and how far in advance should you do it? is it ok to do it a week prior?

From what I have heard at least a week but to be fair to others to be offered and give them a chance to arrange for travel etc I would personally do it at least two in advance. Also ask the PC in the other thread I guess.

cool. thanks. I'm hoping to go on at least 10 interviews but it's quite daunting to make all of the schedules work. I wonder what's the record for going on iv from previous seasons?!

BMC is a national amyloidosis magnet center. So probably BMC for heme.

Thanks gutonc. I applied to too many, got a whole bunch of invites already. I will have to cancel some but waiting on some more programs.
 
Does it reflect badly on me if i tell programs that i have not narrowed my interests yet but do have a liking for so and so. Do they actually expect us to be sure about the sub-sub field before actually starting fellowship?

They only do most autos, minimal or no allos. If your interesting in transplant, this isn't the best place. Then again, I think most programs in Boston get their numbers depleted by MGH

How much you think an away elective at MD Anderson and a very good LOR from there would add to the application?

it would definitely help.. and even more so in Texas.
 
Basically my credentials are:

IMG on J1
Multiple Awards
Electives at MD Anderson
Very good LOR including one from a renown Professor at MD Anderson
Two poster presentation and two oral presentation.

I wonder what my chances are... I am currently at 1-1 interview VS rejection.

It depends on who wrote that LOR. However, it cannot hurt unless the LOR says not so nice things about you! I know a couple of people in my program who did an elective there, but never got an invite from MDA.

They tend to take their own UT residents first from what one of our Onc guy who trained at MDA says and then fill the rest with the best🙂

You will find out within a couple of weeks😀 Seriously, they get apps from people with top of the line creds. No one can tell you what your chances are to get an invite from anywhere. Apply, wait, rejoice or mourn and move on!
 
LOL...True...just some paroxysmal anxiety. Well Happy I am not at least at zero.
 
Any inputs about oncology only programs? what about practice wise? Should I apply to a couple of programs as a backup plan since I am an IMG requiring visa?

Have you scheduled it? Then as soon as you decide not to go. 2 weeks is standard. 1 week is defensible. 72 hours in an extremely rare scenario.

Less than that (barring a verfied emergency, like you're dead...not your mom or your wife...you) then I wouldn't be surprised to find your IM PD getting a call from the PD of that program and nuking the chances of future applicants from your program.

If you're talking about turning down an interview offer before you've scheduled it, again, it's nice to do it as soon as possible so they can give it to someone else. But if they don't hear from you in a week or so, they'll just assume you don't want it and move on without you.
 
VCU vs UT Memphis -I like benign and malignant heme so definitely want to have good heme exposure, otherwise am not decided on solid vs liquid yet.

UWisconsin today - several dates in Sept/October.

What is the relative strength of programs comparing Minnesota/Wisconsin/Cincinnati?

UWisconsin also has a great BMT/liquids. With all of the interviews that you have, you can actually write a book about all of the programs after your visits. I'm sure there're a lot of people in this forum that would be interested...

UWis~UMinn>>UCinn

Wisconsin is stronger in solids, UMinn is the place to be for BMT. Both are solid mid-tier programs. If I had to give up an interview at any of those 3 places, UCinn would be first by a country mile.
