went to 9 IVs so far.. Here's my ROL based on what I know. Please provide your comments on #3 thru 15 on their order. I'm interested in malignant heme/BMT transplant

1. UW fred hutchingson
2. NCI/NIH
3. Karmanos/Wayne State
4. University of Buffalo/roswell park
5. Tuft univ
6. UVA
7. Tulane
8. MUSC
9. West Virginia University
10. Univ. Connecticut
11. NS/LIU Hospital
12. MSU
13. Texas a&m
14. Baystate regional
15. Newark BIMC

I think ur ,list is good as it is..maybe baystate a little higher and uconn a little lower
 
Congrats man! That's a very good list. I will have to come and check a few of these out before know how they are

How are you fitting in so many interviews during residency training?

Your program must be accommodating!

I had to decline several because I logistically couldn't make it out there.

it takes some planning. I scheduled my vacation ahead of time so that it can fall during this period and that's the only reason I could do it. Otherwise, it's impossible. There won't be any vacation for me this year.

I would rank roger Williams ahead of UTMB and UF Jacksonville

Going there for interview soon. Any information about the program? Not much information available on their website or Freida
 
At LIJ they made no mention of him at all.. maybe due to the ongoing merge between NS and LIJ but have to think his being there probably doesn't impact your training or interactions much?

BU PD was awesome and seemed genuinely invested in fellows and their academic pursuits.

i agree with Nivancer. NSLIJ is pretty much a community program with a university name. Kante Rai might be there but there's really no preserved time for fellows to do research. It's pretty much a 3 years clinical fellowship. if you're motivated, you can find the time to do clinical research since they do have some pretty good trials running... I didn't apply to BU and didn't go there and so don't know much about them. did you apply to Tuft? I think it's a good program. 50% of the their fellows go into academia each year. They do an average of 50 BMT per year but i was told that if i want to do BMT then i should not go there..

TJ is what I called overrated and underrated program at the same time: overrated in the sheer number of people that applied (probably known to be IMGs friendly), and underrated in their clinical research capabilities. Regarding BMT, Foxe Chase is probably the best out of that group. TJ usually accept at least 1 from their own program and 1 from nearby Albert Einsteins if their residents couldn't get accepted into better programs (MDACC, etc.).

Thanks, I agree. In that area (& I meant Philly + PA generally), I will rank UPMC first and then Fox. Am not going to rank TJ, wasn't impressed at all with their research or clinical training for that matter, which is just ok I thought but not great. Faculty was nice but that ain't gonna get me good training though. So, I am deleting it from my list.

UNC might has a better medical school but Wake Forrest is much better for hem/onc fellowship especially for heme (benign + malignant). Wish i had an interview there. Good luck!!

Pitt (location not optimal for me)

Where would UC Davis and Irvine insert into the list? I have no familiarity at all with those 2 programs.

Ignoring your location issue, I'd put Pitt after UNC. I'd slot Davis and Irvine somewhere toward the end there. None of those are bad programs at all. Davis is very weak in liquids, Irvine fairly strong in liquids. Both suffer from their proximity to stronger programs/more famous hospitals but neither are bad by any stretch.

just my opinion and from my source (with BMT bias)- UNC is strong in benign hem but not malignant hem (its next door neighbor Duke is much better in malignant hem- they do a lot of cords). Wake Forest is better in BMT and malignant hem b/c they have a couple of the people that I'd like to work for. UNC just lost several faculties. I know one person who just left for Moffitt. Anyways, there's nothing wrong with UNC but I'd personally go to Wake Forrest over UNC. Duke is by far the best in that group and also the world leader in cord if you like BMT.

BTW (Niviancer) - I wouldn't rank UNC above FoxChase if you like BMT.

UNC is also not known to be an IMG friendly program (not that you're IMG) but thought to throw it out there for those who would like to know. They haven't had an IMG fellow like forever...

didn't apply there but went there for IM IV. Rush Univ has more research opportunities than Cook County program although they both service the same hospital. Rush is probably third or fourth rank in Chicago (behind Northwestern and Chicago).

🙂 I talked to my mentors and Hem/Onc PDs quite a bit.. again, there's a lot of BMT bias since that's how I asked. But I guess the only way to know for sure is to visit the program and talk to current and past fellows. What I don't know is the overall reputation.. Gutonc might be the better person to ask since he's been around for quite some times. 😍 At the end of the day, I want to be able to look for jobs if I cannot make it in academia. This is where I think reputation will play a great deal.. anyone can provide me with your input on my list based on reputation alone?? i.e. who would you hire first out of my list??

This is not true. I personally know at least one IMG who is a current fellow at UNC.
 
My friend from UNC told me there were probably one or two IMG in the past 5 years. Traditionally, UNC is NOT a IMG friendly program, for sure.

I also have not heard back after sending my preferred dates...
 
Tomorrow night I will have to miss a pre-IV dinner/social due to scheduling problems. Should I mention it and explain or say nothing unless they do.

Whenever I had to miss them, I mentioned it at the lunch with the fellows on the interview day. "Yeah, I was really bummed I had to miss the dinner last night but flight/rotation/meth bender made it so I couldn't get here in time. Mind if I ask you a few questions about...?"
 
anyone has any comments on Univ of Kentucky program? did anyone attend this year IV? should I go? how does this program compare to some of the mid-tier programs on my list?

thanks, Gutonc. Not sure if i can make it to UK though. so tough since it's so late in the season. how do you rank UK vs. Tuft vs. Tulane vs. UVA vs MUSC. I also like WVU but it's such a mountain country (pretty scenic but quite remote for me).

There's not enough objective difference between those programs for anybody but you to meaningfully rank them. I will say that Wayne State and Buffalo are probably a half a notch above them all.
