Official 2013-2014 Heme/Onc fellowship application cycle

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
I saw you got UC Davis. Do you know what kind of program they have? I saw somewhere in the forum that it is in cow country. Not sure what that means, rural area?

UC Davis Medical Center is in the middle of Sacramento and has a population of nearly half a million people. So no...not a cow town.

Somebody else earlier asked about the program. It's a decent, small program with fair solid tumor and research and minimal heme.

Duke invitation today.
whoever told you to apply broadly (90programs??).. i'm not sure if he/she even know you. Without a doubt, your background must be quite impressive (DO or not). Congrats!! I doubt you even have to go to 10-15interviews.. but do go to as many as you can to appreciate the courtship b/c you deserve it. 👍

Does anyone have any thoughts on Boston medical versus umass?

Niviancer applied to 90 programs and has gotten so many interviews and it's still fairly early. I think he will have broken the record for most invitations ever! Congrats!

Hey

Congrats on the zillion interviews. Are you an IMG or US grad?

You don't need to interview at either of them. I'm being dead serious.

For everybody else? BMC for clinical, UMass for research, although both programs suffer in all respects for their proximity to the HMS behemoth. BMC gets the "advantage" of being the public hospital for Beantown.

any thoughts on Baystate vs Tuft?

Very "meh" on both of them. Baystate probably gets a better clinical mix than Tufts, but almost everyone I know with a serious medical problem that falls into the Baystate catchment area goes to Boston if they can.
thanks. what do you mean by "meh"? unfortunately for me, I only applied to 4 programs in boston.. got 1 rejection from dfcc and probably 1 silent rejection from bidmc.. I'm only left with these twos. I'm interested in malignant hem but also leaning toward a good clinical program overall. Thanks for the much needed info, Gutonc.

at qv3755..did Baystate and Umass sent invites already?

I interviewed last year at both..Umass has BMT, probably more exposure to malignant hem. Baystate stronger in Solids. BMT rotation at Tufts.

Ah I see, thank u gutonc. Do they have any well-known oncs on their faculty that u know of and how is their research? They list a lot of it on their website. Thanks.

thanks. I didn't apply to UMass. Yes, got Baystate invite today. Tuft last week.

did you get an invite from Baystate today, too?

Did anyone notice that UCLA downloaded the USMLE transcript a day earlier than the rest of the app? I am guessing my app got filtered out because of scores 🙁 Good luck to those in the running still.

I wouldn't read into it.. The ERAS system does all sorts of funky stuff when downloading.

For qv3755...No.. I did not get invitation this time for neither...this process is so tricky.. Got invitations from places last year declined me and places that called me didn't invite me.. Maybe didn't get them a right impression.. Hoping I will get a few more.. So far I have 7...what about u?

So weird. I finished all my three USMLE steps two years ago and the USMLE transcripts was available originally on 7/14/13. However, I just noticed in ADTS the USMLE transcripts was lately updated on 8/14/13 and some program re-downloaded MyERAS application after 8/14/13. Does anybody know what's going on???

Standard ERAS hiccups. Ignore it. Seriously, it means nothing.

What does it mean if a program who already sent interviews and rejections did not contact me at all yet?

but that there might be still hope for an interview? I am at 1 interview still so its making me a bit anxious.

Yes, some programs are still digging through the apps or waiting for cancellations thus are not rejecting the tweeners.

University of Florida 8/20

Gutonc's post sums it up nicely. It means you are not their #1 choice or your application was never reviewed for various reasons that gutonc mentioned in that post. There ain't anything you can do about that process.

Apply, wait, rejoice/mourn & move on! 🙂

You prolly can skip this one too! MDA & MSKCC invites on their way to your inbox soon!

Haha i wish. I would love MDACC but I'm not optimistic.

I did get Fox Chase today though. Only 2 dates in November, maybe i'm in their second batch or backup.

Invitations
Cleveland clinic
Tuscon
Minnesota

Rejections
UNC
Iowa

Definitely some activity out there...

It's raining rejections:

Iowa
UMinn
Maryland
UNC
TJ

Surprisingly, I haven't heard anything from my only hope - community programs. Did anyone get invites from community based programs yet?

I've heard that Winthrop and St Lukes Roosevelt NYC has sent interviews.

Hey,
Any thoughts on Tucson?

Don't know a lot about the program, but it looks like they are doing 120 transplants/ year (40 allos) and even some cords, sounds decent to me! Previous comments say its a good program. NCI credited cancer center. A resident from my program went to med school there and she liked it.
See y'all on interviews and
Go IMG's!!!

Can great letters (and i mean great letter using previous examples provided by Gutonc) be bad for smaller programs? ie. will programs not send out invites because they don't think that you will come? is that possible?

I think maybe it's overall application strength than LORs alone.

I think maybe if they think you wouldn't come anyway why bother.

I got multiple top 10-20 interviews and my rejection was at UNC chapel hill which is decent program but not top 10-20. So I don't know why I would get the top tier and not somewhere like UNC unless programs do feel if you won't end up there why bother?! I dunno that's just how I'd guess based on what I've read in prior posts.

looking back, if i had the time, i would cater my statement to each individidual program. i applied to 70+ and only had 2 statement drafted (one for community based and one for academic/research). I'm getting rejections from most places somewhere in the middle probably due to them not having people doing what I wish to do.

What is tweeners?
i think they're referring to people like us.. not top choice but not bad enough to warrant a rejection right away.. we should count on other people cancelling their interviews. I think there are quite a few here in this forum that got 10-20 interviews. I doubt anyone will be able to go on 20 IVs and so there's hope as long as we have not received rejection letters.

Have been enjoying this thread immensely. Overall, I have been suprised by my interview offers (seemingly random) thus far in terms of programs I did and did not expect, as well as rejections, applied to 20+ programs. If possible I would like to narrow my list, due to financial and time constraints. I know this is a personal judgement call but would appreciate everyone's thoughts. My interest is solid oncology, but research mostly hematology oriented.
