I know this is quite early but most American Students have finished giving the test for this year.
I am an IMG and have been prepping for the steps since quite some time and have seen Phloston, Transposony's and others' threads for their respective years and how helpful they have been.

I intend on giving step in Jan.. let's share timetables, plans and other stuff on how everyone intends on taking on this beast.

P.S. : I think it is not that early.. the 2015/2016 threads were started in September/October.. but in true SDN gunner style..i wanna start it in August.. 🙂

UWorld over-approximates by 15-20 points. Based on your scores you should be able to score between 225-235. You never know though, some people have scored over 250s with your scores. It all comes down to luck of draw on test day (i.e. if you have questions that you know well or topics that you are more comfortable with). Just keep working hard and go over material you are not comfortable with and you should be fine. Good luck next week!
* UWSA 1 overestimates.

Did you feel all points in FA are sufficient from anatomy point of view (not including Uworld)?

No, FA and Uworld aren't enough for anatomy because there's just so much that could be asked. It was my weaker section on practice tests and on the real thing. I'd say like 50-75% of what you need to know is in FA and Uworld, but you're always going to get oddball questions.

So far this year in the USA, both uworld tests have over predicted for everyone I know.
I did an analysis on the UWSA2 scores vs actual step 1 score posted on here after the big June 28th release date. The average difference was 0.5 points lower on the real deal than on UWSA2. Correlation coefficient of 0.642 which is strong. Only 37 data points which isn't great but not horrible either.

Hello, guys. I’m IMG, passed my Step 1 exam. My score is not impressive, but anyway, SDN helped me a lot, thanks everyone for sharing their experience, I feel that I should do the same.

UWSA1 – 188
NBME 11(offline) – 224
NBME 17(online) – 196
NBME 18 (offline) – 190 (68% correct)
NBME 16 (offline) – 216 (77% correct)
NBME 19 (offline) – 211 (75% correct)
UWSA2 – 215
Free questions - ~75% correct

Real deal – 207
I’m happy that I passed and to my score! During preparation I used UFAP strategy:

UWorld(67%average)- very good qbank, perfect tool to study questions, a lot of information, questions here much harder than on real exam, and its good for preparation. Qusetions on real exam was different, more like NBME, than Uworld.
FirstAid – I loved it, good book to retain all information for Step 1. I made notes from UWorld on every page. It helped with memorization all the stuff, absolutely must have for Step1.
Pathoma- beautiful lectures from Dr.Sattar. Covers almost all pathology in simple, logic and pure way. That’s all you need for pathology, must watch.
Also I watched Kaplan VideoLectures, some youtube channels, quizlet, Rx qbank(75% average), HY Neuroanatomy.

Exam day was stressful, it was last week of April, so new questions was added. Some questions like I was on the Mars, some easy questions from NBME. During exam I had diarrhea twice, problems with timing was obvious. Anyway, I performed. Thanks everyone for you help. Feel free to ask me anything, I’m open to questions.

Thanks for your input! Interesting correlation study you did. I hope it stays true!

So is the consensus that here that those who took the exam from 6/19 - 6/24 will receive scores this week as well even with the 4th Holiday?

I took my exam June 22nd, so it technically wouldn't even be 3 weeks, hence why I'm thinking it'll be the following week.

Another friend of mine who took it the same week said that she called and was told to add another week to the wait in lieu of the 4th..
I really hope that's not true. I took it on June 26th and I was really hoping that I would get the score by at least July 19th.

Hi there! Insert giving-back-to-the-community comment here. But seriously, reading the success stories of others truly helped me achieve my goal, and I want to give back now.

Step 1 Score: 250

I will preface this with the following:

1. I attend a mid-tier medical school

2. I attended a very low-tier undergraduate institution, which did scare me when I started medical school because most of my colleagues are from great colleges.

3. My MCAT score was a 32, below average for my medical school entering class.

My Strategy

Goals

Identifying goals is really important so you know what you’re after. This should be done relatively early on, perhaps by the middle to end of MS1.

1. I was thinking about pursuing ophthalmology by the end of MS1, so my target goal score was 240+. Other specialties are still on the table for me, but this is the one that required a high score.

