Official 2014 Step 1 Experiences and Scores Thread

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
NBME had updated it's CBSSA score these past few months, for example the new chart says a 390 is a 205. (390/205).
On the UWSA, the CBSSA score for example the same 390 is 190. (390/190).

Is there a correlation between the two or are they two different score predictors?
They both share the same ranges for the CBSSA score ranging from 10-800. Therefore, if NBME updates the way it scores, wouldn't UW do the same? So is it that possible since UW didn't update their score chart that their scores are a little off?

Insight?

Thanks

they are different tests if I understand what you are asking and saying hence they would have different grading curves.

Each test is unique in that respect. Each NBME and UWSA exam.

Okay, I am done with Step 1

I found it overall more difficult. Definitely more wtf questions, experiments, and some that look more opinion than having an actual, correct answer. I had the pelvic anatomy, incontinence, couple murmurs, couple EKGs, several biostats and a few hard trial questions, and some hard images. Mostly, I had 20-30 questions dealing with a pregnant woman. And I HATE OB! I just had to laugh when another one after another one showed up.

I truly have no clue how I did. I think I passed. All I can say for sure. I knew some stuff cold, others stuff I felt I had a decent idea but made me think/could have been off, pick'em, and stuff I did not know. I say probably 40% on the test was not in any of my review directly.

I did:
DIT x 2
FA x 4
Pathoma x 2
UW x 1 = 78%
Rx around 30% through it = 65-70%

School Diagnostic = 180 (2 months out)
USMLE 16 = 241 (month out)
USMLE 13 = 254 (2 weeks out)
USMLE 15 = 256 (4 days out)

I created my own practice test out of UW questions (161 questions/half a test) = 77% (2 days out)
Free "138" = 85% [249] (1 day out)

I finished each section with plenty of time. I averaged around 8 minutes left over to review questions on each block. There was only one block I wish I had a little more time on. I did not find the questions stems that much longer. You just have to learn how to read them to get out what you need. Ton of fill info.

Well, that is about it. If the test is graded like UW and a 70% correct is a good score then I will be ok. But, if you have to get around 90% correct to get that score then I am in trouble.

I feel I am more around a 65-70% correct rate.

Anyways, I wanted a 230 going into it and would be happy with a 220. I am known for doing poorly on standardized tests and have never matched my practice scores. So, I will take whatever I can get as long as it passing. Would really hope for at least a 200. Most importantly, it is over..................for now.

I can sleep. 😴

Would love to hear from some of those June takers that got their scores back and how they thought they did bad and missed way more than on NBMEs and still got a similar score to NBMEs. Trying to gauge whether I should feel fine or like I barely passed....lol. I know I did not break the 240+ but at least a 220.

I was actually being serious. I missed enough to put me at the 65-70% range at least. Just like in some UW sections but it was harder because some of this crap I have never seen so I could not really guess that well. There was no leading me to the answer like UW either. And I missed some stuff I usually would not like everyone else. I am not trying to be one of these folks that think they failed and then get a 250. I have a good idea of the % I missed. I had enough time to go back over each section and count except one. I figure my stupid mistakes and luck may cancel each other out or be close at least. I am trying to see if others have a similar feeling of the percent they missed and what the final outcome was. Trying to see there is a way to get a better understanding of how the grading works. I know it is a mystery but I like to speculate. We need a good conspiracy....haha

Congratulations, on the Completion of your Exam.

Trust me No body is :
trying to be one of these folks that think they failed and then get a 250
but still they Come out of the Exam Feeling Like Crap

You Were in Good Shape Going to the Exam, You were Well Prepared, And You Did your very Best.
Seriously Speaking, Your Score Will be No Less than 240.

You Generally Remember the Answers you Spent more Time on in the Exam and Tought Deeply on. You Had 322 Question which were 60% of info You came Across and most probably Got Correct. The other 40% was not only New To you, It was New to all Examinees, so the Chances Are, that Most of them got them incorrect as well, but still Managed to Reach their NBME Scores.

