scared me at first (what if i have to go pee?!) but i guess the adrenaline took care of that.. for the most part 😛

Took the test today. Overall, not too bad. But, I totally agree with what some of the posters above have said, and I'll reiterate, this test is RANDO. Lots of strange questions. I also constantly had the feeling during the test that they had First Aid in hand and intentionally wrote questions that went just a step beyond what was in that book, or else they'd have a question that set you up thinking you knew what they were going to ask you, then ask you something completely different. I have a feeling those test writers have to stay ahead of the game, though, in order to really test our knowledge, so they have to write this test in a way that doesn't allow you to ace it by just reading a review book over and over many times. I'd say about 10% of the test is hard-to-impossible, 70% is fair, and 20% is gimme questions. I took NBME 11, and that test I thought was pretty consistent as far as difficulty, i.e. all the questions were pretty much on the same difficulty level. On this test, I could tell some questions were designated as "easy" "medium" or "effing hard", and I think the way they do this test is that they have a gigantic question bank, and for each person, the computer just spits out x number of questions in each category.

I really don't think it's helpful to y'all to comment what exactly was on my test, or even what subjects were more representative, because a buddy of mine took this test today with me, too, and we were talking afterward, and it seemed like our tests were very different in terms of content. He felt like he had a ton of genetics and immunology questions, and I had a lot of anatomy and biostats and pharm. So, there really is no cookie cutter way to prepare, other than to have studied well for 2 years. And I have NO idea how I did, but what I am absolutely certain of, is that I could have studied for twice as long and I really don't think I would have gotten a different score. You simply cannot prepare for everything they could throw at you.

That being said, I left the test feeling pretty okay. I know I answered the majority of them correct, and other than that I have to simply wait like the rest and see how the chips fell. I studied for four weeks pretty intensely after school got out. Also, I studied from 7-3 yesterday, and now I wished I had just taken that day off and played a round of golf or something, it wouldn't have made a difference, now that I've taken it. I would definitely recommend an R&R day before, maybe go over formulas or LIGHT studying, but just relax the day before, cuz it's not gonna matter.

I did uworld once through, annotating that in my First Aid. I think Uworld prepares you well for the "multi-step" questions, though on my test at least, I don't think I had many questions that were riddles like on Uworld. But it's definitely good to get your mind thinking that way, because this test is a THINKING test, no doubt, so Uworld is good prep for practicing thinking in that way. I also listened to all the GOljan tapes, though First Aid has caught on, and I feel like everything he said in those boot leg tapes is now featured in FA, so Idk if it made a huge difference. I really can't recommend studying anything else besides FA, though. The test really isn't bad if you worked hard, so don't take me the wrong way. Just realize that you won't know everything on this test. Good luck to everyone taking it soon!

Oh and my buddy did DIT, and apparently the Developmental Milestones was a "Five star topic" (haha), so he memorized that chart in FA and then when we got to the test, he copied it on his laminated sheet. Neither of us had ANY questions on that. Ha DIT fail.

Congrats on being done man. How many bathroom breaks did you have to take? What type of liquid intake did you keep?

I drank a 5 hour energy when I got up, then a red bull after my 4th block. I took a pee break after the 2nd, 4th, and 5th blocks, I think. I ate half a sandwich with the red bull after the 4th block. I did use the 15 mins for the tutorial so I could calm down and mentally prepare for the test, and for me the 45 mins was a sufficient amt of break time. Actually I think I only used 35 mins of it. It just depends on how big your bladder is I guess.

Thanks! I have a very small bladder and a freaking spastic colon. Anytime I am anxious, bam...gotta run to the bathroom. I gotta be in the zone that day.

Don't worry about the bathroom experience, you won't have any issues. After doing so many Uworld blocks the 46 question blocks individually fly by very quickly. I finished each block 5-10 minutes early, took a TON of breaks and still had like 50 minutes of break time left when I was done! I was all worried about conserving it, but there was plenty.

I drank gatorade instead of water and that seemed to help with the bathroom issues. The only block that I actually realized that I had to go to the bathroom during was the one right after lunch when I had drank a bunch of my gatorade. So I did 2 blocks, break, 2 blocks, lunch, 1 block, bathroom break, and then 2 blocks. Its amazing how much endurance you build up while studying, such that 2 block intervals like that wasn't bad at all!

Isn't that true about the First Aid thing though? I kind of wish I had spent less time on First Aid and more time on other things. Once you know First Aid, and you know you know it, I think rather than continuing to hammer it it may be more beneficial to do more Q banks. I dunno, I'm still contemplating what I could have done differently, because many of the questions felt like an IQ test, more than a test of my knowledge.

Here's hoping that those who leave feeling bad score well! 👍

I heard him say that and then definitely did not hardcore memorize or write it down on my board. Then I had 2 questions on it!

That seems to be the way it happens with stuff. Whenever someone says something WILL be on an exam or you WILL see it then you spend lots of time and it never shows up. I KNOW the ONE thing I decide to gamble on by not knowing stone cold will have a couple of questions just to spite me.

I'm starting to feel like most of my studying now is just risk reduction and raising the floor for my performance more than raising the ceiling. Reflecting back on the these last 2 years as a whole, it is really kind of amazing where ALL of us are. Just thinking back to 2+ years ago when we were in premed classes and this point seemed like it was at the edge of the universe; (many of us) wondering whether we could even hack it to this point.

Personally, I used to have tremendous test anxiety and would go into exams telling myself, "Just don't fail. Don't mess up. Don't choke." Whereas, now I enter with the mindset, "I've studied my arse off for this and I am going to crush this thing." The nerves are still there but now they are more in line with all of my years in sports and music performance where I practiced SO much and SO hard that it is engraved in there and I know I have the tools to do what needs to be done at a consistently high level.