2. I have a girlfriend, so after 3PM on every Saturday I wanted to spend with her. We don’t see each other any other day given our schedules, so this was pre-determined blocked off time once MS2 started, and yes, even during dedicated.

3. I run a nonprofit in my spare time, so I wanted to prioritize that along with coursework and Step studying.

Summer after MS1

I spent about two weeks, couple hours a day, reading the renal and cardio sections of First Aid (just the anatomy and physiology sections), because I was weak on those. That’s it, nothing else. Enjoy the summer! (I did research abroad and chilled when I got back).

MS2

This is where plans may vary based on your school schedule/requirements. It took me about 1.5-2 months to come up with the plan below, since I was figuring out what resources worked best for me. My school doesn’t require attendance for most lectures, so I never showed up unless I had to (perhaps 2-3 lectures/week on average). No, I didn’t care to Honor courses because step 1 is 1000x more important. I only honored 3/7 courses MS2 as a result. The example below is for a day when I didn’t have class:

· 5:30-6AM: Wake up/shower/eat/contemplate life

· 6-8AM: Watch relevant Pathoma for today’s lecture content (I searched for the relevant cards in the Bro’s deck and transferred them into my active deck for the unit (so for instance, if I was learning about brain tumors that day I would search for all the cards associated with them in the bros deck and transfer them to my active Neurology deck; by the end of the unit, all the Bros cards should be in your active deck))

· 8:15-10AM: Watch podcasted lectures 2x speed, adding only salient information to my anki deck

· 10-12: Read First Aid for the relevant material (Since I used Bros, I usually didn’t need to add any new cards to the deck)

· 12-1: Lunch (Sometimes I’d drive over to the library for a change of atmosphere, sometimes I would already be there at 8AM.)

· 1-4: Bunch of Anki cards; 3 hours sounds like a lot but the cards really start to accumulate after a while when you’re in a unit (Also did Sketchy a lot)

· 4-5:00 Stuff for nonprofit, research, etc

· 5:00-5:30: Dinner

· 5:30-8: Review yesterday’s Uworld block (I didn’t’ like to review a block right after doing it, I liked reviewing it the next day). What I mean by review is add anki cards to my active deck for the unit from Uworld; took a hell of a long time, but while everyone else was only able to do 1-2 passes of Uworld, I did 4-5 passes for most of the material through anki. This set me apart from most people.

· 8-9: New Uworld block, usually 32 questions (75% of a full block). Usually timed and unit-specific, but as questions from previous units accumulated I added multiple previous blocks at once.

Fridays? Off after 6PM. Weekends? Much of the same as above, except Saturday at 3PM I was done regardless of how I felt so I could hang out with SO.

IMPORTANT POINTS:

1. Firstly, yes this is intense. But, again, I wanted to ensure a high score and really tone down the stress I’d have during dedicated.

2. Secondly, IT IS VERY IMPORTANT, that you spend time reviewing the anatomy and physiology sections of First Aid during the unit you are on. I usually spent about 2 days going through those sections at the beginning of a new unit, using the USMLERx videos and Bros deck. This is what separated me from everyone else. I was thus theoretically behind everyone else in class lectures, but it doesn’t matter since you are ahead for what matters.

3. Thirdly, don’t make your own anki cards for First Aid/Pathoma. I got misdirected by an upperclassman (who I later found was trying to make others look bad on rotations to make himself look good/honor) to make my own cards, and I stopped in January of MS2 and just did Bros. Looking back, I wish I had done Bros from the beginning; would have saved so much more time.

Dedicated (6 weeks, 3 days)

By the time dedicated rolled around, I had gone through everything in so much detail that I felt ready. The only things I hadn’t gone through were biochemistry and micro. I’d finished 70% of Uworld by the time dedicated started (about 71-72% average), with biochem and micro making up the majority of questions I hadn’t done yet. I reset the deck so that I could have a good mixture of questions. I cannot stress enough the importance of doing Uworld during MS2, I’d say this was the major reason I got the score I did.

