Official 2018-2019 Cardiology Fellowship Application Cycle

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
Today got an emal from South illinois univ "you have the qualification , have kept you on hold, will soon be decided" - did anybody else get similar email. I saw some already got invites and today some got "acknowledgement". Is this a wait list or a pre rejection siren ?

So now that invitations have slowed, maybe we can have a tally of # interviews.

I have 5. Reapplicant. Last year at this point I had 1. Applied to 110 programs.

I have 5. Reapplicant. Last year at this point I had 1. Applied to 110 programs.

I guess I will win the status check from the bottom
Applied to 122, got 2 invites. 16 rejections. Rest have chosen to ignore. 🙂

Anyone interested in switching interview dates:
- Tufts Medical Center or SUNY downstate- September 18th . Please PM me if interested.

Can anyone shed light on recent fellowship experience between Houston programs: Baylor vs. Texas Heart vs. UT Houston? So much changes in these programs in recent times, no clue how to think about one over another. Thanks in advance.

Interview and see what you think for yourself. There's a handful of reviews of these programs if you do a search.

do research in a large program that could accept you next year. Doing research in a reach program like Ivy league may not take you next year. Get to do research in a smaller profile but large capacity program, example- Jackson Memorial miami has 7 seats, texas programs have many seats. and get to know the PD, staff, and fellows. I dont know if your letters of rec could have bad feedback too. never know. but I think cardiology is attainable

That’s unfortunate. Sounds like you have an impressive CV otherwise as well as good scorers. Would have expected atleast 1-2 interviews with that amount of pubs/abstracts.

Truth be told, I think your application isnt making it past the filters. Cardiology is so competitive that in order to narrow down 500 apps to maybe 100, they have to apply strict filters and with the # of very strong applicants out there, they can’t afford to take a chance on someone with a red flag. Your best bet at this point would be to create as many contacts as you can. Someone needs to make that phone call for you or chances are your application won’t even be looked at.

I have similar background. Similar step scores. 17 years post Med School. Good thing is we have cards fellowship in house. 4 IVs so far, one from home program, one from the university where I worked for 7 years in research. One of my LoR is from a well-known cardiologist, probably that is why I got the other 2 IVs. Hope it could help.

It’s probably even stricter than that unfortunately. Usually narrows 500-600 apps down closer to 60.

I think the CS failure is basically the poison pill here. Only by having someone advocate will he be able to get an invite somewhere. We have similar research fellows at our institution (IMG, community program, lots of pubs) who unfortunately do not usually get interviews at our institution because of visa issues, residency pedigree etc

Cardiology is just very competitive. But hopefully there’s a chance if someone can advocate very strongly for you

So do you think I should remain in my current post until I get a cardiology fellowship or continue as hospitalist and do research on the side? I’m just also worried about being too far out from clinical touch which might then become another issue in the application.

I think you should show your application to whoever you work with and have a long, honest conversation with them about your chances. Email some of the PDs of programs you applied to or call their coordinators.

Ultimately, you have to balance the risk of further potential failure to match. Being a hospitalist is not a bad gig either and at some point it might be worth it to start making money

I was hoping to get some advice on this thread as it's my first time on it. I feel very discouraged at this point as I have applied to every hospital in the country and have not even had ONE interview in the past 2 fellowship cycles. If some experts could give me some advice as to what they recommend I should do next or just give up my Cardiology dreams, I would love honest feedback. The only downside in my CV is that I have one CS attempt and apparently this has been the hesitation in giving me interviews.
-IMG graduate
-No Visa required
-Residency from small community hospital
-Step 1: 240
-Step 2 CK: 240
-Step 3 CK: 218
-20 publications
-10 abstracts
-After residency I did a one year research fellowship in large university hospital in mid-west
-After the one year research fellowship and still not matching, I am currently enrolled in another Cardiology Research/Clinical one year fellowship program in Ivy League and still no interviews.

