Official 2013-2014 Heme/Onc fellowship application cycle

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
Take it easy. You got a lot already. It will save some travel money. 🙂
thanks. I applied to approx. 80 programs and only 2 invites with 1 official reject (who knows how many more).. I guess I should be happy that I have interviews while many others are still waiting for their first.. I think we should have more faith in the process since it's still very early...

Thanks for the reply. I can't do anything about my USMLE score now. 🙂
Hopefully some PD/programs may be interested in my research experience. As an old IMG, I solved my visa issue already.
dude.. you will have plenty of interviews when the interview season picks up.

@qv3755

I thought you are one of those superstars. :naughty:

Apparently, you are still within those top tier applicants. Let's keep fingers crossed.

UCSF was nice to send out rejection emails.. However, I kinda prefer the silent rejection more though.. This is only the first of August. We still have at least 3 more weeks to go before we should be concern about not having invites for interviews.

Thanks, I didn't apply. I was telling a colleague about interview invites on this forum. He doesn't follow this forum. He did not get a rejection email from UCSF.

you hit it right on point there with the Visa issue. If you're on a visa then you almost have to be a Nobel prize winner to get a clinical fellow spot here in the USA. The economy is tough and there're just too many AMG with 6 figures of student loan that want to do Hem/Onc.. Hence, PDs are pretty much obligated to take the AMGs first. It really is that simple.

Programs want the best and brightest. They are not obliged to take an AMG just because they have a debt! Having said that, many programs can't take IMGs who need a visa due to NIH funding restrictions.

However, many Northeast programs will accept IMGs who need visas too unlike most of the uptight and elitist institutions out West like Stanford, UCLA, UCSF, etc, which is why the Northeast is way ahead in everything compared to the West! 🙂

Did anyone get a rejection email from UW today & invite from UCSF?

Everyone seems to be getting interviews but no rejection emails? How are people who don't follow forums supposed to know their application status?

I haven't heard anything from UCSF.

I haven't heard from UW so I guess that's a rejection. 🙁👎

Did anyone apply to UCLA? And if you did, have they downloaded your app yet? Because they haven't for me.

You never know since there will be many cancellation when Sept gets around.. If you haven't receive an official rejection letter then you still could be on the 2nd or 3rd list of possible invites.. unless it's very late in the season (Oct, etc.). Keep your heads up everyone!

Very true about the obligation part.. NIH funding restriction started a couple of years ago when the US economy was in a recession.. With so many budget cut, I personally think the restrictions are here to stay.. which mean that it will be even much harder next year for IMGs without GC and/or US citizenship. Or unless you're a Nobel Prize winner in medicine, you can pretty much write your own ticket anywhere. :naughty:

Some people have received rejection emails from UCSF. My buddy did not, so you might get invites or are being considered.

UW sent invites today. Some programs send in batches, which doesn't mean that it is the 2nd or 3rd round, but some PCs don't like to deal with all reply emails/calls at once. There is no way to know.

The fact that you did not receive any sort of email from UW today means that there is still hope for you.

I also got a UW invite tonight. Did the people who also got interviews get your emails or in the morning or the afternoon?

Haven't heard from UCSF at all. So I think they are still reviewing likely if you have not heard.

Hope we all hear more programs sending out invites this week.

Good luck to everyone.

QV - does your last name start near A or near Z?? (haha)

it's more closer to Z.. don't count on it though 'cuz it's still too early in the season.. I believe for most of the programs that we see in this forum, the first batch of interviews already went out.. I think most programs have an average of 3..

Anyone have any insight into the following programs?

UTenn - memphis? research opps?
UMiami - no idea.. website is very primitive
VCU - seems to be a solid program with good liquid tumor.
UCDavis - they advertise a lot of research available. no liquid tumors? do BMT at outside institution?

Thanks

BUMC 8/7 also - input appreciated on this program as well

I'm interested in liquids mostly because of past experiences but have not ruled out solids.

Washington 8/6 -- the survey approach was interesting
Vanderbilt 8/5- have they scheduled your interview yet?

Some people posted UW interview invite in the AM on 8/6. Prolly rolling basis, who knows 😕 The PC at our program sends them out in batches, which is prolly a bit unfair because some will get to pick dates ahead of others.

Programs should at least send a rejection email so ppl can stop wondering what happened to their app.

This rather insightful post, explains why they do it the way they do.

Anyone got scheduled yet after the survey ?

how many interviews are you going to try to make it this season?

I'm probably going on 10-15. May have over-applied but there wasn't much data for how many to shotgun given my credentials.

Thank u! Seems u are doing quite well... All the best!

Does anyone know which one of these two is stronger in basic science research? Thanks!

the big wheel keeps on turning
U Colorado and U Alabama sent invitations today:luck:

Penn by a whisker. But if you have IVs at both, why not check them both out? Also, FWIW, I've heard (and have no 1st hand information to back it up) better things about Pitt than Penn, at least on the clinical side.

I noticed a lot of the other forums (Cards, GI, etc) post on rejections. I think that will help a lot of us (who haven't heard back from programs) know about our application status. These are rejections that I have noticed on here or from friends. Please feel free to add:

Hem-Onc rejections:
Dana Farber
UCSF
UT Southwestern
LIJ