I picked ONE classmate to study with, who has become a very close friend of mine. Too many people spoil the cooking. We followed an identical schedule every day; he had only done 10-20% of Uworld and did not read most of First Aid by the time dedicated rolled around, but it still worked out for him (he got mid 240s). Clearly, there are many ways to approach MS2 but I definitely felt less stressed during dedicated because of my strategy.

Typical study plan:

· 5:30-7AM: Anki (I usually did maybe like 20-30 cards from two different body systems; remember I already had pristine anki decks with Bros + Uworld combined for each body system)

· 7-8: Shower/eat/contemplate life/get to library to meet up with study partner

· 8-10: Two blocks Uworld, timed random

· 10:15-12: Review Uworld

· 12-1: Sketchy Micro/Pharm (I planned it out so that if I spent an hour a day I’d easily finish all of sketchy by my test)

· 3-8: Review one body system

· 8-9: Biochem (Bros is great for this)

· 9-10:30: Get home, relax, maybe a little anki

The basic strategy was to ensure that I went through each body system twice, at least. I spent about 1-2 days per body system and then moved on to another. I was fluid about it. If I needed to spend more time on cardio because I sucked on it for Uworld/NBMEs, I did that. Don’t be so rigid about the schedule in terms of new content you are trying to learn; you’ll find that your strengths and weaknesses change. Focus on the weaknesses without forgetting the strengths (anki is great for this).

Took one practice test at the start of dedicated, then one every Saturday. Saturday 8-whenever was the test, and then I was off the rest of the day and hung out with my girlfriend. Sunday I reviewed the test all day with my study partner and made a plan for the week in terms of what body systems I wanted to cover and specific topics within those.

Day 1 dedicated: UWSA1 = 245. I knew this overpredicted, but I was still happy.

End of Week 1: UWSA2 =239.

End of Week 2: NBME 13 = 230

End of Week 3: NBME 15 = 236

End of Week 4: NBME 16 = 236

End of Week 5: NBME 17 = 252 (felt like I, by luck, knew most of the material in this test)

End of Week 6: NBME 18 = 242.

Free 120 (3 days before): 86%

Day Before Test

Just reviewed high yield stuff like lymph drainage by 3pm. My girlfriend got me a massage package so I went to that and got a nice dinner after.

Test Day

I kept a routine for each practice test that I maintained for the real test. Peanut butter sandwich, apple, two granola bars, water, and coffee. Ear plugs with headphones over them.

The actual test felt okay, my feeling was that I was going to perform between NBME 17 and 18. The test was very similar to NBME 18, but my feeling immediately after was more like NBME 17. I marked about 50% of the questions (I am a liberal marker and I wasn’t worried about that, since I did the same for all my practice tests), and I didn’t have time on any block (except like 1 for 2 minutes) to review them (again, typical for me).

Breaks: I am a huge believer in deep breathing and staying calm, and it’s the reason I did well on test day:

After block 1: 5 minute deep breathing at desk

After block 2: Get up and eat a granola bar

After block 3: 5 minute deep breathing

After block 4: Lunch

After block 5: 5 minute deep breathing

After block 6: Went outside and walked around, I had a good amount of break left

I hope that this has helped some of you all figure out what your plans are for Step 1. It’s quite the journey, but my strategy worked well for me and, at least for the dedicated portion, my study partner as well. I never thought I’d score high enough to pursue my dreams, but now anything is possible!
I think its great youre contributing to the thread and you obviously took your time to help others, so thanks for that.
I have to say that your schedule during ms2 was insane and i dont think i would even recommend it for the most ambitious student. I also went thru the entire first aid chapter during each module (my school is subject based so we did path all of 2nd year) as well as rx, kaplan and uworld for most modules (couldnt get to all of rx and kaplan for some modules bc of time) but my schedule didnt look like yours. Kudos to you for not burning out but i think that schedule is just absurd. Not trying to be mean

I hear you, and I think I made that clear in the write-up! To each their own, as long as you get the score you want that's what matters right? 🙂

like competitive for programs in NYC / the NE (not necessarily top top programs) even if I go to a state school?
While i don't know specifics, I'd think that your above avg step 1 is good enough that it wouldn't hold you back. It would likely depend on other things such as clinical grades, LORs etc. that would complete your application. The IM forum is probably the best place to inquire about the competitiveness of specific programs/regions.

