Everyone buy these lectures

I'm planing to have Red-bull energy drink in my breaks. i was wondering if having too much of it(after every block which makes it 6 cans and each can contains 80mg of caffeine) is dangerous ? plz share your opnion/experience on this.

Don't do this lol. Maybe drink a half of one midway through and the other half 3/4 the way through. You do not want to A.) Have to void 24/7 and B.) Have palpitations that distract you from your test.

Man u dont need any of that. Considering the amount of time and effort uve put preparing for the test, ull be fired up with adrenaline on test day. Personally i brought 3 gatorades, 3 bananas and 2 choclate bars to test day and it went smoothly.

I took one redbull can after the 3rd block and it's effect was very good 😀

But for the last 3 or 4 days of my study I was taking one can per day. I don't know if it's good to try it for the first time on that day.

I kept with my normal schedule for test day. I was used to having an energy drink every afternoon, so I brought one to have at lunch (between the 4th and 5th blocks). That 5th block felt great and the rest wasn't bad either. I knew I was nearing the home stretch so I feel like my energy was up a bit more anyways.

Since you are use to 1 already, why not drink 1 when you have 3 blocks to go?

yeah I'm thinking to use 3 energy drinks. One after 1st block the other after 3rd block and the last after the 5th block. in the rest of the breaks I'm planing to eat a banana and a bar of chocolate 😛 hope i'll enjoy the day 🙂

Would strongly advise against this unless you study with red bulls. They tend to either give you a false sense of doing well on the exam or cause you to crash psychologically if you get a few questions that stump you.

On that note has anyone that runs marathons used the nutrition method for usmle same as for marathon? Glucose gels, Gatorade, and bananas...?

So I just took my Baseline Assessment, and its left me pretty disappointed even though i know i got most things wrong because of recall . NBME 13- 224
I still haven't started UWorld and I was expecting to be able to write by August, but now I'm thinking about delaying it a bit..
Im an International Student, and i really want to break 260..Any advice on how to go on from here?

Have you considered postponing?

Hey thanks for getting back to me! no unfortunately not awful school policies. Ive come a long way man from the 150s to where i am now.

so its a blessing that i even made it this far, but it hurts to know this might be the end of my medical career. (not being overly dramatic just brutally honest)

In that case I suggest you believe in yourself, read FA Rapid Review, stay off this or any forum, have a good night's sleep the night before the exam and refrain from doing anything which you are not used to on the day of exam.
People have passed with much worse scores on NBMEs and you are just there.
Also, if you factor in the experimental questions on the test you have a good chance of passing.
Good luck!

What's your school's policy on research years? I know you're two days out from Step 1, but if you feel like your scores are still improving and you still have the motivation to keep going, it may be something to consider.

were the breaks enough for you guys, i feel like i have to get up and move every block. any suggestions how to use my break time effectively?

@Transposony Thanks you got it im done till then. report back after the ordeal is over. thanks for the encouraging words!

@Blue Flame no chance, basically if i want to extend the exam id have to transfer schools man. just not feasible but thanks for the support.

I did block 1 and 2, then took about a 8 minute break. Enough to go to the restroom and grab a quick snack. Then I did blocks 3 and 4. Took a nice 20 minute lunch break, walked around in the sun, etc. Then I took blocks 5 and 6, used the remaining time from my break and finished the beast.

I went through the tutorial pretty fast so I could bank that time. I would caution against taking a major break between each block depending on how busy the testing center is that day. You have to check in/out, get your pockets checked etc. every time you come and go. If there's a long line, it could eat up valuable break time.

Thanks man! To answer your question, if your school administers the NBME CBSE then you can use that as a baseline. I thought this test was strikingly similar to the real deal in terms of ambiguity, difficulty, and question style. NBME 11 or NBME 12 can also serve as adequate baseline measures of performance.

Starting day one of medical school I worked very hard to build a strong foundation through textbooks and course material. Through systematic repetition over the past 2 years I was able to maintain and fine-tune this foundation. I attribute my success on step 1 almost entirely to the knowledge base that I developed during MS1/MS2, and not to my dedicated step study time. Unfortunately, I can't accurately answer your question because I never felt that way.

As general advice to those students who months or years from now read through this thread and come across this post: if your goal is to hit 260+ on USMLE step 1, I suggest you give yourself the best odds for attaining this goal by working incredibly hard during MS1/MS2. You will never be given a definitive guarantee that you will break 260 on the real deal. There are too many determining factors (e.g. MS1/MS2 performance, test day performance, individual skill and test-taking ability, exam form difficulty, etc.) contributing to this final score for there to be any absolute certainties. All you can do is give yourself the closest odds to a guarantee by always giving your best effort. This does not start the first day of dedicated, this starts the first day of medical school.
Wise words. Thank you and congrats on the awesome score!

Congrats on your score! How long did it take you to get through a block of UW? I was planning to running through UW in about the same time frame but I'm worried that the timeline is too short.

Congrats! What did you do prior to the 3 wks of uworld? Also, you improved 12 points from nbme18 to 15 just doing uworld? Or did you do some extra focus on your lower areas?

it took me around four hours a block. By the last week I was running out of time and so I only really reviewed the incorrect answers. I think four weeks is probably better. I tried to start uworld earlier but was getting in the 60s because I hadn't completed content review and so felt uworld was a waste of time until I had finished content review.

I studied for around 7 weeks. The first four weeks I did only content review. I used dit and first aid. The last three weeks I did solely uworld. I only used first aid for these 3 weeks when I got questions wrong in uworld.

I think I had a lower score on nbme 18 because I wasn't used to the nbme format. I found nbme to be harder than uworld. I also made a bunch of dumb mistakes in nbme 18. Nbme 15 seemed a lot easier. I also did focus on my weak areas. In nbme 18 I got a lot of the anatomy questions wrong.

After step 1 I had no idea how I did. I thought it was much harder than uworld and nbme. There were a lot of conceptual questions. I think I marked 30-50% of all of the questions. In comparison for nbme 18 I marked 33% of the questions and nbme 15 and 16 I marked 25% of questions.

Just got my score today!
Prestudying nbme 17 - 245
Uworld average -87% (only did around 80% of uworld)
Nbme 18, 10 days out - 260
Actual exam - 262!!!

Impression: I felt like my exam was very, very difficult and not much like uworld. Nbme 18 was probably the most similar, but even that was not a great representation. I just want to give you all hope: after the exam I thought I did awful.

Can any recent test taker give us any info about NBME 18 and it's correlation with the real thing?
I took that exam exactly 1 week before my STEP. I just got my score today and it's a whopping 14 points higher than my NBME 18 score... So I maintain, as I have in the past few weeks, that 18 is an outlier. Don't freak out if you get a bad grade.