Oh, and congrats on finishing for everyone who is done with it. Go relax for a few days. Remember, Step 2 is only about a year away. 😛

Couple of questions: If you skip the tutorial the break time gets added right? Is there anything in the tutorial that's "must need to know"?

- If you finish a block early does the time get added to your break time?

Anyone else hoping for their scores tomorrow? I took mine may 16 so I think there is a slight chance I will get them? Also, does anyone know what time the score reports usually come out? If I have to wait until July I might actually kill someone!

im impressed with you all doing 2 blocks back to back. i decided to take a break after every single block, sort of like hitting refresh on my brain after every single block LOL.
every one of my breaks included a pee, a snack, and a few sips of water. i figured if i pee after every block then i shouldnt have to pee during a block lol

Hey ar2388,

How much time does that entire routine take? I'm talking about the entire time in between end of the block till you sitting back down (including finger-printing and all that).

I also plan to take a break between every block whether it be 5 min. or 30 min. and I'm wondering if I have the luxury of leaving the room stretching for 1 min. doing a few jumping jacks and returning to my seat all within 5 min. If there is not enough time, would you recommend just stretching at your seat without standing up?

Test is in a few days and I don't want any little thing like stretching to be an issue. Any tips/advice would be appreciated!

I'm kind of thinking the same thing right now so I'm spending my last days doing NBME 12 and 7 even though I had planned to just spend this time reviewing FA. Hope it pays off and I don't forget something stupid from FA. I'm halfway through 12 and I'm sh*tting in my pants though.

For the spastic colon, it's nothing that a little loperamide can't fix. I took one before the test just to make sure I'd be okay. Worked out great.

I don't know if I should put this here but I know a couple(2 to be exact lol) of the professors that were writing questions for the USMLE Step 1 this year and they said that they do look at First Aid to modify their questions because they want to test us on concepts not on facts we are spitting out from review books. This is specific for the harder questions, not the easy ones that we should know. One of them was adamant about me avoiding FA for my review for this reason. I still used FA though, I don't care.

Will it make me feel bloated? I have this wierd thing about my bowel function...I can't get in the zone if I gotta go every few minutes.

I'm not really sure but it might. I don't really have any problems when it comes to bowel anxiety but I just took it to make sure I wouldn't have any interruptions throughout the day. I didn't feel bloated at all though.

I think I will try it tomorrow just to get a feel for it in my system. Thanks alot!

Anybody else feel like the Behavioral science questions were especially obtuse this year? For our school I had taken the BS NBME so I thought I had seen it all!

On one of mine I actually broke the cardinal rule and referred the patient away. I just couldn't see how any of the other answers could be right!

Was it a referral to a psychiatrist to assess competency bc of her voodoo beliefs?

that BSP shelf had riiiiidiculous ethics. i think i broke that rule on the shelf exam also. i think they've seen the 'rules' or whatever and are now going to make us go against them. the stems were also obscenely long on that. also congrats on being done. i can't wait. 8 days. i'm going to vomit on my FA from now until, i hate hate hate hate hate this book.

it would take me between 6 and 12 min depending on whether or not i needed a cry after the block i took... (no joke).. but the break time starts counting down from 60 min so you have buffer room. i probably had 15 min of break time left over at the end of the test anyway.

My step1 had several ridiculous bsp questions that I was not able to answer with any sort of confidence (and this is coming from somebody who broke 900 on the behavioral shelf). Oh well. Good luck everybody. Should get my scores tomorrow :xf::scared:

Anyone know how score reporting works? Do they send out an e-mail telling you your score is ready, or do they help nurture your neurotic side and make you hit refresh every two seconds throughout the day?

That is my understanding. They email you, and then you have to log in to a specific site to view your results. That's what I have heard. I took mine on the 19th. Part of me is getting my hopes up that I may get my score tomorrow.

Hey, Fillabuster! Thanks for the response. So, I did some searching on SDN and found out how you can tell if you are getting your scores on Wednesday. You log on to your NBME account, and on the left there is a tab labeled "request documents." If your scores are scheduled to come out today, then it will have all your contact information etc. when you click this tab. If your results are not ready, it will display a message telling you that no scores are available because not enough time has elapsed since test day etc. (I got this message at 11:50PM and it switched over to the message with my contact info at midnight EST).

Good luck!

Wow this is great! While my contact info is not displayed, at least I know for sure now that I won't be getting my scores tomorrow. I can sleep in peace tonight...hahaha. Best of luck, and I hope you get the score you want!

I don't know if that info is correct, but then I did not check my NBME examinee page the day before so I could be mistaken..

If you're to receive your Step 1 scores on a given Wednesday, you will get an email at 10:30am est detailing the process and at approximately 11:00am will have a "Print Score Report" added to the VERY top of the left side menu. That link will allow you to open a PDF containing your score report for the next 30 days. (There is always a request documents tab as soon as you register an account at that site. Don't confuse the two. After your score is available, the request documents link CAN be used to navigate to your score report, however.)

If you took your exam on May 19th, which is after May 17th, you won't receive your scores this Wednesday or any Wednesday until July (at least if things work like previous years).

I took my exam on May 16th and didn't receive any email as yet. Is it normal to take more then 3 weeks for the score to be reported. I know it says to wait up to 8 weeks. But I haven't heard of anyone with this situation. Any help would be appreciated.
Thanks

i took mine on thurs, may 19, so i wont get anything until july 13 prolly.. i was just wondering about others who took it before.. lol
