Official 2017-2018 Rheumatology Fellowship Application Cycle

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
2 of them interviewed at 11-12 places ( one AMG and IMG without need for visa). Another one only applied to like 5 places as img needing visa.
does show that Rheum is getting more competitive...had a co resident (DO) that tried for 3 cycles to match Rheum and finally scrambled into a spot...persistence can pay off, but better to take the opportunity of any invites given to have a big ROL...better to have matched 3 out of 8 than realize that you needed the 8...

As a fellow at a program that asks our opinions on candidates, the whole package matter. Interview matters and I think that's where my co-residents ran into trouble.

wow ya'll had 5 people applying to rheum?

Six actually. I am not close with the 6th at a huge program...so not sure about her stats.

Yeah. These is a rotator here who didn't match last year who is trying again this year. Two of mine is trying again. The other is working as a hospitalist and rethinking things.

Keep the cancellations coming!
Interesting note from email: "We are interviewing less than 25% of the residents who applied to our program"

Congratulations. Still have chance to get interviews? I thought game is over.

POLL: I thought it would be interesting to see what percentage of interviews people received from their total applications! This might help applicants next year in determining the number of programs to apply to. Although a few interviews may still be out there, I imagine most have gone out by now.

So far only one interview for me.

Cancelled 8 interviews today. I did it as soon as possible to help other people get interviews. Things are also not good for Florida Programs . People are fleeing from Florida and huge traffic on high ways. I would not bother go there and risk my life or deal with hotel and airline booking cancellations, rescheduling, calling expedia etc. Among the 8 interviews that I cancelled today, 3 of them from Florida.

i would imagine the fla (ga, sc, etc) programs are probably going to cancel them anyways.

Those of you with rheum interviews, do you have a lot of research experience? How were your board scores 1-3?

just trying to get a sense of what to expect. itll be years til i can apply, if I end up doing so.

I was asked by one interviewer about my country politics and recent crisis/conflict in my home country. Also one of my friends from China was asked about how is the relationship between with China and Taiwan. Why interviewers asking these questions? What is the reason behind asking this question? Do they really want to know the truth ? or they just wanted to put me in stressful condition and want to see how I respond and handle ?They are not legal. Also, this kind of questions are double edge sword. No matter what you answer, they can conclude whatever they want. How should I prepare for future interviews? Should I just tell them that I am not interested in politics and so I am not the best person who can answer this question. Should I prepare for better answer?

Honestly, they were probably just trying to make conversation and they were probably genuinely interested. I've done a lot of interviews and have often wanted to ask that kind of question, as I follow world politics but don't have the opportunity to talk to someone from those countries very often. I didn't ask because I thought it could make someone uncomfortable, as it obviously did for you.

It's not illegal - more insensitive?

Regardless, you should respond as you should to all interview questions - eager to answer, calmly and without being flustered, and in a positive way. You want people to get a good impression of you, right? So say, "that's a great question!" and share an interesting personal story.

I really think they're just curious, so you may as well interpret it positively and use it to make a good impression.

As a general note, it's not good to say "I'm not interested in that" during any interview. People ask you questions to hear you speak and they often ask questions about topics that they themselves care about. So what they're saying to you is, "here's a topic I'd like to hear you discuss because it's interesting to me and I would enjoy that conversation." If you say, "I'm not interested in that and not the right person to answer" it just shows a lack of curiosity, lack of breadth, lack of ability to have a normal conversation, etc. No matter what, that kind of answer is not going to help you. Interview impressions can turn on a dime, so don't derail yourself over a question you aren't excited to answer. Clearly the interviewer was excited to ask it, so you should at least make a conversation out of it.

but no, those questions are not illegal...questions about whether you are married, going to have children, where else have you applied or gotten interviews...those are illegal questions.

and every question is a double edge sword and they can conclude whatever they want.

realize that the interview portion is to see if you fit in with their program...saying you are not interested in something will no doubt make the interviewer think, well what else would you not be interested in?

and yes you should prepare for a better answer.

Medicine today is a very multicultural and multi-ethnic environment. That is a question a coworker could easily ask you at work simply out of curiosity and it is okay to engage them on it and seize the opportunity to add some color to your person. Except they work for the CIA, they couldn't possibly know more about your country than you do so wouldn't you want to assume the dominant role in the dialogue and share some personal (maybe even funny) experiences? You can easily turn a seemingly political question into a very warm conversation that helps you stand out. I'd say resist the emotional response and meet them where they obviously want to meet you. It could just be a test as well...

All the best!

This is starting to get off topic, but I just wanted to point out that it's not *actually* illegal to ask questions about family situation, religion, country of origin, etc...what's illegal is to discriminate based on those things, so most employers won't even ask to avoid the appearance of discriminating. Source: 9 things hiring managers should never ask about in a job interview

But to the person who was getting asked about his home country, yeah, the interviewer probably just doesn't know anyone else from that country and they're curious and making conversation. It's not a sneaky political test. The only wrong answer you could give would be to get offended or refuse to engage.

Anyone have insight on the MetroHealth program? Pros and cons? Can message me if you prefer. Thanks!

Ohio State rejection. Email says "At this point, all decisions on interviews have been made. We do not anticipate any further offers for interviews."

Anyone knows if we can submit case reports to the ACR now within the late sumbission period?

My friend told me that she was asked by one interviewer about Donald Trump. The interviewer is likely Trump Hater. If you were asked about Trump, how will u answer? Would u choose neutral position? Or Would u agree with hate Trump? Or if u are trump lover, would u disagree with interviewer? Or just simply say I don't know politics?

Are you kidding? Just be yourself and have an informed opinion. Why all the tiptoeing?

Your answer is not helping at all. What do u mean "be yourself" ? If u are trump lover and your interviewer is trump hater, is it ok to be yourself?? And talk trump is the best to the interviewer ? After contradicting with the interviewer, do u think u will get the job there?

Anybody hear anything from any Philly programs?

that topic is like abortion...no one is neutral.
don't say you don't know politics...that will make you look bad.

make give you opinion and then shift the topic.

Looks like all programs finished their interview invitations, no more IV

Anyone had interview experience at NSLIJ? Did they email schedule of interview?

For the question where do u see yourself in 5 years, should I tell I want to do private practice or academics? I would like to tell I want academics but should I change the tone depending on program strength? If program is not good in research, I should not say I want academics, clinical trials or lab research. Am I right? Please give suggestions.

Can't you just be honest and tell your interviewer what YOU want to do? It strikes me as dishonest to tell them something and have them buy into something you are not. Just creates friction in the long run. Same is true for all those folks who tell programs how much they want to do research, only to shy away from it throughout their fellowship and go into private practice.

Anyone have any insight as to how many interviews people were requiring for a match? Trying to get a sense of where I'm at. Thx.

6 interviews will be good enough. 8 interviews will be overkill. More programs sent me interviews invites but I just simply declined them for other people.

I keep hearing that number of applications has increased. Why are more people going for rheum?