Don't know what to do at this point as I have been out of residency for 2 years now and still continuing to stay in the Cardiology field at some point so I can still be a competitive applicant but have not gotten any interviews in the past 2 cycles and applied to every hospital in the country. Because of the CS first attempt fail, will I never get into a cardiology fellowship?

I see a decreasing trend in your step scores compared to the average of each step exam. You are a reapplicant and have a CS attempt but those shouldn’t hinder your chances significantly. There is something that appears to be more of an issue with your application. Either with your PS or your LORs. You really need strong letters and a solid PS. Personally, if I didn’t match I would seek an academic medicine position.

US MD > US DO > IMG/FMGs. We have to live with the fact that we are third class applicants. That’s just how it is.

Historically THI > Baylor > UT Houston. Everyone and their mother wants to go to THI. Don’t know how it is these days.

Historically THI > Baylor > UT Houston. Everyone and their mother wants to go to THI. Don’t know how it is these days.

There was a lot of changes in these programs recently especially with the move of heart failure group to UT Houston from THI few year ago and a lot of improvement made at UT Houston transforming it into a premier league cardiology fellowship that is now competing with top tier programs,Personally I will rank them as

UT Houston > Baylor > THI

There was a lot of changes in these programs recently especially with the move of heart failure group to UT Houston from THI few year ago and a lot of improvement made at UT Houston transforming it into a premier league cardiology fellowship that is now competing with top tier programs,Personally I will rank them as

UT Houston > Baylor > THI

Any suggestions on how to write email to program requesting to review application? should we contact PD or cordinator?

I don’t think programs like nagging emails. Just my thoughts.

Historically THI > Baylor > UT Houston. Everyone and their mother wants to go to THI. Don’t know how it is these days.

From what I gather it's still the same.

IMO, the response by the APD and supposed fellows seemed a bit weird. I'm familiar with houston programs indirectly (based on interviewing, talking with fellows/residents), but as an outsider the things the OP brought up, the response by those supporting the program as well as conversations I've had with those connected to the program, all give me pause.

I guess interviews have pretty much finished going out by now? Anybody know if we should expect to get anymore interviews going forward?

Anyone have any insight into whats going on at OHSU, read some news articles saying the heart failure/transplant team all left and the department is getting sued?

From what I have heard, interviews keep trickling through end of September. Major part of season might be done? Any more comments?

Newark Beth Israel has never send out invites, as far as I know. They had that one acknowledgment email weeks ago and then silence. I bet we hear from them this week, provided they haven't already done so without me knowing.

Edit: anyone hear from Mercy St. Vincent's in Toledo?

I am also familiar with the houston program .I guess it looks like there is a lot of negativity coming from the OP for him/her to initiate such a post .
The replies to OP by the fellows and especially the APD actually shows that the program is really receptive to feedback and amenable to making changes to address their fellows’ concerns and suggestion

Any thoughts on program at Utah?

Actually liked this program, thought it might be clinically stronger than some bigger name programs out there. PD seemed nice, great city for outdoors, more IMGs, possibly weaker on patient diversity but no big deal. Utah is one of the OG's in HF/LVADs.

No direct knowledge, but if I had to guess it probably won't impact you much as a fellow (unless things snowball into other depts which I doubt). HF is usually just one month during fellowship, not sure how they'll handle it but plenty of programs out there don't do tx/lvads so it's not that unusual. As far as that particular pathology affecting others aspects of training, it depends how they handle it, but there's 10months until you'd start fellowship so there's time for them to sort it out. If you're interviewing there ask them, but I wouldn't let it deter you too much.

Did anyone get interview invitation from Florida Atlantic University asking for a preferred date, without their own list; and later never heard back ?
Thanks

Any idea about the mount Sinai Brooklyn- they say that the fellows spend half the time in the main Sinai. What do you guys think of that ?

I haven’t heard anything from St. Vincent either but I think they already sent out invites.
