Official 2013-2014 Heme/Onc fellowship application cycle

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
Have been enjoying this thread immensely. Overall, I have been suprised by my interview offers (seemingly random) thus far in terms of programs I did and did not expect, as well as rejections, applied to 20+ programs. If possible I would like to narrow my list, due to financial and time constraints. I know this is a personal judgement call but would appreciate everyone's thoughts. My interest is solid oncology, but research mostly hematology oriented.

have you narrowed down your list of 10-15 IVs? are you still waiting on a few more?

how are the SoCal programs stack-up against similar programs in the Northeast/NYC area (not including MSKCC)?

I don't understand this "keeping my application on file"? are they just being nice here?

Outside of UMass, Rochester and UNC - I think they're all very excellent programs. UNC probably has a better solids than Wake Forrest but then again, I'm more of a heme person and so there's some bias there.

any last year fellows or seniors can comment on this? are we more than half way there already? For those top 20 programs, I doubt there will be any late cancellations.. I wonder how many invites people will receive in mid Sept if there's no traffic within the next 2 weeks.

Congratulations!

Anyone heard back from Emory yet regarding the dates?
you might have to pick up the phone and call them for confirmation. I didn't get invite there but had to call on a few of my invites. Don't get discourage if no one pick up. Just call every hour or so until you get a hold of someone..

would anyone be interested in starting a separate forum to share their interview impressions on Hem/Onc programs?

Hi guys. New to the forum. Enjoyed the posts so far. Quick question: Gotten
rejections from most of the "elite" programs(Hopkins, penn, DF/HCC, etc.) with the exception of UCSF. Is the selection process truly random or is the west coast overall less competitive?

Are you an IMG needing a visa?

3 of my friends who are also IMG needing visa with great scores & pubs got a rejection from MDACC while another who is also an IMG and doesn't need a visa did not get interview or rejection. I wonder if they review visa needing applications at all or just send bulk rejections to them.

West coast highly competitive I think. Several reasons like not many programs and too few spots, so they probably try to accommodate their own first (if you look through the forum, one of the year someone published Stanford internal IM residents fellowship match data and their hem/Onc had 5 of their own IM residents match there!).

Similar with UCSF, UCLA, UCSD, etc UW is of course another top program so highly competitive. Utah also similar to other top programs and they have only 4 spots (their IM program has something like 30+ residents in each year!! And are bound to have some internal candidates too). Some states have no programs at all like NV, IA or have only one like WA, PO. CA is the most populous state but does not have many spots, strange.

NV has MedOnc program this year. IA has their own program, which is also very good. CA programs has the PTAL requirement that make them very difficult for non-residents.

No dude, Idaho and NV don't have Hem/Onc programs. I think NV had an onc program that went bankrupt (along with the casinos in Vegas🙂. PTAL is for IMGs only I think and probably not for LCME accredited US medical schools.

Oh wait, I mean ID (Idaho) not IA!

No actually from big program SE region

If you have decent scores, you shouldn't have a problem I think. There was another AMG in this forum with low scores but seems to have got many interviews.

Has Anyone Heard Back From Utah Yet ?
I sent an email to the program coordinator then she sent dates ... I think she was not clear when sent the original email...shoot her an email...I am going there on 27th🙂

I looked through last year's thread. Last invite posted was 9/18, which is roughly 8 weeks out from when the first interview was posted. There were still many people posting invites the first week of september and then they slowly stopped coming. Going by that, we are at the end of week 5. So yes, it looks like we're past the halfway point or right around there.

How does Utah stack up against Hopkins, TJ and UW in terms of research (solids & liquids)?

Thanks she didn't reply to my initial email. Sent her another one today.

IA is for iowa. ID is for Idaho. Thanks for the info on NV and CA buddy!

or any other program in NYC?

Gutonc -
has your program sent out IVs yet?

Tier 2 -

It's a good program if you ask me. if it's not top 20 then definitely a top 40 category. Good in heme/BMT. This came from a recent grad who's now at the NCI/NIH.

On bethematch, it appears they've done less than 50 total transplants last year?