I really hope that's not true. I took it on June 26th and I was really hoping that I would get the score by at least July 19th.
The exact date doesn't matter, it's the week that counts. as of last year trend U hope everyone taking upto the week of July 19th expect score the coming Wednesday. I took 22nd June and am expecting this Wednesday. a friend of mine took it on Thursday and he got his score back on the 20th day/2nd Wednesday/.

These are not mutually exclusive.
The purpose of my post was to show others that they are not.

FWIW, I took UWSA1 2 months out and got a 264. Took cbse the next day and got 250. So clearly that one overestimated for me despite UWSA2 underestimating.

Just curious, what makes you expect your score this week? I was under the impression that those who took test the week of 6/19-6/23 would be getting scores on 7/19. I hope you are right though!

A friend of mine took it on April, and got it within the 3rd week of his exam week,so starting from today it's our third

For those who took the exam 6/19- has anyone's permit disappeared yet for those whose registration period has not expired?

Since January of this year when I started my studying for STEP 1 I've been checking out this thread. Admittedly, the frequency increased the closer and closer I got to my test date on June 8th, 2017. As some background, I am a DO student whose school gives just about a month of dedicated time based on the date I took the exam (reason why I started in January). Like many others, my NBMEs were ok, but not as great as I wanted them to be. At first, this really took a shot at my confidence level. To my luck though, I started reading this thread more and saw the success stories of so many students who were able to out perform the NBMEs and kill their STEP 1s. To all those that posted stories like this, I thank you!! These stories are what gave me the confidence and hope that I can do the same. So, I'm posting this so that one day a fellow student physician can look at this and be given that same confidence and hope that the previous stories brought me. Below are my dates and scores. If you have any questions, need of advice or just need someone to talk to, please, don't hesitate to reach out. I'll do my best to help others just as this thread helped me. Just throwing this out there, the only resources I used were First Aid, UWorld, Pathoma and Sketchy Micro.

5/7 NBME 13- 217
5/14 NBME 15- 232
5/19 UWSA 2- 237
5/23 NBME 16- 234
5/28 NBME 17- 234
6/2 NBME 19- 217
6/5 NBME 18- 226

6/8 Real Deal- 242

Long time lurker here as well and my story is almost identical to the one above! I wanted to add on to the above post in that anything is possible! I also struggled with my NBME's, got my confidence shot down on many occasions, but stuck with my system and it ended up paying off! Resources used: FA, UW, Pathoma, Sketchy micro/pharm

UWSA1: 241 (5 weeks out)
NBME: 232 (4 weeks out)
NBME: 221 (3 weeks out)
NBME: 230 (2 weeks out)
NBME: 242 (1 week out)
Free 120: 92%, UWSA2: 248 (both a few days before)
Real deal: >250

Something I can't stress enough: take care of yourself! Personally I overdid it with the studying over the first few weeks (upwards of 14 hours a day with minimal to no breaks) and the burnout revealed itself in my scores. Exercise, eat well, sleep well, and be around people that keep you grounded and happy. The more relaxed and confident you feel on test day, the fewer dumb mistakes/answer changes you'll make. Trust your gut!

So based on what everyone is saying, it looks like this year they are delaying all of the scores by a week due to 4th of July instead of doubling up this week.

Hey guys, so I took NBME 19 to get a new baseline (I'm 3 weeks out) I got a 72% which equates to a 186... Can someone advise me how to proceed here? I'm looking for a 235 or more. I'm in rotations right now and I can't really spend a copious amount of time reviewing so I'm parsing my time between RX for FA review and UW for true assessment. Basically, I'll do like 3 blocks in the morning of UW and review, then I'll do the questions pertaining to those topics that were the poorest in performance from RX. Anyone have any additional feedback you can give? Thanks guys.

Hello, guys. I’m IMG, passed my Step 1 exam. My score is not impressive, but anyway, SDN helped me a lot, thanks everyone for sharing their experience, I feel that I should do the same.