Lets Not Forget about the Experimental Questions which definilty are with the 40% Questions you have not seen before.

Chin up Chin up and have Faith..

The caps. Dear god, the caps.

That's what I am hoping for. I just had a tough form. Like I said before 230+ and I am happy. 220+ I am okay with.
Just glad it is done. But, was curious as to what others thought back in June. I know they said they did much worse but none really had a percentage like I am thinking. Just wanted to see if we could take some of the mystery out. Probably not. Oh well, I will let it go and pray you are right. I see more a 230+.

Congrats on being done J DUB. You did your best and am sure you did fine. I feel you on the apprehension...its so stressful when you cant reasonably gauge where you stand. My advise --> suppression 24 hrs/ day for 21 days and try to enjoy whatever is left of summer.

Congrats on being done J DUB...my exam is on Aug 31st and all I can say is I seriously am breaking down and can not wait to be done w/ this exam. I'd be happy with anything around a 220 at this point...i don't even care anymore. You're a lucky guy to be done! And I'm sure you did spectacular...you did everything you had to and moreee...no doubt you got a 245+!!

Go relax and party it up now 🙂

Anyone else receiving their results tomorrow? Yikes! :nailbiting: This isnt going to be pretty!
Good luck! I wish I was getting mine today. It is what it is. Just accept it and move forward. There are plenty of more battles to fight and this will be a distant memory come residency.

Thanks for your confidence but there is no way I got that score. Maybe a 230+. I missed too many.

According to what I have read, I should get my score today as well. Have you gotten any kind of e-mail indicating that you will be getting your score today? It seemed to me from what I've read that there would be two - one telling me I would get the score later, and one telling me the score was ready, but I really don't know. I did notice at midnight that clicking "request documents" was different. I cannot wait another week.

I havent received anything. I'm an IMG though, so maybe things are slightly different (although I doubt it). I checked the ECFMG site this morning, and it says that my page was last updated on Aug 19. I know some colleagues who received their score (not today) as early as 8 am, others at 11 a.m so maybe we should just be patient. I absolutely cant wait another week either. Plus I've been tentatively scheduled to begin rotations next week provided I receive my results this week. The anguish!

You will be fine. Having a difficult form will not keep you from getting your predicted score. People score significantly lower than predicted when they miss the easy Qs due to anxiety. Good luck!

I am confused between pathoma or goljan audios. I did Goljan RR before starting UW. I annotated my FA with Goljan. My current UW pathology % age is 78(87 percentile).

would it be a good idea to do pathoma or goljan audios after UW?
I'd really appreciate if someone help me out with this.

It's always a good idea to use Pathoma regardless of where you stand in terms of UWorld discipline score. Pathoma has almost become a must-use resource for Step 1, and this is from someone who was in the 99th percentile for Pathology on UWorld and read Robbins almost cover-to-cover over the first two years.

Pathoma, Pathoma, Pathoma........
Problem with Goljan audio is that they have never been updated (?10-12 yr old) but since you have already done Goljan RR it would be a good idea to just do Pathoma.

do you think the basic principles of pathology have changed greatly in the last 10 years? really the only things that are out of date are the meds that are used for treatment

What's the best source for listening to heart murmurs? This may sound uncanny, but I've listened to easyausculation.org, ACLS and another source and all of them give me different sounding murmurs for the same pathology... I know this sounds impossible but trust me lol.

What do ya'll recommend as the Gold standard? And yes I do know that the question stem may give the murmur away and I'm not gonna spend that much time on this, but doing a quick hearing of each murmur wont take more than 15min.

Thanks.

I thought Pathoma was good esp when using it with class. But, during my review, I found most of it was in FA in some way. The anemias and white blood cell chapters were really good. Those 3-4 chapters there.

I did my major last review reading a section in FA followed by that same section of material in Pathoma.

But, then again, I think I had a hard, good Path class. So, I was always good in this area and pharm.

molecular bio, genetics, and micro and biochem to some extent were my problem areas. I just could not remember all that small detail bs for micro and biochem. The first two I have never been good at. Wish I came from a bio background so I could have taken them in undergrad.