UWSA1 – 188
NBME 11(offline) – 224
NBME 17(online) – 196
NBME 18 (offline) – 190 (68% correct)
NBME 16 (offline) – 216 (77% correct)
NBME 19 (offline) – 211 (75% correct)
UWSA2 – 215
Free questions - ~75% correct

Real deal – 207

Hey, congrats on passing! Is there a particular reason you decided to do the offline versions of your exam? I obtained a similar percentage correct on NBME 19 and my score was actually a 186. I think the scoring formula you used was a bit off (which is fairly typical, tbh). Also, did you get through UW 2x?

The easiest thing to do is see if there was a particular topic/s on nbme 19 that you did bad on, study that/those for a few days. Then take a different nbme. Nbme 19 has a very harsh curve so instead of focusing only on the score off of that one, see what your score is on a different nbme. If your other one is low as well, you might need to try to find a way to "learn" the topics instead of doing questions on them. Like instead of doing RX, you would replace it with physeo or boards and beyond. But, those are videos and I understand time is probably an issue.

I'm not trying to be a negative Nancy, as it's clear from my post history that my practice exam scores aren't the best. But I was able to bring them up a bit. I hit a 207 on 19 yesterday and I missed a few easy questions, so I could of done a smidge better. I think I'm taking step (now) on the 19th, so all I can suggest from my end is to keep studying and reviewing things and taking nbmes to see where some knowledge gaps might be.

I kind of recommend against using RX, as it's literally just a "first order did you memorize this line from FA" qbank. I already did uworld some time back and if I did it again, I wouldn't learn from my mistakes, I would just go straight to the right answer. I am doing kaplan qbank and I'm liking it, I won't get through all of it, so it'll be for my worst subjects.

Thanks for the reply!

But I was able to bring them up a bit. I hit a 207 on 19 yesterday

So, what was a 207 in terms of percent correct?

I kind of recommend against using RX, as it's literally just a "first order did you memorize this line from FA" qbank

The thing is, its actually changed! The bank use to be that way, but for the most part, they have adapted a bit of their questions to eliminate some buzz words and other things that may give away the answers. Also, its to my liking that it regurgs first aid, since I'm just so far past reading FA right now. I have a shelf exam a week after my Step 1. FML.

Idk when your step 1 is, but it looks like you'll need more time d/t your rotations are in the way of studying.

Step is at the end of this month, but I've been studying for a while now. I only got like 56 wrong on this damn thing... How come it projects me at failing tho? If I got like 10 more questions right, I'd probably be at a 210/215.

NBME 19 is notorious for having a tough curve and most people would argue that it is 1) not a good NBME to take to see where you're at, and therefore not a great overall predictor of your score and 2) it causes more anxiety than anything when looking at score trends... especially when taken the week before the real deal. From what I've read, it seems that people who take the average of their practice exam scores actually end up scoring very close to that score. So if your practice exam scores are around 235 (excluding NBME 19), I wouldn't lose any sleep over your performance on NBME 19.

What score should you expect on the real thing if you get 10-15 wrong every block? Just an estimate is required. Thank you

So based on what everyone is saying, it looks like this year they are delaying all of the scores by a week due to 4th of July instead of doubling up this week.
Yeah it looks like that.for people out of range of eligibility period, the extend eligibility button is still active and those within the eligibility period the permit link is still there.Last year everyone who sat the week of June 19th got their score on July 13,I thought they would do the same for us, we'll see how it goes anyway

What score should you expect on the real thing if you get 10-15 wrong every block? Just an estimate is required. Thank you
There is no answer to this question. Everyone gets a different test and it is (supposedly) scaled to the cohort that you take the test with. Since everyone has a different test, scoring the same in terms of number incorrect as someone else could yield a vastly different result. Study hard, be confident, trust your gut, and relax. You'll be fine.

I just got an email form my dean and the NBME told him that tomorrow they will release all scores up to and including June 17th.

NBME rep told me that week of June 19th scores could be released tomorrow or next Wed, so it seems there may be conflicting information about the July 4th push back.