Yes, Please tell us more about your exam, how do you suggest we should prepare in order to be ready for the 40% Questions?

Any Certain topics we should be paying more attention to?

Thanks.

I think everyone's test, for the most part, is different. So the 40% on his test can be a 40% on something completely different on you're test. You can't prepare for those things.

IMG here, test is in 9 days .... Freaking out
UWSA1 200 (1.5 month ago)
UWSA2 232( 1 month)

NBME 12, 13, 15 all scored in the 200-210 range.

Made alot of easy errors on NBMES , havent taken an NBME for about 3 weeks on purpose.

Did DIT, Pathoma, about to finish my first 3 run through FA as well as my 2nd run through of UW, feeling more confident just have to avoid silly mistakes. Goal is a 220. Will be happy with anything over 215.

Wanted to know any last minute tips ?? My plan for the last 9 days was finish FA (3rd time), do UW qs that I struggled or didnt understand, and doing RX qs in between.

Just want a 220 !!!!!!!

Hey JDUB, how did you're exam go? Was it anything like uworld or the nbme's or just alot of random stuff?
It was harder than NBME for sure. Harder than UW overall. Half the block I knew........but there was around 10-15 each block that was my best guess or I just did not know. And it was more towards the 15. I only had one block where I felt like I did well like missing around 6. Then, there was those I felt good about but not sure.

Like I mentioned before, I have never seen some and then those what is the next best guess. It is just a different kind of test. Around 60% was normal and then there was the best guess stuff and hard, crazy stuff. I just have never seen or heard of.

I really have no clue what I will score. Hope for a 230+. I have never reached practice scores on any standardized test. I am a bad guesser. But, I do feel like I passed and in the end that is all I care about. Pass and move on.

I could not prepare now or even have a clue how to look up the answer on most of it. It is really almost like opinion and then some stuff I did not understand, never seen.

If you get a form like that you just have to not freak out and do your best to reason through it. Spend time on ones you have a shot at guessing right. Making sure you do not make stupid mistakes on others.

Do more NBMEs, free 138, etc. I think taking as many practice tests right before the test helps make it feel just like another test. So, I really was not nervous. First time, I ever had a good night sleep before a big test and during the test the ridiculous of some of it actually took the pressure off.

I think going through FA right before it helps too so you can remember the small details.

Thanks JDUB. I hope you nail that 230+ man. you've been working hard.

Yea im gonna do the free 138 and 16, besides that im just doing as many UW and RX qs as possible, and reading FA.

JDUB im sure you did well !!!!

Cant wait to get this over with, want to pass and try to get a 220!!

Thanks. Wish you good luck and test. Yeah, that was my goal going into it. I never thought I could hit the practice scores I did. I have always been a practice score champion! I gave it my all. I would not even know how to prepare better for a redo.

It is great to have it over with but the waiting sucks too......haha. Finish strong and let it be what it be. All you can do.

It may be in FA, but Pathoma teaches you how to conceptualize disease, not just memorize random factoids.

The basic principles of pathology as in Goljan Audio has changed a lot in last 10 yrs.

For the most part his audios are still very relevant. There are only a few things he said that I can think of that I had heard/read differently from a more recently released source. I got a few questions on my exam from the audio, one glaring one that was almost word for word an example he gave.

Sometimes it isn't even the content that's the most important, it's getting you to think and understand, which is what he does and likewise why Pathoma is so good.

Agree that integration is the key but Pathoma & now Raymon (Integrated cases) does it better since they are always up to date.

Bottomline: Goljan was the king but now there are better options.

If I took my test on 8/19, a Tuesday. Should I get my score on 9/10? 4th Wednesday since it was taken on a Tuesday.
20>27>3>10

thanks
Yes, it was like that for me. Got my results around 9 a.m but some people have it around 11 a.m of that wednesday (permit dissapeared on monday).
